Brainsucker ❘ 脳喰らい

  • Brainsuckers give the impression of being weak and helpless, but they are wolves in sheep's clothing. They have extremely high physical defense but very low health, and are highly weak against thrust attacks as well as fire and bolt damage; in early areas a single Molotov or single strong thrust attack will kill them. Throwing Knives work well against Brainsuckers and offer a way of attacking from a safe distance.
  • Despite these weaknesses, they have a number of extremely dangerous attacks which make them serious threats if not dealt with immediately: they can inflict severe damage or paralyze you with long-range blasts, steal your Insight with their grab attacks and send you flying with their Head Swing. In most areas you'll find them scavenging corpses with their backs to you, allowing you to approach slowly from behind and kill them before they detect you. In Upper Cathedral Ward they patrol narrow hallways, so sneaking up on them will be much tougher. Apart from their grabs and projectiles, Brainsuckers use simple combos and arm swipes in melee combat; those encountered in the Cathedral Ward will not use any of their magic attacks, but are still dangerous if you give them time to grab you.
  • Main type of damage dealt by Brainsucker is Physical, Blunt. Some hand swipe attacks are blunt, rest are physical. More information about main damage types for all bosses are on Boss Damage Types wiki page.

Strategy

  • Whenever possible, sneak up behind them and use a charged thrust attack to finish them before they have a chance to attack you. If you aren't able to defeat them in one shot, back off and wait for them to use their slow grab or a normal combo, then hit them with a thrust attack or a Molotov during their recovery. They aren't good at dodging, so you can stand at a safe distance and hit them with a few Throwing Knives, but beware that they'll start using their energy projectiles at longer range and you'll need to time your throws carefully in order to avoid being hit. Don't attempt to knock them out of their grab attacks with gunshots or melee swings; killing the Brainsucker before it can finish them is the only way to stop these moves.
  • Due to the danger they present, Brainsuckers are top-priority targets and should be defeated first when other enemies are around. If they haven't yet spotted you, lure any other targets in the opposite direction and fight them a safe distance away. Defeating a Brainsucker will not restore any Insight stolen from you during the fight, so try to avoid being hit by their grab attacks.

Notes

  • Preset Chalice Dungeons: Lower Hintertomb, Isz Gravestone
  • Brainsucker is boss in Lower Hintertomb L1 and Isz Gravestone L1
  • Brainsucker is considered a kin even though it is not listed as such in the official guide. [tested]
  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • Stationary Grab, Quick Grab and Running Grab: Brainsucker will expand his head and drain two points of Insight
  • During Brainsucker grab attack animation, 50%-25% damage can be reduced if you are repeatedly pressing buttons (mashing). Also in this particular case losing only 1 point of Insight instead of 2.
  • You can encounter Brainsuckers with the hood on or without the hood, hooded version can use Paralyzing Blast and Paralyzing Wave to lock you in place for their grab attacks. The hood comes off when Brainsuckers use their grab attack but it has no effect on their behavior/moveset. Both variants have different stats (HP, Echoes, Defences, Multipliers & Bonuses) and drop (pool & rates).
  • Brainsuckers share Isz Merciless Watchers gem pool but with lower primary stat and a fixed arcane flat as secondary

Brainsucker
Pungent Blood Cocktails don't attract this enemy, making the item ineffective.
Shaman Bone Blades affect this enemy, making it hostile to other enemies.

Cooperation & Boss' HP


  • Having a summoned ally doesn't alter the health or difficulty of the enemies you'll fight, but it does affect the bosses. To ensure they are still a challenge, boss health is increased to 1.5x when a second co-op player enters your world, and to 2.0x when a third enters.
