Isz

The underground labyrinth is extremely large, and changes its form the deeper it goes. Each part has its own unique appearance and tendencies, though, and these are divided into four distinct areas: Pthumeru, Hintertomb, Loran and Isz.

Isz specifics

  • Isz dungeons are closely connected to the Cosmos, giving them an other-worldly appearance.
  • Kin-type enemies and bosses appear often.
  • Celestial Children appear in great numbers.
  • Blood Gems that appear in Isz dungeons have a tendency towards Damp.
  • Brainsuckers guard floor levers.

General Notes

  • The Great Isz Chalice required for this dungeon is acquired by defeating Ebrietas, Daughter of the Cosmos. You can find her by reaching the Altar of Despair after clearing the Upper Cathedral Ward. Defeating her also unlocks the Pearl Slug basic ritual crafting item in the Insight Trade shop in the Hunter's Dream, three of which are needed in the crafting of this dungeon. You can also collect one Pearl Slug on the ground floor of the Byrgenwerth College Building, and another two in the Upper Cathedral Ward if you wish to save spending your Insight.
  • The celestial, other-worldly Isz dungeons seem ancient and overgrown, with all sorts of weird and wonderful foliage from floor to ceiling, making it hard to spot the many traps you'll encounter. As with all Depth five Chalice Dungeons, it's better to take this one on in an online co-op team in order to maximize your chances of success. The whole team should be focusing on interrupting and staggering enemies. It's also worth bringing a weapon that's strong against Kin type enemies, since you'll be running into them here.
  • Old Hunter Allies: With patch v1.07 a wide variety of new and existing NPCs have been added to the main game, the Old Hunters areas and the Chalice Dungeons to aid you during the hunt, particularly during boss fights. The conditions for summoning these allies vary; the “Old Hunter Bell” is a universal requirement for calling any of them. In some areas you may be able to summon up to two NPC Hunters. In Isz Gravestone you can summon Mensis Scholar Damian on Layer 3 for Ebrietas, Daughter of Cosmos boss, his sign is to the right of the stairs leading down to the boss room. Summoning Damian will prevent you from being able to summon Waller or Gremia, but his ability to use the Choir Bell with reckless abandon is a considerable asset. You can also summon Tomb Prospector Gremia on Layer 3 for Ebrietas, Daughter of Cosmos boss, the summon point for Tomb Prospector Gremia can be found behind a rundown old carriage, just to the right of the entrance to the boss room. You can also summon Madman Wallar on Layer 3 for Ebrietas, Daughter of Cosmos boss, this summoning point can be found in the room below the one containing the shop that sells the Sinister Isz Root Chalice. If you enter via the long corridor the boulder trap, it will be in the corner to the right. Make sure after summoning him that you exit the shortcut gate you can open in this room so he doesn't get crushed by the boulder!

  • Step 01:
There's a Wandering Nightmare around the corner to the left in this room, but if you want to kill it before it can disappear you'll need stay clear of the entrance to the room and lure all of the other enemies out of there first. The large group of Labyrinth Rats are the real concern, and after they spot you you may want to fall back to the circular room with the ladder, because you'll be able to use the cage there as cover. If you see them group up, consider using some Molotovs or other area of effect attacks. There's a Labyrinth Watcher near the entrance, but he moves much slower than the rats, so you shouldn't have to worry about him till they're dead.
  • Step 02:
At the midpoint of this staircase is a new kind of trap that you'll need to be especially wary of. The trap area is marked by a circular ring of candles, and if you step into the circle you'll immediately be warped down to the room from Step 01. If you haven't already cleared out that room you'll be surrounded by enemies and in an extremely, bad situation; your best option is to run back out of the room to create some distance.

  • Step 03:
Along with the Brainsucker guarding the lever at the top of the stairs in this room, there are also some Celestial Children at the bottom of them. While the Celestial Children do move quite slowly, it's still best to take them all out before going up the stairs and fighting the Brainsucker, just in case one of them hits you in the back; the Frenzy buildup from their attacks is very strong, and getting Frenzied would almost certainly lead to death. When you take on the Brainsucker, remember to use thrusting attacks to take it down quickly.

  • Step 04:
Be extremely cautious as you approach this room, because there are a lot of dangerous enemies inside. The Primary threats are a Keeper of the Old Lords along with his two Keeper's Hunting Dogs, as well as a number of Celestial Children and a Nightmare Apostle. To start with, slowly walk up to the door so that you can see inside and watch the patrol route of the Keeper and his two Dogs; wait for them to get far way, and then try to kill off some of the smaller enemies near the entrance.

When the patrolling group starts to come back towards you, use a Pungent Blood Cocktail to pull the Dogs away from the Keeper. Once they're distracted, you can use a Shaman Bone Blade to make them kill each other. If you don't have one of those, you should lure the dogs down to the bottom of the spiral staircase and fight them there, so that you can use the pillars for cover. The dogs have a large amount of health, so you may want to use more Blood Cocktails if you have them.

After killing them, head back into the room and try to finish off the remaining small enemies without the Keeper detecting you, so that they're not in the way when you fight him. Try to keep the fight with him towards the entrance half of the room; there's a Wandering Nightmare near the back that you don't want to disturb until you're ready. Also in this room is a wall that you can hit to reveal a hidden passage leading to a chest.

  • Step 05:
The warp trap at the halfway point on the stairs here will take you straight into the room with the Keeper of the Old Lords and a number of other enemies, so if you haven't' already cleared that room out, make sure you avoid the trap at all costs.

  • Step 01:
A large number of Nightmare Apostles dangle from the ceiling in this room, but because of the lengths of cloth that are suspended between the roots, you won't be able to use ranged attacks to knock them down. You can, however, trigger them to drop in manageable numbers by walking slowly into the room. After the one closest to the entrance has been killed, walk along the right-hand wall and get the ones on that side to drop down one at a time The two remaining ones on the other side of the room will drop down at the same time when you approach, so shoot one of them to knock it over while you kill the other one.
  • Step 02:
Take out the small group of Celestial Children on tho upper part of this room without getting too close to the stairs if possible, because there's a Brainsucker down there guarding the lever. The Brainsucker here does not use any magical attacks, so go down the stairs until it spots you, and then try to time a charged R2 to connect as it comes running in.

  • Step 03:
You can find a couple of Pearl Slugs to help replenish your supplies after creating the dungeon in this room, and thankfully the enemies that are present in the room all move very slowly, so you can run past them if you wish. If you decide to take on the Gels, make sure you use fire based attacks, because anything else would take an extremely long time to kill them.

  • Step 04:
The only enemy on the upper floor of this room is a small Celestial Emissary patrolling to the left of where you enter, so kill it before picking up all the items. If you go down the stairs, you'll find another small Celestial Emissary near the bottom; kill it and then collect all of the items on the middle floor. After going down the large stairs to the bottom floor, follow the passage around to the right to reach a Wandering Nightmare that's hiding near the back. Be careful when walking around on this floor, however, because there are a couple of pressure plates that will summon groups of Labyrinth Watchers if stepped on.

  • Step 05:
While on first inspection it may appear that this room only has the two Brainsuckers guarding the coffin at the other end, there is in fact a small Celestial Emissary hidden behind the pillar on the left. If you walk around to the left of that pillar you can sneak up behind him and use a charged R2 for an easy victory. Of the two Brainsuckers, only the one on the left as you look into the room will use magic, so it poses by far the biggest threat. Your strategy for taking on both of them should revolve around staying safe from its paralyzing ranged attacks.

By continuing to walk along the side of the room you can use the next pillar ahead to block the magical attacks of the closest Brainsucker once it starts using them, and at the same time, the other Brainsucker will come running around to fight you in close range. The magic-using Brainsucker does not move very much, so as long as you keep the fight behind the pillar, you can remain safe from its magic. Once the first one has been killed, stay hidden behind the pillar for a while and the other one will lose track of you. When that happens you can sneak around the pillar and use a charged R2 in its back.

  • Step 01:
As soon as you enter this room you'll see a Gravekeeper Scorpion hiding behind a tombstone just ahead, so if you have any Arcane-based weapons, it's worth equipping them here. Try to keep the fight near the entrance, because a Hunter is standing not too far away, and you don't want to draw him into the fight prematurely. Once the Scorpion is down, move up and start fighting the Hunter, and if you need cover or just want to create some space, use the two carts in the corner nearby. Two more Scorpions can be found down to the left side of the room, and you should try to lure them back towards you, because there's a Wandering Nightmare further in and you should avoid disturbing it until you're ready so that it doesn't disappear.
  • Step 02:
If you want to get the Blood Gem from the chest at the top of this room, you're going to have to fight your way through a very large number of enemies. In total you'll have to face four non-magic using Brainsuckers, two magic-using Small Celestial Emissaries and two Scourge Beasts. The first enemy you should deal with is a Brainsucker facing the wall on the right, but shortly after you enter the room, the Small Celestial Emissary will begin launching spells at you. If you start walking to the right upon entering the room, you should be able to get behind the pillar near the Brainsucker and use it for cover. Once there, wait for an opening to use a charged R2 from behind against the Brainsucker, and then finish it off with a Visceral Attack, so that you can use the invincibility to avoid any incoming magic.

Run to the opposite side of the room now, and while using the pillars there for cover, hit the Brainsucker on the stairs with a ranged attack to lure it to you, so that you can fight it from behind the pillar. The Celestial Emissary should be your next target. As you move further into the room, however, not only will you have to use the pillars to block the attacks from that one, but the second one on the upper part of the room will also starting attacking. Wait for an opening, and then quickly run up the stairs to the ledge and fight the Celestial Emissary there while you're close to the wall, so that the one above cannot hit you. After killing it, walk along the ledge and take out the Brainsucker that's crouching with its back to you at the other end.

Depending on how much noise you make during those fights, one of the Scourges Beasts may jump down from the upper part, so make sure you keep watch just in case. Continue up the stairs near the Brainsucker you just killed, and when you near the top, throw a Pungent Blood Cocktail towards the coffin to distract the Scourge Beasts, and then quickly run up and take out the remaining Celestial Emissary. A final Brainsucker can also be found on the opposite side of this area, so keep the fight with the Scourge Beasts away from it by throwing Blood Cocktails near the stairs you came up. If you manage to kill them without disturbing the Brainsucker, you'll be able to walk over and use a charged R2 from behind since it's facing away from you.

  • Step 03:
There's a large group of Small Celestial Emissaries patrolling around the middle of this room, but thankfully none of them use magic so you only have to be careful once you get close to them. Because they're bunched up so tightly, you may also want to use some Molotovs to weaken them as you approach. Try not to go too far into the room while fighting them, however, because two Scourge Beasts are lurking back there, obscured by the smoke. When you want to close in to take them on, throw a Pungent Blood Cocktail towards the smoke so that you can safely approach and attack them while they're distracted. There's a Wandering Nightmare along the back wall of the room, with another group of patrolling Celestial Emissaries nearby; run up and kill the Wandering Nightmare first, and then deal with this group of Celestial Emissaries in the same manner as the first.
