Pthumeru

The underground labyrinth is extremely large, and changes its form the deeper it goes. Each part has its own unique appearance and tendencies, though, and these are divided into four distinct areas: Pthumeru, Hintertomb, Loran and Isz.

Pthumeru specifics

  • The standard area type, usually with a basic room structure.
  • No particular elemental type dominates.
  • Kidnappers appear often.
  • Merciless Watchers guard floor levers.

General Notes

  • Defeating the Blood-starved Beast in Old Yharnam will allow you to craft the first Chalice Dungeon. In order to craft this dungeon you'll need two 'Ritual Blood (1 )'s, which can be found in the Ritual Hall of Old Yharnam. You can also purchase them from the Messenger Bath shop in the Hunter's Dream after acquiring the Radiant Sword Hunter Badge and defeating the Blood-starved Beast. The first of the Pthumerian dungeons, this labyrinth will ease you into the job of tomb prospecting.
  • Old Hunter Allies: With patch v1.07 a wide variety of new and existing NPCs have been added to the main game, the Old Hunters areas and the Chalice Dungeons to aid you during the hunt, particularly during boss fights. The conditions for summoning these allies vary; the “Old Hunter Bell” is a universal requirement for calling any of them. In some areas you may be able to summon up to two NPC Hunters. In Pthumerian Labyrinth you can summon Tomb Prospector Olek on Layer 3 for Watchdog of the Old Lords boss, his sign is in the left corner of the locked exit gate room that leads to the boss, just as you enter.
  • Reward for completing Pthumerian Labyrinth, Patch Notes v1.04: Players can now acquire a Short Ritual Root Chalice by trading Insight. The Chalice will become available after completing the Pthumeru Chalice dungeon. Players can now use the Short Ritual Root Chalice’s quick matching feature in the early part of the game

  • Step 01:
The pool of liquid at the base of the ladder here is in fact oil, so you'll need to approach with caution - especially since the Labyrinth Watcher at the top of the ladder will start throwing molotov cocktails at you when you get close. Instead of trying to climb the ladder with the enemy waiting at the top, run past the oil so that you're underneath the ledge. This will cause it walk off and drop down so that you to kill it easily.

  • Step 02:
A Kidnapper is lurking just past the tunnel, so watch out for him when entering this area to explore the rooms beyond.

  • Step 03:
This room is directly below the swinging axe trap, and it's where you will end up if you get knocked off while trying to cross the bridge. If you have not already killed the Bell Ringer in the lever room, the Labyrinth Watchers that she spawns will keep dropping off the bridge into this room; listen out for the sounds of one in the area while you explore so that they don't catch you unaware.
  • Step 04:
Numerous Labyrinth Rats have taken up residence in this cave. There are a couple of rats near the entrance to the cave so take them out first before going deeper in towards the main group. It doesn't take a lot to kill the rats, so you can be quite aggressive when dealing with them. If they start surrounding you, however, make use of the nearby cart to try and split the group.

  • Step 05:
You will need to cross a stone bridge hazarded by three swinging axes here to reach the floor lever room for this level. Negotiating this hazard can be thanks to the Labyrinth Watcher on the other side throwing extremely potent poison daggers at you Run past the first swinging axe to get in range, and then use your Hunter's Pistol, other ranged weapon such as Throwing Knives, to take out the Labyrinth Watcher. The next two axes are close together and you'll need to make it past both of them in one go; watch their movement, and time your dash for when they just start to move away from the middle of the bridge.

  • Step 06:
The first thing to deal with in this room is the Bell Ringer, because killing her will stop her from spawning more Labyrinth Watchers. She's usually patrolling along the ledge in the middle of the room, so after taking out any Labyrinth Watchers that come after you initially, run up and kill her before she spawns more. A normal Labyrinth Watcher also patrols up and down the stairs; wait for it to come down the stairs and kill it there, so that you don't have to worry about it later

Head up the stairs next, but make sure not to run once you get near the top; there are quite a few enemies up here, but if you walk you can get close to most of them without being detected, which will make the fight much easier. A Labyrinth Watcher has taken up position behind a cloud of incense near the top of the stairs, and it will start throwing poison knives at you as soon as it sees you. If you keep walking forward, the knives will get blocked by the nearby pillar Once you reach the pillar, the Labyrinth Watcher will run around it, so deal with it up close.

Hug the wall at the back of the room and slowly follow it along behind the lever until you reach the Labyrinth Watcher on the other side, and then kill it. You should be able to walk up behind the Merciless Watcher now and use a charged R2 in its back, with Visceral Attack follow-up. If that doesn't finish it off, quickly move in and try to kill it before it turns around and attacks you. There is one more Labyrinth Watcher standing near the front of this upper section, and if you manage to kill the Merciless Watcher without causing much noise, you can often sneak up behind this enemy for an easy victory

  • Step 01:
Directly ahead from the entrance there's a pressure plate on the floor that when stepped on will cause a small group of Labyrinth Watchers to appear in front of you; it's worth triggering the trap straight away so that you can deal with the enemies while you're expecting them, rather than accidentally triggering it later. The wooden coffin leaning against the wall just past that pressure plate also has another Labyrinth Watcher hiding it, so run up and attack it after clearing out the other enemies.
  • Step 02:
Take out the Labyrinth Watchers scattered along this corridor, but be careful when you enter the room at the end, because as you cross over the motif in the middle of the floor, a group of Labyrinth Watchers will appear around you. Quickly retreat back through the doorway before they close in on you and fight them as they come through it. A Kidnapper stands in wait at the bottom of the stairs in this room, so you should head down there as quickly as possible so that you can fight him on the flat ground rather than on the stairs. Once he's dead, open the chest to claim the two Ritual Blood (2) materials.

  • Step 03:
There is no door anymore: Rush to the opening of this room in order to funnel in the Labyrinth Watchers summoned by the Bell Ringer so you can funnel them through and any other regular Labyrinth Watchers. Once you have cleared a path, head straight in and vanquish the Bell Ringer. Run to the middle of the room, where you can find the Bell Ringer patrolling - kill her to stop anymore Labyrinth Watchers spawning.

  • Step 04:
At the bottom end of this room a Merciless Watcher is standing guard never the lever you need to pull. If you walk down the stairs closest to the room entrance and hug the wall, you can sneak around behind him and land a charged R2 in his back for an easy victory. If he does happen to spot you, run around the nearby cart and keep it between you and him while he attacks, and then hit him during his recovery periods.

  • Step 05:
The Watcher Chieftain in this fight has less health and moves slower than the other two enemies. So it's worth trying to lure the other two away first, and then go back and focus on the chieftain to kill. Upon completing this fight you will automatically receive the Pthumeru Root Chalice, which will allow you to create randomly generated Pthumeru dungeons.

  • Step 01:
Be careful as you open the door leading into the pit room, because there's a Labyrinth Watcher patrolling around the other side and it can be quite close when you open the door. The exit gate is directly in front of you, but since you need to unlock it first, approach the edge of the pit so that you can see the Labyrinth Watcher down there, and then drop down and kill it.

  • Step 02:
There's a Bell Ringer patrolling the raised section in the middle of this large garden area and a large group of enemies that she spawned will be waiting for you near the end of the tunnel that leads into the garden. Try to fight them back from the end of the tunnel, because there's also a Labyrinth Watcher on the raised section in the middle that will operate the cannon once you're within range. Head around to the right from the end of the tunnel once the initial group of enemies has been dealt with, until you come to a large set of stairs. The Bell Ringer will have spawned more enemies by this time, so kill them as they come running down the stairs, and then quickly run up and kill her before she can spawn anymore.

If you head just to the side of the cannon you should have a clear line of sight to one of the Fluorescent Flowers. Use ranged attacks to target the flower part and kill it easily from here. It's a much better choice to kill it from range if you can, because there's also a Wandering Nightmare close to it, and it's quite likely that it would disappear before you could kill the Fluorescent Flower at close range. You can see a second Fluorescent Flower, but from here it's much harder to target its flower, so you can either try luring it forward first with a Throwing Knife or Molotov Cocktail, or, head down there and use the pillars for cover until you're within range, and then shoot the flower to kill it. A Blue Elixir will also let you get close if you have one.
There are a couple more Labyrinth Watchers standing under the raised section, but unless you go under there they won't see you. The major remaining threat is a Kidnapper that patrols the entire area, so you'll need to watch out for him as you go around collecting the items. The Fluorescent Flowers often drop Arcane Hazes, and you'll need a large number of them for crafting some of the later dungeons, so it's worth remembering that you can get to them here quite quickly. If you want, you can also skip nearly all of the combat in this area by pulling the switch to lower a cage elevator near their respective positions. By getting into the cage elevator you can go straight up to the balcony that runs around the garden and avoid having to deal with the enemies.

  • Step 03:
Regardless of which way you're approaching from, it's worth coming up to this room to get the three Tomb Mold (1) items from the chest at the back. You'll also find a Pilgrim wandering around the room, but since it's non-hostile you can simply leave it alone if you wish The same cannot be said, however, of the three Labyrinth Watchers that can ambush you when you get near the doorway that leads out onto the balcony area. If you head out onto the balcony after they spawn you can force them to bunch up in the doorway, making them easier to kill.

  • Step 04:
A Watcher Chieftain stands guard over the lever in this room, but if you walk around the right-hand side as you enter and follow the wall along, you can get quite close to him before he spots you. There's a pressure plat that triggers a flame arrow trap in this area as well, and the Chieftain is positioned such that you can step on the plate, and then move out of the way to hit him with the arrow.

  • Step 05:
While you can just proceed straight to the boss after unlocking the gate, it's worth taking the path off to the right first, because there are quite a few items you can get, including a number of important dungeon crafting materials.

  • Step 06:
The Merciless Watcher that stands guard over the coffin at the bottom of this room wields a pistol, so while it's approaching you, stand behind one of the statues at the top of the stairs to use it as cover. Once he's close, wait for him to reload before attacking him. The coffin contains four Ritual Blood (2), so if you picked up the other two on this level, you will have enough to create the Central Pthumerian Labyrinth with the Chalice you get from the boss at the end.
