Bell Ringer ❘ 鐘を鳴らす女

Regular Enemy

Description

One of Yharnam’s sinister urban legends, this crazed woman dressed in black carries with her a special bell.
It is said that the sound of her bell brings out all sorts of unsavory creatures.
  • The description from the additional rite Sinister Bell when conducting Chalice rituals tells us that: "Summons the Sinister Resonant Bell. The bell-ringing woman appears to be a mad Pthumerian."

Overview

  • Although weak and largely defenseless on their own, Bell Ringers will continuously summon other enemies until you locate and defeat them. Enemies summoned by Bell Ringers can be identified by their red auras and will receive defense bonuses until the Bell Ringer is killed. You'll hear the bell's telltale ring even if the Bell Ringer is located far away (which they usually are). Although tracking down each and every Bell Ringer might seem like a frustrating game of hide-and-seek, killing them is worth the trouble if you're trying to explore an area.
  • Upon the Bell Ringer's death, all of the enemies under her control will grab their heads and stumble for several seconds; at this point they will lose their defense boosts and will no longer reappear when defeated. In dungeons, the Bell Ringer's death will instantly kill the enemies she has summoned.
  • When you do manage to hunt down a Bell Ringer and force her into battle, she'll offer little resistance with weak swings and slow combos using her dagger. You're likely to cut her down before you ever see her Dark Mist attack, but if she uses it as you approach, simply back off until the darkness fades and then move in for the kill. Bell Ringers have low defense and health and are vulnerable to interrupts and staggers, making them equally susceptible to nearly any form of attack.

Strategy

  • Finding each Bell Ringer's hiding spot is the hard part - with that accomplished, there's not much they can do to stop you from painting the cobblestones with their innards. While it's a good idea to stay behind them in order to avoid their dagger slashes and combo attacks, they have very low super armor and a frontal R1 chain will prevent them from ever hitting you as long as your opening attack lands first. Thrown weapons or consumable items are a waste; melee weapons will get the job done faster and much more efficiently.

Bell Ringers in Chalice Dungeons

  • Bell Ringers are among the greatest threats in Chalice Dungeons, because they continually summon more enemies you'll have to deal with. Locating them quickly is therefore very important, so get used to the places they tend to appear in. By far the most common places are on the ledge in the multi-level room with stairways on either side, and at the very top of the three-story circular room with the stone elevator platform in the middle.
  • Sinister Bell Additional Rite: With this rite activated, the one additional Bell Ringer appears in the dungeon, allowing for two players to invade at the same time. As long as they are alive, competing players can enter the same layer, with the goal of killing you in order to earn Insight. Sinister Bell is only possible in dungeons created from the 'Sinister' Chalice type, so it can't be combined with other Additional Rites. It is the best way to play extended sessions of PvP and gain Insight, but it doesn't come with any rewards, such as higher drop rates.

Variants

Basic variant found throughout Yharnam. Red Clothes variant supporting The One Reborn in Yahar'gul.

Notes

  • Preset Chalice Dungeons: Pthumerian Labyrinth, Central Pthumerian Labyrinth, Hintertomb, Lower Pthumerian Labyrinth, Lower Pthumerian Labyrinth, Ailing Loran, Lower Loran
  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • Video: Every Sinister Bell Lady Location : The Basics made by reconhope
  • The One Reborn, boss of Yahar'gul (Blood Moon), is supported by six Bell Ringers. They are all positioned in the galleries, so you'll need to ignore the boss when the battle begins and head straight for the stairways if you want to eliminate them. Otherwise, they'll begin bombarding you with homing fireballs if you damage the boss while they're still alive. If you are not damaging the boss, they will start to shoot dark energy balls to the Reborn, and looking into the game files will let us know that it does nothing; it has no effect attached to it, so it is purely for visuals.
  • If a Bell Maiden is in the vicinity of the Host's area, invasions will occur. Bell Maidens appear when partaking in co-op play,or when one uses the Sinister Resonant Bell, but there are certain areas where they reside from the start.
  • When the Bell Ringer spawns, announcing an invasion, you can hunt her down and kill her. If you manage to do so before an invasion comes, you will stop the invasion before it happens.
  • The mechanics of Bell Ringer summoning mobs in Chalice Dungeons: when she makes her emergency call for additional reinforcements. She can not make a 2nd call unless and until all 3 of the reinforcement summons have been killed. If you kill 2 of those reinforcement summons she can not do an emergency call for 2 more. She must wait until all 3 are killed then she can do her emergency call for 3 more.

Bell Ringer
Pungent Blood Cocktails don't attract this enemy, making the item ineffective.
Shaman Bone Blades affect this enemy, making it hostile to other enemies.
Bell Ringer will appear for online play.

Attack Patterns

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Sinister Summon No Continually spawns regular enemies. Summoned enemies will receive a massive defense boost until the summoner is killed.
Dark Mist No Circular area attack with a six-meter radius; quickstep backward or strafe out of the effect area. Beware this attack can be very lethal if you stay in its radius few seconds too long especially in deeper Chalice Dungeons.

Base Level: Blood Echoes, HP, Damage and Def. Multipliers

  • For enemies that also appear (or exclusively appear) in dungeons, their stats will be shown at the base level, because their exact stats at any given point are calculated from these base values. The basic formula is: Total Value = Base x A x B x C x D. Multipliers written down below were datamined directly from the game files. Multiplier A represents depth (1 - 5) of the chalice dungeon; multiplier B is layer (1 - 4) of the specific chalice dungeon; multiplier C is used when dungeon is Pthumeru Ihyll; multiplier D is for calculating blood echoes when additional curse rite is used.
