Church Giant (Axe) ❘ 教会の大男

Strong Enemy

Description

The church controls treatment of the disease, but it hunts with this large servant. Half terrifying legend, its expression is vacant, its skin pallid, its huge form oddly thin. It screams as it swings its silver weapon. A bell hangs from its neck, and when the citizens of Yharnam hear its ring, they close their doors and stay within.
  • These massive towering giants can inflict tremendous damage and will send you flying any time one of their attacks connect, but their long windup and recovery periods leave them vulnerable, and make them much less frightening than they first appear. They also walk and turn extremely slowly, allowing you to position yourself behind them where most of their attacks can't reach you. They have very high defense, enormous amounts of health, high fire and bolt resistance, and they cannot be interrupted or staggered normally; breaking their super armor with a charged attack or by hitting their heads will bring them to their knees momentarily and allow you to get in a few extra hits.
  • There is one move that can be used by all Church Giants, and while they rarely use it, you should always be on the lookout for it. If you're standing reasonably close in front of them they'll sometimes raise their leg up and use a powerful stamp, so powerful that it actually breaks their leg. When that happens you'll be able to see the bone sticking out of their knee, and if you attack it you'll do considerably more damage than normal and have the ability to stagger them. Standing in front of them does put you at greater risk from their other attacks, however, so you'll need to be careful.

Strategy

  • When approaching one of these enemies, bait an attack from as far away as possible, and then quickstep through it to get behind them. Stay in this position by strafing or quickstepping while attacking with R1 combos or charged R2s; Church Giants are immune to visceral attacks, but fully-charged swings and transformation attacks will tear through their super armor and help keep them from being able to act. Watch out for their Fast Frontal Sweep; it will not reach you directly behind them, but may clip you if they use it while turning to face you. To lower the risk of being struck by this attack, circle them clockwise; the swing starts above their right shoulder and ends at the ground to their left, so it's less likely to hit you if you're directly beneath the axe when they initiate it.

Notes

  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • Church Giants with Axe not only can break their leg from powerful slam but also from the telegraphed sweep. [image]
  • You will find some of the Church Giants kneeling in which case they are sleeping and therefore vulnerable when you are silent. In Cathedral Ward Church Giants go to sleep when time shifts from Evening to Nighttime.
  • Church Giants (Axe) in Cathedral Plaza have 718 HP/835 Blood Echoes and one on Cathedral Stairs in Cathedral Ward has 859 HP/1205 Blood Echoes

Pungent Blood Cocktails don't attract this enemy, making the item ineffective.
Shaman Bone Blades affect this enemy, making it hostile to other enemies.

Church Giant Weak Points

  • In Total and Part HP columns you will find value of the base HP without area multiplier. In Bloodborne each entity has own base HP (and NG) value which is then multiplied by the area (or part of the area) multiplier in which enemy or boss is in.
  • In the HP Percentage column you will find value of how much damage you need to deal to that body part to break it in percentage of total boss HP.
  • Enemies and Bosses can have multiple weak points which some are breakable (listed with multipliers) and take higher damage while broken while some will have only higher damage multipler the whole time (mainly listed in the notes section).
Body Part Total HP Part HP HP [%] Damage X Damage X
after breaking
Legs 400 40 10.00% 1 1.50
  • Notes: There is one move that can be used by all Church Giants, and while they rarely use it, you should always be on the lookout for it. Unlike armed Church Giants both fist versions have also powerful slam attacks with their left or right arm where they break them and you can hit the bone that sticks out of them to make them stagger for a moment, with no visceral opportunity though.
