Merciless Watcher (Mace) ❘ 残酷な守り人

Strong Enemy

Description

A large ancient ruin lies beneath the Ancient City of Yharnam. It is said that within those ruins, the graves and rest places of those that are not human are laid, and there are wandering hunters who can be found protecting those silent ruins. Born and bred in those damp ruins they live on the flesh and blood of the dead. Pale skin that has not seen the light of day and pupils that have reverted to a black color. Despite their sunken, pitch-black eyes, be sure they will find you. (Pre-release official description)

Overview

  • Merciless Watchers share much in common with Watcher Chieftains, but they do bring a few new tricks to the table that you're going to need to watch out for. The biggest departure from the Chieftains are the Watchers equipped with large two-handed maces, that have also decided to ditch their heavy grab to increase their agility and ensure none of their movements are restricted. These variants move around much more quickly than the others, and will roll continuously when engaged in combat, only leaving themselves vulnerable during the recovery periods after their swings. They can be interrupted and staggered, but doing so is extremely difficult owing to their swift attacks and constant rolling, so sticking to quick R1 strikes is generally the best option.
  • You'll also encounter a Watcher that comes armed with a scattergun that it will use to attack you from range, and will only switch to their clubs once you get close, or they get low on health. Their gunshots are predictable, due to the slow and consistent rate at which they're fired, and they are completely vulnerable as they reload after firing each shot so this is your best chance to close in and attack them. Saw-wielding watchers can use recovery items to fully restore their health, so you'll need to keep the pressure on them. Once you see them reach for their left side pocket, use transformation attacks to quickly break their super armor and prevent them from using the item.

Strategy

  • To inflict optimal damage in an extremely short period of time, hit them with short bursts of Flamesprayer or Rosmarinus fire as they roll or while they recover after attacking. Striking them with repeated melee swings is difficult due to their continuous rolling, but you'll have brief opportunities to use R1 combos after most of their attacks. When you're within reach of their melee attacks, they'll often perform a Rolling Overhead Swing or Front Flip Slam immediately after recovering from a roll. The Front Flip Slam has a longer recovery period and leaves them open to charged attacks from behind. At short range, they will use a slow Overhead Swing with strong tracking and up to two delayed follow-up strikes; the animation on this attack is heavily telegraphed so look to interrupt it. From slightly further out they tend to favor the Running Underhand Swing, which they can delay for up to a second to trick you into dodging too early, so it's much safer to try and interrupt it.

Notes

  • Preset Chalice Dungeons: Pthumerian Labyrinth, Cursed Pthumerian Defilement, Pthumeru Ihyll
  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • When additional rite Fetid Offering is applied to the Chalice Dungeon, Watchers will have their stats boosted and appear with a smoky red visual effect to signify their upgrade. They reward you with more Blood Echoes and it increases the amount of items that will drop from them.
  • Merciless Watcher (Mace) can use recovery items to fully restore their health, so you'll need to keep the pressure on them.
  • Merciless Watcher (Mace) is tied to the Bloodlickers spawn effect in Chalice Dungeons. Therefore after executing visceral attack and killing this enemy, then heading off to other parts of the layer, there's a possibility that when you return to the room you visceral attacked it in a Bloodlicker will appear to feed on the blood. More information about this effect can be found on the Traps & Hazards wiki page.

Merciless Watcher (Mace)
Pungent Blood Cocktails don't attract this enemy, making the item ineffective.
Shaman Bone Blades affect this enemy, making it hostile to other enemies.

Attack Patterns

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Back Slam Yes Quick startup but long recovery; quickstep away from their rolls and get behind for a charged attack.
Front Flip Slam Yes Usually used after close-range rolls; very fast with a long recovery. Quickstep away and circle behind for a charged attack during the recovery.
Overhead Swing Yes Easiest to interrupt; slow windup with good tracking followed by two more delayed overhead swings. Quickstep away and interrupt the follow-ups.
Running Overhead Swing Yes Delayed startup; quickstep behind it and attack during its recovery.
Rolling Overhead Swing Yes Quick vertical swing sometimes used after rolling; quickstep to either side and attack during its recovery.
Slow Sweeping Combo Yes Frontal 180-degree arc with short reach; quickstep backward to avoid.
Rapid Sweeping Combo Yes Quickstep backward to escape or forward to position yourself behind them; attack from behind while they continue the combo.
Running Underhand Swing Yes Drags club on ground and performs upward swing with strong tracking; quickstep left to avoid it.

Ritual Materials: Drop Pools

  • For the most part, items dropped by enemies are decided simply by a random per cent chance from that enemy's own list of potential items. When an enemy appears in a dungeon, it sometimes has one or more of its drops determined by the dungeon's Depth, in order to give better rewards for more challenging dungeons. Such items are selected from a pool of similar items, and these pools are shown here. The upshot of this is that an enemy might drop a Tomb Mold (1) in the Depth 1 Pthumerian Root Labyrinth, but would drop a Tomb Mold (5) instead in a Depth 5 Isz Gravestone dungeon.

Base Level: Blood Echoes, HP, Damage and Def. Multipliers

  • For enemies that also appear (or exclusively appear) in dungeons, their stats will be shown at the base level, because their exact stats at any given point are calculated from these base values. The basic formula is: Total Value = Base x A x B x C x D. Multipliers written down below were datamined directly from the game files. Multiplier A represents depth (1 - 5) of the chalice dungeon; multiplier B is layer (1 - 4) of the specific chalice dungeon; multiplier C is used when dungeon is Pthumeru Ihyll; multiplier D is for calculating blood echoes when additional curse rite is used.
