Byrgenwerth ❘ ビルゲンワース

Location

Description

The university founded by Provost Willem, mentor to Laurence and other founders of the Healing Church. The lecture building is missing, replaced by a vast lake.

The results of the students’ inquiries into the arcane still wander about the schoolgrounds, along with specimens collected from their adventures through the gods’ graves. Yet Willem fixes his serene gaze on the lake glimmering with moonlight.
- written for the wiki by Lokey
  • This area is mandatory to progress and end the game.
  • Byrgenwerth is an old place of learning. The tomb of the gods, carved out below Yharnam, should be familiar to every hunter. Well, once a group of young Byrgenwerth scholars discovered a holy medium deep within the tomb. This led to the founding of the Healing Church, and the establishment of blood healing. In this sense, everything sacred in Yharnam can be traced back to Byrgenwerth. But today, the college lies deep within a tangled wood, abandoned and decrepit. And furthermore, the Healing Church has declared Byrgenwerth forbidden ground. It's unclear how many of its scholars remain alive... ...but only they know the password that allows passage through the gate. - Alfred's dialogue

General Notes

  • Byrgenwerth skip: The Lunarium Key Skip is a skip in Bloodborne in which the player exploits the location of an enemy and the level's geography in order to skip getting the Lunarium Key (an essential key item needed to progress the game forward and reach a mandatory boss). Located in Byrgenwerth, the skip revolves using the hitbox of the tail on the Fluorescent Flower enemy near the far side of the college. Using a Blue Elixer (or quitting out behind said enemy) the player can wait for an right opportunity to use the tail to boost their jump to gain enough height to clear the fence behind it. Doing so will result in immediately falling down into the lake and beginning the Rom, the Vacuous Spider boss fight.

The other way to perform this skip involves jumping off a ledge near the Byrgenwerth lamp, onto a nearby statue, and then getting a near perfect angle jump to bypass certain geometry to clip into the boss fight. This method is extremely precise and is never used in serious speedrun attempts. • Jump to Moonside Lake: Provost Willem, the old master of Byrgenwerth College, can be found sitting in his favorite rocking chair out on the Lunarium, gazing up to the moon. Talking to him will only cause him to utter the faintest of groans, while using his cane to point to towards the lake. Following Provost Willem's directions, however, is advised; if you walk to the end of the Lunarium and look down into the lake you'll notice some mysterious ripples emanating from an area of the lake below. To find out just what secrets are hidden below the surface, take the plunge and jump right in.
  • Sinister Bell Ringer (Online): Bell Ringer is located at College: Upper Floors just below the chest with Empty Phantasm Shell. When “bell-ringer woman” is present, versus PvP invasions are possible.

World Notes

  • Byrgenwerth | College: Upper Floors: The spider hides all manner of rituals, certain to reveal nothing, for true enlightenment need not be shared.
  • Byrgenwerth | College: Upper Floors: When the red moon hangs low, the line between man and beast is blurred. And when the Great Ones descend, a womb will be blessed with child.

Old Hunter Summons

Location Requirement
  • Old Hunter Henryk
    Confederate
: On the second floor, between two couches near the treasure chest.
  • He will not appear unless you have defeated him at the Tomb of Oedon (also Eileen has to survive the fight as part of her quest line) and are wearing the " Impurity" rune.
  • Younger Madaras Twin: Right next to the Byrgenwerth lamp. Walk off the little ledge, and it’ll be on that plateu with you, nestled between two trees.
  • You cannot summon him if you have already killed him outside the Small Windmill or are not wearing the " Impurity" rune.
  • Mensis Scholar Damian: In plain view outside the boss room.
  • Bear in mind that summoning him will prevent you from being able to summon Henryk or the Younger Madaras Twin in Byrgenwerth, but his habit of spamming the Choir Bell makes him well worth the tradeoff.
  • With patch v1.07 you are able to summon NPCs to come to your aid, just like cooperative play, including inside Chalice Dungeons. To do so, first you will need to acquire the “Old Hunter Bell” from the messengers in the Hunter’s Dream. In some areas you may be able to summon up to two NPC Hunters.

  • College Path:
Be careful as you walk down the path towards Byrgenwerth, because about halfway along a Garden of Eyes is waiting in ambush behind a large tree on the right. If you walk along that side of the path and use the tree for cover, you can mask your approach until you're close, and then quickly round the tree to attack it. The grab attack of the Garden of Eyes inflicts a large amount of Frenzy build-up, so if you have any Sedatives it's worth equipping them to your Quick Items for ease of use. Once you reach the Lamp, instead of following the path around to the right, keep going straight and drop down the levels. Doing so will usually allow you to get behind another Garden of Eyes that's patrolling around down the bottom.

  • Side Path:
As you approach the stairway leading around the side of the building, a Garden of Eyes will come running down the stairs towards you. Lure it backwards, rather than running forward to fight it, otherwise you'll get the attention of another one waiting around the corner to the left. After going up those stairs, the main path leads down to the Terrace on the right, but straight ahead there's a raised area with a large tree in the middle, behind which a Brainsucker is waiting. If you head to the right as soon as you reach the top of the stairs and walk behind the tree, you can get behind the Brainsucker for an easy charged R2 opportunity.

  • Terrace:
While the Terrace may seem quite safe when you first approach, running straight ahead will take you into a very nasty ambush. When you get close to the base of the Lunarium, two Gardens of Eyes will jump down from the top and land on the front edge of the terrace, near the lake. At the far end of the Terrace a Fluorescent Flower, difficult to see through the fog, is standing guard. Avoiding the Fluorescent Flower's fireballs while fighting the Gardens of Eyes is very difficult, so to make things easier, stay on the upper part of the Terrace and advance until you see the Gardens of Eyes drop down One of them should spot you and come running around the wall towards you Wait for it to come to you before fighting it, and then go around the wall and take out the second one. The Fluorescent Flower is best dealt with by attacking the glowing "flower" part with ranged attacks while using the pillars for cover. After reaching the other side of the building, make sure to pull the switch and open the gate, so that you have a quick path back in if you need it.
  • College: Lower Floors:
Once you're inside the college building you can find a chest containing a Holy Chalice ritual material tucked in behind one of the storage units on the left. You can also open the door on the other side of the room to create another access point. As soon as you begin heading up the stairs, an enemy Hunter will start making her way down; if you quickly retreat back down the stairs and hide underneath them you can often get the drop on her when she reaches the bottom. Upon reaching the top of the stairs, make sure you get the Student Attire from the chest at the back of the seating area on the left, and there's also a note to read on one of the sofas. The door leading out to the Lunarium is locked, so you'll need to continue exploring the building to find the key; be sure to inspect the bookcase on your way around to the ladder, because there is another note tucked amongst the books that you can read.

  • College: Upper Floors:
After climbing the ladder and reaching this floor, the key that's required to open the Lunarium can be found sitting on a work bench directly ahead of you. Before going back down and unlocking the door, however, it's worth continuing up the stairs to the top floor and killing the Garden of Eyes there, so that you can get the Empty Phantasm Shell.

  • Lunarium:
Provost Willem, the old master of Byrgenwerth College, can be found sitting in his favorite rocking chair out on the Lunarium, gazing up to the moon. Talking to him will only cause him to utter the faintest of groans, while using his cane to point to towards the lake. There is little else to be gained from Provost Willem, so you can kill him if you wish. Doing so will reward you with the Eye Caryll Rune, which significantly increases your Discovery rate. Following Provost Willem's directions, however, is advised; if you walk to the end of the Lunarium and look down into the lake you'll notice some mysterious ripples emanating from an area of the lake below. To find out just what secrets are hidden below the surface, take the plunge and jump right in.

  • BOSS Rom, the Vacuous Spider:
Rom is not hostile when you first enter the area, so you can run right up to him without risk, and only once you hit him will the fight begin. Upon killing Rom, a mysterious apparition will appear in the middle of the lake, and when you approach it a cut-scene will trigger. After the scene you'll find yourself back in the Cathedral Ward, standing in front of a newly-opened door Going through that door takes you back into Yahar'gul, Unseen Village, where things are quite different than before. Time will also have moved forward at this point, and night will have turned to Blood Moon; make sure to check back with any NPCs whose quests you've been following, as many of them will have advanced at this point. If you drop down into the lake again from Byrgenwerth, a new Lamp will appear so that you can leave the area again.
