Consumable

In-Game Description

Exploding molotov cocktail that is thrown behind.

Allows for more manoeuvring compared to an ordinary
molotov cocktail, and can catch foes off guard.

Since the tragedy that struck Old Yharnam, fire has become
a staple in beast hunts, and is thought to cleanse impurity.

Certain types of beasts have an abnormal fear of flame.
Note 1: The same in-game description in US & UK versions. ✓
Note 2: Original Japanese text on Original Japanese Item Index page. ✓

Effects

  • In terms of damage, the Rope Molotov is identical to the normal Molotov; the difference is how it is thrown. Instead of tossing the Rope Molotov into the air, your character will drop it on the ground directly behind you. At first, this may seem like a negative as it can't be aimed, but Rope Molotovs are very useful. Do note, though, that locking-on to the target you want to hit doesn't work; these are much better when used unlocked. Rope Molotov damage is increased in the same ways normal Molotov damage is, so Oil Urns are still a good support item.
  • Many enemies and bosses will chase you very aggressively, and a Rope Molotov can be used to deal damage while running away. This applies in fights against other players, as well; if you are being chased, a Rope Molotov can send a strong message: "Back off, or die in a fire!" It creates a small area of effect, so you don't even need a direct hit. If you hit an enemy with an Oil Urn and then fake a retreat, you can catch them off guard with a burst of damage.
  • Rope Molotovs are also great when you are being surrounded; keep facing the biggest threat, and use one of these if another enemy approaches from behind. Another special feature of Rope Molotovs is that they are much faster to use than normal Molotovs. If, for example, a boss like Vicar Amelia is staggered, you can turn your back and spam Rope Molotovs very quickly. The key to using Rope Molotovs in general is to play without locking-on. You can hold 10 in your inventory.

  • Powder Keg Hunter Badge: This badge can be acquired from (dropped by) Retired Hunter Djura in Old Yharnam. In addition to unlocking the Powder Keg hunter weapons, this badge will make Oil Urn and Rope Molotov Cocktails available for sale, providing you with a backup source of ranged attacks and an extremely helpful means of quick dispatching beast enemies weak to fire.

Scaling

  • Scaling determines how much additional damage a tool deals. The tool stat bonus, indicated by a letter grade of S / A / B / C / D / E, and the character's stat's current level each correspond to a percentage value. These are multiplied together and against the tool base damage to determine the bonus damage received. Rope Molotov Cocktail has letter grade of D for Strength and A for Arcane. In the table below you will find exact (datamined) AR values for featured character stats.
Strength Skill Bloodtinge Arcane AR (phys.) AR (fire)
-- -- -- -- 40 190
10 -- -- 10 40.6 199.5
25 -- -- 25 46 285
25 -- -- 50 46 351.5
50 -- -- 50 50.2 351.5
10 -- -- 99 40.6 380
99 -- -- 99 52 380
  • Rope Molotov Cocktail has 0.3 STR scaling and 1 ARC scaling (fire damage).
  • Rope Molotov Cocktail has Base AR 40 Phys and 190 Fire.

Notes

  • Available for purchase after obtaining Powder Keg Hunter Badge.
  • Only difference to Molotov Cocktail is style of throw [thrown behind] and faster animation [spam].
  • Effective when surrounded by enemies, faking retreat [chase] and spam when strong enemy/boss is staggered.
  • The Key of Rope Molotov is play without locking-on.
  • Fire DMG can be boosted by Oil Urns and does extra DMG on counter-hits.
  • Double DMG bonus against staggered enemies.
  • Molotovs have area-of-effect therefore useful against groups of enemies.
