Caryll Rune

In-Game Description

A Caryll rune that transcribes inhuman sounds.

This transcription of the Great Ones' inhuman voices ripples
like a watery reflection. This rune means "Lake," and those
who memorize it enjoy reduced physical damage.

Great volumes of water serve as a bulwark guarding sleep,
and an augur of the eldritch Truth.

Overcome this hindrance, and seek what is yours.
Note 1: The same in-game description in US & UK versions. ✓

Overview

  • Caryll Runes are special items that you can attach to your character at the workshop in the Hunter's Dream. You can use up to four at onetime, and they provide a variety of very helpful effects. Use them tactically depending on the environments you plan to explore and the enemies you expect to face.
  • Before you can make use of Runes, you'll need the Rune Workshop Tool. This is found in Hemwick after defeating the Witch of Hemwick. After you have the tool, approach the Memory Altar in the Workshop and press X to equip Runes in your memory slots. You have three normal Memory Slots for basic runes, and a fourth "Oath Memory" slot. The basic runes are for use with normal Caryll Runes, and the Oath Memory slot is for Oath Runes only. Some runes have up to three different ranks, with higher ranked runes having more powerful effects.
  • Beware if you sell any Caryll Rune they will NOT respawn in New Game Plus.

Effects

  • The Lake Rune increases your physical defense. The vast majority of enemy attacks in the game deal physical damage, so this is very useful. Stacking physical damage reduction can help a lot if you like to rely on the Regain system to regenerate your health, too. Just be extra careful of enemies with special attacks and those that buff their weapons with elemental damage; physical defense won't help you against them.

Availability

  • Tier (1): Treasure in (Main Story): Hemwick Charnel Lane; at the end of broken bridge path straight from Hemwick Crossing. If you need further assistance to find the rune, you can follow the full Hemwick Charnel Lane Map.
  • Tier (2): Treasure in (Root Dungeons): Pthumerian Defilement; vxnwjixk, F/R/C Pthumerian Defilement L1, side area before layer boss [tested May 12, 2020]
  • Tier (3): Treasure in (Root Dungeons): Pthumeru Ihyll; qtpuhk46, F/R Pthumeru Ihyll L1, side area before layer boss [tested May 12, 2020], df235ysm, F/R Pthumeru Ihyll L2 [tested May 12, 2020], rg56w9w8, F/R/C Pthumeru Ihyll L2 [tested May 12, 2020]; alternatively found in False Depth Dungeon, srigzz9m, Pthumeru Ihyll L1, side area before layer boss [tested May 12, 2020]

Notes

  • Unique Coffin Item Treasure (available) in (Root Dungeons): Lake +5% in Pthumerian Defilement [All Layers] and Lake +7% in Pthumeru Ihyll [All Layers] and Sinister Pthumeru Ihyll [All Layers], could be found in each bonus room and can only be looted once. For entire unique items list of each chalice follow to the Unique Items in Chalice Dungeons wiki page.
  • One of the five Lake Caryll Runes, the other four are Arcane Lake, Dissipating Lake, Fading Lake and Great Lake.
  • Clothing Defense is a PERCENTAGE reduction AFTER Physical DEF is applied. "Every 10 points of resistance is 1% damage reduction." Each type is specific and separate in this category. The entry for "Physical" (read as, Physical damage that's not specifically Thrust or Blunt) doesn't apply to Thrust or Blunt damage, as they each have their own separate numbers. Separate items of clothing stack multiplicatively, rather than additively like you might expect. Hat, chest, arms, legs of 50, 100, 40, 40 respectively for example, would yield 212, or 1000 * (1 - (.95 * .9 * .96 * .96)), rather than 230. Caryll Runes that affect damage resistance stack on top of your Clothing Defense. Note that the "Physical" defense rune increases Physical, Thrust, Blunt, and Blood. "Arcane" only affects Arcane, but not Bolt and Fire, which each have their own rune. These also stack multiplicatively on top of clothing (and each-other). A 5% rune would be like adding a clothing item with 50 defense in that category. In the example above, you'd go from 212 to 251 with a +5% rune. More information can be found in damage reduction page.

Note: Base is value of starting DMG reduction. Values when single rune is equipped are calculated as follows, for example for effect 3% when base 0, 1000*0.03=30; when base is 100 it's 1000-100=900 ► 900*0.03=27 ► 100+27=127; when you are naked (base 0) you get 1000 and every DMG reduction (attire) you equip lowers the number (1000)
SE: Stacking Effect; SE is in case of DMG reduction runes negative, if we take example of base 0, by simply adding values of all three Lake runes 30+50+70 we get 150 when all Lake runes are equipped, but in-game we get real value 143. It's based on formula which is used to calculate DMG reduction and its interaction with SE, Runes stack multiplicatively: 1000*(1-(0.97*0.95*0.93))=143; 1000*0.03=30 ► 1000-30=970 ► 970*0.05=48.50 ► 970-48.50=921.50 ► 921.50*0.07=64.50 ► now add up all three values 30+48.50+64.50=143

Note: Value column includes all Lake runes types of DMG reduction: Phys., Thrust, Blunt and Blood. Values of all Great Lake and Lake runes are interchangeable if you have Great Lake rune +5% and Lake rune +5%, the values will be the same. Therefore for example for effect 5% when base 0, 1000*0.05=50; when base is 100 it's 1000-100=900 ► 900*0.05=45 ► 100+45=145 which applies to both runes; this is why the best setups of any Lake runes are ones with the most overall percentages; when you are naked (base 0) you get 1000 and every DMG reduction (attire) you equip lowers the number (1000)
SE: Stacking Effect; SE is in case of DMG reduction runes negative, if we take example of base 0, by simply adding all three values of the best setup for this base 50+50+70 we get 170 when +5% Great Lake and +5% & +7% Lake runes are equipped, but in-game we get real value 160. It's based on formula which is used to calculate DMG reduction and its interaction with SE, Runes stack multiplicatively: 1000*(1-(0.95*0.95*0.93))=160.67; 1000*0.05=50 ► 1000-50=950 ► 950*0.05=47.50 ► 950-47.50=902.50 ► 902.50*0.07=63.17 ► now add up all three values 50+47.50+63.17=160.67
