Pthumeru

The underground labyrinth is extremely large, and changes its form the deeper it goes. Each part has its own unique appearance and tendencies, though, and these are divided into four distinct areas: Pthumeru, Hintertomb, Loran and Isz.

Pthumeru specifics

  • The standard area type, usually with a basic room structure.
  • No particular elemental type dominates.
  • Kidnappers appear often.
  • Merciless Watchers guard floor levers.

General Notes

  • You can tackle this labyrinth straight after completing the first Pthumerian Labyrinth, but it's recommended to level up your character to around 40 and your main weapon to +4 or +5 to make things easier. If you explored the Pthumerian Labyrinth thoroughly, you should have the six Ritual Blood (2) that are required to craft this Chalice Dungeon at the Ritual Altar. The Hintertomb Chalice can be found in a Coffin on the second level of this labyrinth.
  • Old Hunter Allies: With patch v1.07 a wide variety of new and existing NPCs have been added to the main game, the Old Hunters areas and the Chalice Dungeons to aid you during the hunt, particularly during boss fights. The conditions for summoning these allies vary; the “Old Hunter Bell” is a universal requirement for calling any of them. In some areas you may be able to summon up to two NPC Hunters. In Central Pthumerian Labyrinth you can summon Tomb Prospector Olek on Layer 3 for Pthumerian Descendant boss, his sign is to the right of the exit gate to the boss room on this floor in a large, dark room. The summon point is in the far right-hand corner from where you enter.

  • Step 01:
The coffin leaning against the wall just to the left of the entrance to this room has a Labyrinth Watcher hiding inside. Attack it as soon as you're in range to foil its ambush attempt.
  • Step 02:
There's a Bell Ringer on the ledge in the middle of this room, but before running in there to kill her, wait near the entrance and let the enemies she spawned come towards you, so that you can kill them. There are more Labyrinth Watchers on the upper part of this room and they'll start throwing Molotov Cocktails down at you once you're in range. Taking out the initial group of enemies will mean you'll have as few obstacles as possible between you and the Bell Ringer when you go after her.

  • Step 03:
Numerous Labyrinth Watchers lay dormant in this corridor. It's best to take them out one at a time as you come to them, in order to avoid being attacked form behind later on.

  • Step 04:
The Labyrinth Watchers standing guard over the chest at the top of the stairs in this room all throw Molotov Cocktails, so instead of trying to enter from the bottom of the stairs while avoiding their attacks, it's better to approach from the top later.

  • Step 05:
Before attempting to go after the Watcher Chieftain that's guarding the lever in this room, it's best to first take out the other enemies, so that you can fight it one-on-one. The first of the Labyrinth Watchers will generally be quite close to the entrance, so try to take it out first, and then move up and take out the two dogs while the second Labyrinth Watcher stands up near the wall on the left Once everything else has been killed, move up and keep the tree in the area between you and the Watcher Chieftain, so that you can safely bait it into attacking and kill it while it's recovering.

  • Step 01:
The Gravekeeper Scorpions in this room have attacks that inflict a large amount of Rapid Poison buildup, so you should always try to fight them one at a time, and don't hesitate to retreat if the buildup starts to get too high.

  • Step 02:
There are a large number of oil urns covering half of the middle section of this room. On the floor above, A Labyrinth Watcher likes to throw Molotov Cocktails down at you once you're in its sights. The safest thing to do here is to either shoot some of the urns yourself to blow them up and get rid of the threat, or stick to the other side of the room, where there are no urns.

  • Step 03:
Be extremely careful as you enter this tunnel, because there's a Gel on the ceiling hidden amongst the vines hanging down, and it will drop straight onto you with a grab attack if you try to walk beneath it. Train your camera up to the vines and try to locate the Gel before entering the tunnel - use a ranged attack to knock it down Gels often inhabit places such as this, so any time you're about to enter one, always check the ceiling first.
  • Step 04:
There are some very important Ritual Blood (3) items to be found in the chest in this room. Before you try to get them, it's worth going around the room and killing all of the dormant Labyrinth Watchers, so that they don't ambush you.

  • Step 05:
The large central drawbridge in this room can be activated by operating the device at the top of the series of ladders just to the right when you enter. Lowering it will give you a path back to the upper part of the circular room near the start of the Level.

  • Step 06:
The Hintertomb Chalice can be found inside a coffin in this room, but to reach it you'll need to fight your way past a large amount of enemies. As soon as you open the door, Labyrinth Watchers, Labyrinth Rats and Rabid Dogs will start approaching, so stick near the doorway and try to fight them as they funnel through it. If you see a decently-sized group forming, you may want to use a Molotov Cocktail to severely weaken them. The Watcher Chieftain near the loot coffin will also move towards the door when you open it - try to kill as many of the other enemies as you can before he gets close. If there are quite a few enemies still around when you see him, drop back down to the area below to create some more space and take out the enemies as they try to follow you.

  • Step 07:
There are two Labyrinth Ritekeepers near the top of the ladder in this room, along with a Kidnapper that patrols between them. Trying to fight the Kidnapper while evading the slow-moving projectiles from the Ritekeepers can be very difficult. It's best to kill the Ritekeeper closest to the top of the ladder straight away, and then wait for the Kidnapper to spot you and drop back down, so that he follows. Kill the Kidnapper as soon as he drops down, and then climb back up and finish off the other Ritekeeper.

  • Step 08:
The Keeper of the Old Lords uses a lot of fire-based attacks, so it can be very beneficial to equip Attire with high fire defense before facing him. You can also make use of the pillars in the room to help shield you from his attacks. Upon defeating him you'll automatically receive the Central Pthumeru Root Chalice, which will allow you to create randomly generated Central Pthumerian Dungeons.

  • Step 01:
The Labyrinth Watcher with the lantern that patrols the middle of this room will shake its lantern and awaken all of the other enemies in the room if it spots you Try and hide to the side of the doorway until it has its back to you, and then quickly run up and kill it.
  • Step 02:
A Watcher Chieftain is standing guard near a chest in the middle of this room, but if you walk slowly around to the left as soon as you enter you can get behind him for an easy charged R2.

  • Step 03:
Come to a stop when you reach the fork in this corridor, because giant boulders are being periodically dropped from a hole in the ceiling along the path to the left, after which they'll roll down the length of the corridor to a hole in the floor at the opposite end. It's advised that you follow the path around to the right first, because the room it leads to is a dead end. Wait for a boulder to roll past, and then follow it down to the room. When you come back from that room, wait for a boulder to drop in the hole, and then quickly run up to the entrance to the corridor and wait there until another boulder passes before continuing.

  • Step 04:
Another lucrative room in terms of Holy Chalice rite materials can be found beyond the door on the bottom part of this room, so make sure you clear it out before going up the ladder.

  • Step 05:
The Labyrinth Watchers that have been spawned by the Bell Ringer in this room will often detect you before you can enter, so try to kill them as they funnel through the doorway Once the initial group has been killed, quickly run straight ahead and kill the patrolling Bell Ringer. A Merciless Watcher with a gun is standing guard near the lever in this room, so after going down the stairs towards it, use the pillars for cover, and once it's close enough, kill it when it begins reloading.

  • Step 06:
The Pthumerian Descendant is extremely aggressive and agile, and its attacks can be very difficult to interrupt. It's safest to use a series of quicksteps to try and evade its combos, and then get a couple of hits in during the recovery. For defeating it you will automatically receive the Lower Pthumeru Chalice, which will allow you explore even deeper parts of the Pthumeru Labyrinth.
