Patches the Spider ❘ 蜘蛛のパッチ

NPC

Description

  • A familiar face with an unfamiliar body, Patches will make his presence known once you've entered the Forbidden Woods, from which point he will take every possible opportunity to force the Tonsil Stone upon you and lure you into the clutches of his illegitimate god, Amygdala. The first place you're likely to encounter him is at the house near the kennels and the portcullis in the Forbidden Woods; with the Tonsil Stone in your hands, you'll be able to access the Lecture Building and the Nightmare Frontier, allowing you to complete Patches' quest and receive the associated rewards. He'll later appear in the Chalice Dungeons as a merchant, assisting you during your explorations by providing much-needed and accordingly overpriced items.

Locations

  • After Vicar Amelia is defeated and Forbidden Woods is entered, Patches' voice appears behind any lit window and door of Yharnam Residents in the world to give you the Tonsil Stone.
  • Lecture Building, behind a closed door on 1st floor, which can be accessed through the 2nd floor.
  • Nightmare Frontier, cliff over poison swamp.
  • Various Root Chalice Dungeons as a merchant

Progression

1.
Central Yharnam / Cathedral Ward / Forbidden Woods / Hemwick Charnel Lane Residence of any Yharnamites [Night / Blood Moon]
When you enter the Forbidden Woods, he will take over various residents in and around Yharnam, speak to him in any of these locations to receive the Tonsil Stone.
Note: If you didn't interact with any residents during the nighttime, Patches will replace only three residents during the Blood Moon: Young Girl & Older Sister; Male in Healing Church Workshop; Village Alleyways - Grounds Level and Female in Forbidden Woods Village Outskirts on path to Subterranean Cave Entrance. All other residents are not available and will have prompt "No response".
2.
Cathedral Ward Entrance of Yahar'gul [Night / Blood Moon]
Allow the False God clinging to the wall above the entrance to grab you. With the Tonsil Stone in your possession, you'll be brought to the Lecture Building rather than killed.
3.
Lecture Building 1F Patches' Lab [Night / Blood Moon]
Speak to him and proceed through the Lecture Hall to the Nightmare Frontier.
4.
Nightmare Frontier Lower Caves [Night / Blood Moon]
Approach his position to initiate an event in which he shoves you off the cliff.
5.
Lecture Building 2F Patches' Lab [Blood Moon]
Enter his hideout through the floor hatch behind the Church Giant and speak to him to receive a gesture. Speak to him again and select either dialogue prompt, then speak to him a final time to receive a rune.
6.
Root Chalice Dungeons
After confronting Patches face-to-face in the Lecture Building and completing his quest by talking to him after you defeat Amygdala and Micolash, he'll appear in the Chalice Dungeons on the extremely rare occasion to sell you items at drastically inflated prices. You will find him hanging upside-down from the ceiling, you have to watch carefully above you while exploring to avoid missing him. (more about his triggers to depart into dungeons in the notes)

Patches in Disguise

Notes

  • Triggers to depart into dungeons as rare merchant: Patches on the table, Kill Amygdala and Kill Micolash. Common misconception is that this dialogue is the final trigger, but it is not. "Ahh, well met. This is a most pleasing encounter. You see, I must depart erelong. My god is lost to me, so I must away to find another. If the fates are kind, out paths may cross again. Sooner still, if you were to take the leap... Heh heh heh... Hah hah hah!" You must wait out that dialogue completely, which sets a flag on which then prepares his final talk script: Oh, think not of poor Amygdala. Upon that piteous bastard, you bestowed salvation. Heh heh... All's well, that ends well... Heh heh heh... He will then loop with: Oh, think not of poor Amygdala. Upon that piteous bastard, you bestowed salvation. Then, once you leave the Lecture Hall, the final flag gets set on and he will leave for the dungeons.
  • Preset Chalice Dungeons: None
  • Any residential NPC that was sent into safe place (Iosefka's Clinic or Oedon Chapel) won't be replaced by Patches the Spider.
  • Due to sequence breaking [Timezone Manipulation] you can see that Eileen and Patches have different triggers to progress their quest lines despite both have essentially enter the Forbidden Woods trigger. It's irrelevant unless you're sequence breaking, the trigger for Eileen to disappear / go blood drunk is you "entering forbidden woods", as in, the "Forbidden Woods" title card comes up but Patches can be triggered before that if you just go down the ladder and then come up again, he'll be at the window and Eileen will still be in Central Yharnam. If you go all the way out of the cave, Eileen disappears.
  • He will not drop Blood Dreg when Corruption Oath Caryll rune is equipped.
  • Acquiring any weapon that's new in The Old Hunters DLC will also unlock its Uncanny and Lost variant in Chalice Bath Messengers & Patches, the Spider shop, for the same price as normal variant. Purchasing these variants will then make them available back in the regular Bath Messengers shop.
  • Patches as rare merchant has been confirmed to appear in Isz Root s6duf98m in the first room and Lower Loran Root f28prvum on Layer 2.
  • Aggroed Patches (following same rule as beast transformed Gilbert) is considered as NPC for cooperators & adversaries and cannot be damaged by them. However other enemies can damage him and vice versa even though they are not hostile to each other.
  • In Nightmare of Mensis near to Brain of Mensis you can find room full of spiders with Patches head, though they are hostile and don't speak.

Patches
Pungent Blood Cocktails attract this NPC if aggroed, making it vulnerable for few seconds.
Shaman Bone Blades don't affect this NPC if aggroed, making the item ineffective.

Cooperation & NPCs

  • Note that cooperators can not damage the NPCs, as they only see the transparent silhouette of it. Therefore if you make the NPC hostile your cooperator isn't able to help you other than to "body block" it.

Indoors
...Oh, a hunter of beasts, are you? Glory be. You know not the value you possess. ...But, more's the pity... The hours of the night are many, and the beasts more than I can count. A veritable hunt unending! Not even death offers solace, and the blood imbibes you. Ha, a most frightful fate, oh my. But I'm willing to do you a kindness. Step lightly round to the right of the great cathedral, and seek an ancient, shrouded church. ...The gift of the godhead will grant you strength... Yes, I'm unquestionably certain, heheh...

Indeed, I should think not! I shared with you a thing most secret. Now you're witness to a miracle, and all the stronger for it! You should appreciate it, if you've a grain of gratitude in you! Heh heh... yes, appreciate it! Hah hah hah!

Oh, it pains me to hear it. You've made yourself a misreckoning. I shared with you a thing most secret. Now you're witness to a miracle, and all the stronger for it! It's plain as a pikestaff.
