Strong Enemy & Boss

Description

    A large ancient ruin lies beneath the Ancient City of Yharnam. It is said that within those ruins, the graves and rest places of those that are not human are laid, and there are wandering hunters who can be found protecting those silent ruins. Born and bred in those damp ruins they live on the flesh and blood of the dead. Pale skin that has not seen the light of day and pupils that have reverted to a black color. Despite their sunken, pitch-black eyes, be sure they will find you. (Pre-release official description)

Overview

  • As slow as are they powerful, these brutes use purely melee attacks. They use a variety of combos, almost all with a slow build-up, making them easy to interrupt. If you stand a short distance away from them, they'll often use their Running Overhead Slam, which is one of their faster moves. It can be avoided by quickstepping to the side just as they begin running. While their club attacks are slow, swings from their lanterns are not, and they can hit you almost instantly during their Club & Lamp Combo so be careful if you're standing within the lantern's range. They'll tend finish the combo regardless of the distance you stand from them, so you may need to use a couple of quicksteps to evade the whole thing.
  • Chieftains with heated clubs share all of the same attacks as the other variant, but have a few extra moves in their repertoire. Although they may look threatening, they'll inflict far less damage compared to other Watchers, even with the added fire effect on their club. From the edge of their reach they will most commonly use their Double Jab, and after each jab they will momentarily hold their club outward to bait you into walking into its scorching base. This is your best chance to interrupt them for a visceral attack since this attack can be interrupted the entire time the club is held out.
  • Their overhead combo is almost identical to the other variant's three-hit overhead combo, but instead ends with a single jab, which is also briefly held out outwards. When standing close to or against them, they'll use their Lantern Smack; although this will inflict minimal damage, it may open you to being hit by a follow-up attack, so it's best to avoid standing too close to them. Like the other club-wielding variant, when behind them they will occasionally use a Backside Swing, which you can quickstep backwards to avoid, once you see them raise their to ready the attack.

Strategy

  • Use a fire weapon, or apply some Fire Paper and aim to stay just outside their reach, so that they'll use one of their combos. Once they do, you can either try to interrupt one of the attacks, or wait for it to miss and begin an attack of your own as they recover. Against most of their attacks, such as the Two-hand Overhead Smash, you can also quickstep towards them to pass through the attack, leaving the Watcher open long enough for a quickly-charged attack from behind. This also takes the range of their attacks out of the equation; the Two-hand Overhead Smash has deceptively long range, and can easily hit you even after a backdash. As long as you are sure the attack they use isn't a combo-starter it's safe to quickstep through their attacks to position yourself at their back, and then land one or two quick attacks before moving away again to avoid their Backside Swing. Their slow movement speed also makes them quite susceptible to ranged attacks and you can use them to whittle down their health as they slowly close in on you.

Notes

  • Preset Chalice Dungeons: Pthumerian Labyrinth, Pthumerian Labyrinth (Boss), Central Pthumerian Labyrinth, Lower Pthumerian Labyrinth, Lower Pthumerian Labyrinth (Boss), Pthumeru Ihyll
  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • When additional rite Fetid Offering is applied to the Chalice Dungeon, Watchers will have their stats boosted and appear with a smoky red visual effect to signify their upgrade. They reward you with more Blood Echoes and it increases the amount of items that will drop from them.
  • Watcher Chieftain (Club & Lantern) can use recovery items to fully restore their health, so you'll need to keep the pressure on them.
  • Watcher Chieftain (Club & Lantern) is tied to the Bloodlickers spawn effect in Chalice Dungeons. Therefore after executing visceral attack and killing this enemy, then heading off to other parts of the layer, there's a possibility that when you return to the room you visceral attacked it in a Bloodlicker will appear to feed on the blood. Pungent Blood Cocktails don't attract this enemy, making the item ineffective.
Shaman Bone Blades affect this enemy, making it hostile to other enemies.

Ritual Materials: Drop Pools

  • For the most part, items dropped by enemies are decided simply by a random per cent chance from that enemy's own list of potential items. When an enemy appears in a dungeon, it sometimes has one or more of its drops determined by the dungeon's Depth, in order to give better rewards for more challenging dungeons. Such items are selected from a pool of similar items, and these pools are shown here. The upshot of this is that an enemy might drop a Tomb Mold (1) in the Depth 1 Pthumerian Root Labyrinth, but would drop a Tomb Mold (5) instead in a Depth 5 Isz Gravestone dungeon.
