Caryll Rune

In-Game Description

A Caryll rune that transcribes inhuman sounds.

This transcription of the Great Ones' inhuman voices ripples
like a watery reflection. This rune means "Lake," and those
who memorize it enjoy general reduced damage.

Great volumes of water serve as a bulwark guarding sleep,
and an augur of the eldritch Truth.

Overcome this hindrance, and seek what is yours.

Overview

  • Caryll Runes are special items that you can attach to your character at the workshop in the Hunter's Dream. You can use up to four at onetime, and they provide a variety of very helpful effects. Use them tactically depending on the environments you plan to explore and the enemies you expect to face.
  • Before you can make use of Runes, you'll need the Rune Workshop Tool. This is found in Hemwick after defeating the Witch of Hemwick. After you have the tool, approach the Memory Altar in the Workshop and press X to equip Runes in your memory slots. You have three normal Memory Slots for basic runes, and a fourth "Oath Memory" slot. The basic runes are for use with normal Caryll Runes, and the Oath Memory slot is for Oath Runes only. Some runes have up to three different ranks, with higher ranked runes having more powerful effects.
  • Beware if you sell any Caryll Rune they will NOT respawn in New Game Plus.

Effects

  • Great Lake reduces the damage you take from all damage types. Against enemy attacks that deal more than one type of damage, Great Lake is very useful. It can simultaneously reduce both types of damage. In the main game, there aren't that many enemies that fall into this category. In PvP other players who wield weapons like the Burial Blade, Blade of Mercy, Tonitrus, or Logarius' Wheel will find their attacks to be less effective against you. Usually, though, it's better to use one of the more specific Lake Runes.

Availability

  • Tier (1): Treasure in (Root Dungeons): Lower Hintertomb; 8jv9v6bc, Sinister Lower Hintertomb L1, bonus area before layer boss [tested May 12, 2020]

Notes

  • Unique Coffin Item Treasure (available) in (Root Dungeons): Great Lake +3% in Lower Hintertomb [All Layers] and Sinister Hintertomb [All Layers] and Great Lake +5% in Isz Gravestone [All Layers] and Sinister Isz Gravestone [All Layers], could be found in each bonus room and can only be looted once. For entire unique items list of each chalice follow to the Unique Items in Chalice Dungeons wiki page.
  • One of the five Lake Caryll Runes, the other four are Lake, Arcane Lake, Dissipating Lake and Fading Lake.
  • Clothing Defense is a PERCENTAGE reduction AFTER Physical DEF is applied. "Every 10 points of resistance is 1% damage reduction." Each type is specific and separate in this category. The entry for "Physical" (read as, Physical damage that's not specifically Thrust or Blunt) doesn't apply to Thrust or Blunt damage, as they each have their own separate numbers. Separate items of clothing stack multiplicatively, rather than additively like you might expect. Hat, chest, arms, legs of 50, 100, 40, 40 respectively for example, would yield 212, or 1000 * (1 - (.95 * .9 * .96 * .96)), rather than 230. Caryll Runes that affect damage resistance stack on top of your Clothing Defense. Note that the "Physical" defense rune increases Physical, Thrust, Blunt, and Blood. "Arcane" only affects Arcane, but not Bolt and Fire, which each have their own rune. These also stack multiplicatively on top of clothing (and each-other). A 5% rune would be like adding a clothing item with 50 defense in that category. In the example above, you'd go from 212 to 251 with a +5% rune. More information can be found in damage reduction page.

SE: Stacking Effect; SE is in case of DMG reduction runes negative, if we take example of base 0, by simply adding values of all three Great Lake runes 30+40+50 we get 120 when all Great Lake runes are equipped, but in-game we get real value 115. It's based on formula which is used to calculate DMG reduction and its interaction with SE, Runes stack multiplicatively: 1000*(1-(0.97*0.96*0.95))=115.36; 1000*0.03=30 ► 1000-30=970 ► 970*0.04=38.80 ► 970-38.80=931.20 ► 931.20*0.05=46.56 ► now add up all three values 30+38.80+46.56=115.36
