Upper Cathedral Ward ❘ 聖堂街 上層

Location

Description

The upper level of the Cathedral Ward above, presided over by the Choir. It is home to the Orphanage across from the Church Workshop and Astral Clocktower above the Grand Cathedral.

This place was once was the seat of the old councilors to the Healing Church, scholars responsible for countless experiments. Then the young orphans they tutored became the secret brains calling themselves the Choir and split the Church in two. Now, neither those old hands nor the young orphans are anywhere to be seen.

Have the failures simply achieved new forms? Eldritch abominations yet linger, premature offspring wishing upon the stars in the Cathedral’s direction.
- written for the wiki by Lokey
  • This area is optional, not required to progress and end the game.
  • The upper echelons of the Healing Church are formed by the School of Mensis, based in the Unseen Village, and the Choir occupying the Upper Cathedral Ward. Members of the Choir are both the highest-ranking clerics of the Healing Church, and scholars who continue the work that began at Byrgenwerth.
  • The formation of the Choir began with investigations in the labyrinth. Its roots lie in the Orphanage near the Grand Cathedral. The Orphanage was a place of scholarship and experimentation, and the Choir arose from these activities. The Choir members are both the highest ranking clerics of the Church and scholars who continue the research began at Byrgenwerth. Members of the Choir cover their eyes to indicate their debt to the teachings of Master Willem.

General Notes

  • Reaching Upper Cathedral Ward: Getting to Upper Cathedral Ward requires the Upper Cathedral Key, which can be found in Yahar'gul, Unseen Village (Blood Moon). Upon reaching the rooftop that connects via a large stairway to Yahar'gul Chapel, you can drop off a gap in the railing to the right side, to land by the Holding Cell below. You must drop into the cell from above to retrieve the key. Once you have the key, head all the way to the top of the Healing Church Workshop, where you can use it to unlock the door to Upper Cathedral Ward.
  • There are no Old Hunter Summons in this area.
  • Make Contact Gesture: Examining peculiar standing corpse on the upper floor will teach you this important gesture.
  • Orphanage Key Skip: You can kill the brainsucker holding the key to Orphanage through the door , first one to your right when you enter the Orphanage, if you have a weapon with long reach: Threaded Cane or Beast Cutter. You will automatically receive the key when the brainsucker dies.
  • Elevator Inoperable: Patch 1.03 fixed bug that left elevator from Upper Cathedral Ward to Altar of Despair inoperable.
  • Spawning Scourge Beasts: on game version 1.00 there was a glitch that would make Scourge Beasts continuously spawn from Lumenflower Gardens, even during the Celestial Emissary boss fight. [video 1, video 2]
  • Sinister Bell Ringer (Online): Bell Ringer is located at further Orphanage Corridor on Upper Floor. When “bell-ringer woman” is present, versus PvP invasions are possible.

  • Upper Cathedral Bridge:
There's a Celestial Child here, leaning up against the wall directly ahead of you upon first entering the area. While these enemies move and attack very slowly, they inflict an extreme amount of Frenzy buildup when they hit you. Always have some Sedatives in your Quick Items while in this area, and be especially careful when fighting large groups of these enemies. While you're crossing the bridge, a pair of Church Servants will start walking across, try to take out the one with the lantern first, so that you don't have to deal with his ranged attacks while fighting the other one. After battling your way past a few more Celestial Children and making it to the other side of the bridge you'll be able to activate the Upper Cathedral Ward Lamp.

  • Statue Balcony:
This small balcony area has a very large number of Celestial Children on it. Try to take them out with either jumping attacks from range, or by attacking a group of them with wide-arcing horizontal attacks to reduce the risk of getting hit. Clearing them all out will allow you to pick up the Great Lake Caryll Rune from a corpse near a statue, a very useful reward that increases all of your defenses by 4%.

  • Side Entrance:
Numerous Celestial Children will emerge from amongst the statues around this side of the building, so progress slowly and try to kill all of them as they appear, to avoid ending up being surrounded. To the left of the stairs in this area you can fight your way through a group of Carrion Crows to reach another item. A Church Servant is standing guard at the top of the stairs - try to run up and fight him on the flat ground at the top rather than on the stairs. Once at the top of the stairs, if you enter the room quietly, you can sneak around and get behind the Brainsucker that's feeding on a body and land a charged R2 in his back for a visceral attack chance.

  • Orphanage Corridor:
Paths leading to either side are available to you after entering this corridor. While heading to the right will let you get an item now, the door there can only be opened from the other side, and you'll be coming back through there later. For now it's best to head left and go through the door there instead, to enter the Orphanage's Grand Hall.

  • Grand Hall:
The large chandelier hanging from the ceiling of the Grand Hall dominates the room, but if you look closely at it you'll also notice that a group of Scourge Beasts have made it their home When you reach the halfway point as you walk down the stairs, the enemies will spot you and the chandelier will come crashing to the floor. As soon as they hit the ground the Scourge Beasts will start running towards you - your safest option by far is to retreat up the stairs and go back through the doorway. The Scourge Beasts are too big to fit through the doorway, which is good, because fight all of them out in the open would be extremely dangerous.

From the safety of your position behind the doorway you can bait the Scourge Beasts into attacking, and then easily hit them during the recovery using a weapon with good reach. If there are a couple of them near the door, try using Molotovs to hit them all for a large amount of damage. Once all three have been killed, descend the stairs once again, but keep an eye out for a forth Scourge Beast that patrols around down there; try to lure it to the other side of the banister so that it can't close in on you, and attack it from beyond its reach. The large door at the far end of the hall is currently locked, and the key can be found on the floor above.

  • Storage Hallway:
There's a Brainsucker that patrols up and down this hallway. Try to time your approach when you see it walking away, because avoiding its magic attacks in the narrow area can be very difficult. Clearing the area, however, is well worth it, because you can pick up the Cosmic Eye Hunter Badge to further increase your shop inventory.

  • Service Hallway:
Near the end of the hallway here you'll see a Wandering Nightmare, and while it will be tempting to just run straight ahead after it, you need to be very careful. On the other side of the door at the far end of the hallway there's a Brainsucker waiting to ambush you as you run through it. If you want to kill the Wandering Nightmare you need to try and do so without it going past that point. By approaching from the right-hand side of the doorway you can turn your camera around to spot the Brainsucker, causing it to attempt its ambush early and completely miss. If the Wandering Nightmare is still alive at this point, you can run past the Brainsucker to try and kill it, but be mindful of the Brainsucker's magic attacks.

  • Orphanage Mezzanine:
There are a large number of items to be obtained along this mezzanine, including some Holy Chalice ritual materials. Before picking them up, make sure to deal with the Brainsucker that's patrolling the area. You have some room to maneuver here, but the Brainsucker can see you coming from a considerable distance, so you'll have to evade its magic attacks quite a few times before getting close enough to kill it. There's no real cover to make use of, so if you're having trouble closing in safely, try luring it back to the room with the ladder in it, and use the doorway there to shield you until it gets close. At the far end of the mezzanine you can open the one-way door that leads into the Grand Hall, giving you slightly quicker access to this area.

  • Orphanage Balcony:
In the middle of the balcony overlooking the Grand Hall there's a Brainsucker standing with its back to you in plain sight, but you need to be very careful when approaching it. On the opposite side of the balcony near the one-way door is a second Brainsucker, and it will immediately start using its magic attacks when it sees you. If you're careful and don't walk past the middle of the balcony, you can sneak up behind the first Brainsucker without getting hit, because all of the other Brainsucker's attacks will hit either the rail or the top of the stairs near it. When the first one has been killed, wait near the rail, and then try to time your approach between its attacks and kill it. Doing so gets you the Orphanage Key, required to unlock the door below. Before continuing, however, make sure you go through the large door in the middle of the balcony and retrieve the Make Contact Gesture from the poor soul out there.

  • Suspicious Window:
After opening the one-way door you'll notice an item on the ground to the left, and while you can pick it up safely, as soon as you start walking back along the corridor, a blue-eyed Scourge Beast will burst through the window. As soon as this happens, quickly run back through the door so that it can't follow you, and attack it from there to remain safe. Once it has been defeated, continue along corridor into the Grand Hall, and then use the Orphanage Key to unlock the door at the front.

  • Orphanage Porch:
The first thing to do once you're out on the porch is to pull the switch and open the front gate, creating a quick path back to the Lamp. There are a couple of boss battles coming up, so if you have a large amount of Blood Echoes it's worth going back to the Hunter's Dream now and leveling up some before facing them. Continue up the stairs when you're ready, and as you start to cross the bridge at the top, a lone Small Celestial Emissary will come running across to attack you; its appearance is an omen of what's to come.

  • BOSS Celestial Emissary:
Only one of the Small Celestial Emissaries at the start of this fight is the Celestial Emissary that you're trying to kill, and while they all look the same, there is a defining characteristic that you can look for. The Celestial Emissary generally does not close in to attack you, so always look for one that's hanging back while the others advance. Upon its defeat you'll automatically receive the Communion Caryll Rune, which increases the amount of Blood Vials you can carry by four. The Lumenflower Gardens Lamp will also appear in the area, and if you're running low on healing items, it's worth using it to go back to the Hunter's Dream and resupply, because there is still more to do here. Just behind the Lamp there's a large window, and if you get close to it you'll see an area on the other side that you can reach by either breaking the window with your weapon, or rolling through it. Once you're on the other side, however, you won't be able to leave until you either kill the next boss, or it kills you, so be sure you're prepared.

  • Grand Cathedral Walkways:
The walkways on the other side of the window are actually high above the Grand Cathedral, where you faced Vicar Amelia, and from the place you start you have a nice view down to the altar at which she was praying. A Celestial Child is also nearby when you first drop down, so don't get too distracted by the view and make sure you kill it quickly before you get hit The item that's hanging over the banister along the right-hand walkway is A Call Beyond, which is extremely powerful if you have the stats to use it. Two Small Celestial Emissaries are waiting in ambush on the other side of the large archway at the end of the walkways, and one of them is the very deadly Tendril version, so you need to be careful. If you approach the arch along the left-hand side of it, you can spot the normal Celestial Emissary and cause it to come running out to attack you, letting you kill it out of the field of view of the other one Once it's dead, round the corner and quickly kill the Tendril one before it can launch any of its magic attacks.
