Basic Information

  • In order to attach gems to your weapons, you'll need three things. First, you'll need a gem. Second, you'll need a weapon that can equip a gem; this means you'll need to upgrade your weapon to unlock gem slots. Finally, you'll need the Blood Gem Workshop Tool. It can be obtained just before entering Oedon Chapel in Central Yharnam. With those elements in place, you can attach gems to your weapon by approaching the workbench in the Hunter's Dream and selecting "Blood Gem Fortification." More details for individual effects can be found in Gem Effects page.

Blood Gems: Radial, Triangle, Waning, Circle and Droplet

Radial / Triangle / Waning / Blood
  • Most radial blood gems have effects that bear upon physical attacks. Radial Gems drop from Phtumeru dungeons.
  • Most triangular blood gems have effects that provide attribute bonuses and extra effects. Triangular Gems drop from Isz dungeons.
  • Most waning blood gems provide rare special effects such as fire, bolt, or healing. Waning Gems drop from Loran dungeons.
  • Circular blood gems are normally used to fortify firearms.
  • Droplet blood gems are special gems that adapt to various weapons and shapes, naturally making them highly prized among hunters.
  • Blood Gems have primary effect and possibly lesser secondary effect.
  • The best Blood Gems comes from depth 5 dungeons.
  • Blood Gems Out-Of-Shape - in rare occasion gem breaks the rules and comes in shape (radial/triangle/waning/circle) from other common chalice dungeons´ shapes and from enemies that by default don't drop them; e.g. getting a triangle gem in Pthumeru or Loran chalices
  • Blood Gems Out-Of-Effect - in very rare occasion gem breaks the rules of what effects it can have and apply secondary effects from other common chalice dungeons´ effect and from enemies that by default don't drop those 2nd stats; e.g. getting flat arcane +15 secondary stat in Pthumeru or Loran chalices
  • Beware - equipping your firearm with any elemental blood gem [arcane, bolt & fire] will prevent you from buffing your right hand weapon despite it being "buffable" [physical damage]

Blood Gems 101: Understanding and Farming [guide by altairnaruhodou]

Part 1 - What is a Blood Gem? The basics

  • Blood Gems are in-game items that can be embedded into your weapons to make them more powerful. They drop from mob enemies in the base game, and each chalice dungeon boss has a guaranteed gem drop (see below: Chalice Dungeons)

  • We will see later on how to get the best Gems. For now, let's analyze how Gems work.

1.1 - Before we say anything else...
  • There are two starting facts that anyone looking into Blood Gems should now:
►Blood Gems are virtually absent from the base game locations.
►The place to go when you need Blood Gems are the Chalice Dungeons.

  • Almost all the Gems that are in the base game are very weak, and the only source of stronger Gems are the Winter Lanterns in Mergo's Loft or the DLC. However, due to the increase in difficulty, having stronger Gems becomes more and more important as you progress.

  • Blood Gems are 95% of the reason the Chalice Dungeons exist and are delved into. So, if you want to farm good gems, get ready to go spelunking!

1.2 - Gem properties
  • A Blood Gem has several properties which impact its functioning.
►Rating. This number goes from 1 to 20, and determines how high the ATK rate of the gem is.
►Shape. The shape of a gem determines in which weapon slots it can fit.
►Primary effect. The defining effect of a gem, which determines what damage type (Physical, Fire etc.) the gem deals.
►(Optional) Secondary effect. A bonus effect which adds up to the weapon AR. Only found on some gems.
►(Optional) Tertiary effect. A bonus effect which adds up to the weapon AR. Only found on some gems that are not Cursed.
►(Optional) Curse. A downside to the gem, pulled randomly out of six possibilities. Cursed gems are jinxed, but their ATK value greatly increases in return.
1.3 - Gem imprints and shapes
  • There are five possible shapes a gem can have. The shape has no impact on the effects of the gem, but it can be more commonly tied to certain effects, for reasons we will see later.

  • All weapons have up to three gem imprints with one the gem shapes each. A weapon imprint will only accept a gem of the same shape, with the exception of Droplets.

  • Here is the list of gem shapes.
►Radial. The most common gem type, mostly associated with Physical damage.
►Triangle. Rarer gem type, mostly associated with Physical, Elemental and Arcane damage.
►Waning. Rarer gem type, mostly associated with Elemental damage.
►Circle. Gem type that is unique to Bloodtinge gems and weapons. Can drop off-shape from certain enemies (see out-of-shape gems).
►Droplet. Very rare gem type, dropped by Winter Lanterns. Despite its naturally lower attack rates, it is the only gem type that can fit in all the weapon slots.

  • We will see in part 2 how a gem's shape is determined.

Part 2 - How the drop system works

2.1 - The Chalice Dungeons and their native effects
  • We are now getting into the part of gem farming that is slightly more obscure, but well-known to more expert players.

  • A fact of crucial importance for whoever farms gems is that the different Chalice types - Loran, Isz, Pthumeru and Hintertomb - each have native shapes, primary effects and secondary effects. This is information you should be aware of when you are looking at specific gem types.

  • The best gems you can find are farmed in Depth 5 Root Chalices with both Foetid and Cursed rites. I am going to ignore Hintertomb, as its depth does not allow both rites together.
ChaliceNative gem shapeNative primary effectsNative secondary effects
Pthumeru Radial Tempering/Phys scaling and others Add Phys damage and others
Loran Waning Fire, Bolt, Poison, Tempering and others Add Fire/Bolt damage, add Slow/Rapid Poison and others
Isz Triangular Physical, Arcane, Fire, Bolt and others Add Arcane damage, add Fire/Bolt and others

  • On rare occasions (chance: about 2%) you will get a drop that deviates from the preset values of the dungeon you are farming in.
►If you get a different shape, e.g. a Triangle gem in Pthumeru, that gem is called an out-of-shape drop.
►If you get a different primary effect, e.g. a Fire gem in Pthumeru, that gem is called an out-of-effect primary drop.
►If you get a different secondary effect, e.g. Add fire +15 as a secondary in Pthumeru, that gem is called an out-of-effect secondary drop.

2.2 Primary common effects and how they work, Secondary effects
  • The primary effects of gems are many. In this guide, we won't look into all the singular effects that exist. We will, instead, see the general categories and how the drop system works.

  • The most common and wanted effects can be sorted by the stat they scale with. (The effects with a strike-through are complete garbage.)
►Scaling with Strength: Tempering, Heavy.
►Scaling with Skill: Tempering, Sharp.
►Scaling with Arcane: Arcane, Fire, Bolt, Cold.
►Scaling with Bloodtinge: Damp Bloodtinge, Warm.
  • There is an ulterior difference between how gems can present their primaries.
►Percentage primary effects: Add a certain percentage, such as 27.2%, of damage. The percentage scales with your corresponding stat and Tempering, Fire, Bolt, Arcane, Murky etc.
►Flat primary effects: These gems, distinguished in general by the word Odd in their name, add a flat amount of damage points per hit, but do not scale with anything. They are useful for certain multi-hit weapons, such as the Kos Parasite, the Logarius Wheel and the Whirligig Saw, and are extremely useful for low-level builds.
►Scaling effects: Scaling gems do nothing but boost the scaling of a certain stat on your weapon. They are the four I mentioned in the previous list: Heavy, Sharp, Cold and Warm respectively. Heavy and Cold are essential for their respective builds, whereas Sharp and Warm are completely useless.

  • Secondary effects are, in most cases, a spin on Primaries. They can be both percentage or flat. Secondary effect gems are dropped by most mobs and some bosses, such as Watchdog, Amygdala, Ebrietas.

  • For more detailed info on effects: Individual Blood Gems

2.3 - Curses
  • Curses only appear on gems obtained from Cursed chalices or Winter Lanterns. A gem can only bear a single curse at a time, which is randomly selected from the following six:
►Increase Stamina costs: The most desirable PvE curse. The stamina increase is so low that it is virtually unnoticeable.
►Durability down: No damage to the gem attack ratio, but massively annoying in terms of durability reduction.
►Atk versus Kin down: The second most desirable PvE curse, as the game only has a total of four Kin type enemies. Most desirable for PvP.
►Atk versus Beasts down: Massively annoying curse for PvE, since beast enemies are everywhere. Most desirable for PvP.
►HP depletes: Difficult curse to deal with at lower VIT amounts, but not unbearable in PvE. The health drain is very small. Not recommended at all for PvP.
►ATK down: The worst curse of all, it makes the gem worse than non-cursed ones, effectively rendering the drop useless. Nobody understands why it even exists.

Part 3 - Out-of-shape (OOS) Gems and Out-of-effect (OOE) Gems

  • Now that we know everything about gems, there are a couple more things we should know about the process of farming them. More specifically: what effects and shapes do we want? What is the relevance of OOS and OOE gems? How do I get the gems I want?

3.1 - The drop tables
  • From the knowledge and experience the community has collected of the game, it is currently hypothesized that, when a gem drops, the game throws a dice roll to decide what effect it will have. The dice roll can draw from three different lists of effects:
►The drop table of the specific boss or enemy you are farming. Failed that,
►The drop table of the dungeon type (Pthumeru, Isz etc.). Failed that,
►A general OOE drop table that is common to all dungeons.

  • On top of this, there is a 2% chance of an OOS gem every time. As you see, the OOE/OOS chance is very low.

When to farm OOS
  • From the information I gave you, it should already be obvious that the gem setups you want depend on your stats, and the correspondent Primaries should be looked for in specific chalices. If you are an Arcane build, for example, you want to delve into Isz or Loran, and will use Triangle/Waning slots. If you are a Strength build, you will mainly farm in Pthumeru. And so on.
  • The thing is, our usage of gems is limited by the weapon imprints, because not all effects drop in all shapes naturally. For the best weapon setups, in some cases, we may have to farm OOS/OOE gems.

  • Fire Radials, for example, will be very rarely drop from Watchers in Pthumeru, as an out of effect drop. If you get a Fire Radial from Watchers in Isz, it won't be out of effect, but out of shape.

  • Alternatively: Amygdala, the boss that drops the best Nourishing gems, is strangely not found Pthumeru Ihyll, making the Nourishing Radial gem a highly desirable (but rare) out-of-shape drop.

  • A classic example of this case are Bloodtinge gems. Bloodtinge and Warm gems are set to only drop in circular shape, and they make up the entire drop table of just four (4) enemies in the game. They have also been known to drop fromthe Watcher boss in extremely rare cases, just a few times ever.

  • However, Bloodtinge gems also have the same chance as all the other gems to drop out of shape. Therefore, despite the abysmal drop rate, Bloodtinge OOS gems are highly sought after, and farmed by many due to their very high attack values.

  • It is up to you whether you want to farm OOS/OOE or not. Generally, it is not necessary. It does remain the only way to obtain certain optimal setups.

Part 4 - Discovery

  • There is a final note that gem farmers should be aware of, and it is how the Discovery stat affects your farming.

  • Whether they should wear Eye runes or not while farming is a dilemma for many Hunters out there. The answer is, it depends. Let's see how.

  • What Discovery DOES NOT affect:
►The rating and attack value of the gem.
►The chance to get specific gem effects. The drop tables for Primaries and secondaries alike are NOT altered by Eye runes.
►The curse of the gem.
►In boss farming, the chance of a gem drop, as it is always guaranteed.
►The chance of OOS and OOE drops.

  • What Discovery DOES affect:
►In mob farming, the chance of a gem drop. Higher Discovery boosts the chance of gem drops in a mob enemy that has a drop table with other items as well, like Blood Vials and Bullets.
►In boss farming, the drop rate of Blood Stones, Chunks and Blood Rocks.
  • Unverified effect of Discovery:
►The change to Single/Twin Bloodstone Shard and Chunk/Rock ratio. Likely answer is that, just like gem effects, it increases the chance of both and the ratio remains the same.

  • When to BOOST Discovery:
►In boss farming, when you are farming for upgrade materials as well.
►In mob farming, at all times.

  • When NOT TO BOOST Discovery:
►In mob farming, never.

Blood Gems Terminology

  • There are a lot of words that go into it — cursed, odd, abyssal, warm, nourishing, arcane. And then there are numbers at the end? But there’s also a different number listed when you look in your inventory? Gem terminology can be confusing. Let’s try to break it down. If the naming of blood gems is something you’ve wondered about, by the time you’re done with this primer hopefully you’ll be able to decode every part of a gem’s name. Read More

Gem Shapes and Alternate Weapons

  • Right-hand weapons can have up to three gem slots, and some left-hand weapons have one slot. There are different slot shapes, though; not every gem will fit every slot. The slot types are: Radial, Triangular, Waning, and Circle. Your gem's shape needs to match the slot you want to use it in. If you find a really great gem but the shape doesn't properly match your weapon, don't give up hope. There are actually two alternate versions of every right-hand weapon - the Lost and Uncanny versions. They're identical to normal weapons except that they have different slot configurations. These alternate weapons can be found in Chalice Dungeons. There is also an exceedingly rare fifth type of gem shape - Droplet gems. These are "almighty" gems; they can fit in any type of gem slot!
  • List of best version of each weapon to maximize Physical damage can be found here.
  • Weapon variant considerations: Due to most gems being available in only specific shape, picking up a variant with correct slots can save your upgrade materials and time for farming out-of-shape gems. Generally it depends on the setup you’re going to make.
  • Physical damage setups (tempering, fools, poormans, striking): always pick up a weapon with radial-radial-triangle slot combination. Waning slots should be avoided since best physical gems never have waning as their native shape which means you will have to settle with weaker gems. Note that starting saw cleaver and saw spear have radial-radial-waning slots so you would want to replace them with uncanny variants as soon as you gain access to chalice dungeons. The only reason to use a weapon with a waning slot is if you’re going to use three labyrinth madman gems, in this case pick up radial-radial-waning weapon variant.
  • Elemental conversion (arcane builds): here best setups are different depending on which element are you using and if you have access to edited dungeons. Fire and Bolt converted weapons require a waning slot for corresponding elemental abyssal gem; two remaining slots are filled with cold abyssals. If you have access to edited glyphs it is highly recommended to grab a variant with radial-radial-waning slots because edited Pthumeru chalices feature Pthumerian Elder in an oil pool arena which makes farming him on arcane build much easier. Without access to edited glyphs, it is recommended to pick up a lost variant (radial-triangle-waning slots): since Ihyll secondaries are useless on elemental weapons, getting a cold abyssal from Isz which has better drop rate for elemental secondaries will increase your weapon AR in a bit. Arcane conversion requires a triangle slot for Arcane Abyssal; two remaining slots don’t matter if you don’t have access to edited dungeons since neither Pthumeru nor Loran drop arcane secondaries and you will have to settle with some random secondaries. With edited dungeons, picking a radial-radial-triangle variant is advised for easier farm.
  • Kos Parasite has its own separate gem considerations: generally it wants a triangle slot for an arcane abyssal; filling remaining slots is difficult without edited dungeon access and usually done with gems dropped by npc hunters from Isz (either radials from bone ash hunter or waning from queen killer). Alternatively, brainsucker gems can be used with uncanny variant to maximize L2 explosion attack damage. Edited dungeons provide access to labyrinth madman arc+flat arc gems which can work with normal variant or lost variant (when paired with arcane abyssal).
  • Elemental conversion (low BL twinks/mules): with only base investments offensive stats, you will mostly rely on flat AR increase bonuses. The highest flat bonuses come as +arc secondaries from gems dropped by brainsuckers which appear in Isz and Pthumeru; for their gems pick up a weapon with radial-radial-triangle slots. Another option with high flat bonus comes from Loran Cleric gems which have high flat Fire secondary. Unfortunately this enemy only appears in Loran, so you’ll have to farm out-of-shape gems if you want full setup; in this case it is recommended to farm them first and then use whichever variant they are fitting in.
  • Nourishing setups (strength/arcane or skill/arcane builds): weapons with split damage benefit from Nourishing abyssals from Amygdala. Unfortunately this boss isn’t found in Pthumeru Ihyll which severely limits options for radial nourishing gems; for this reason, picking Lost variant is advisable since it only has one radial slot. If you are fine with slightly weaker options, gargoyles are the easiest source of radial nourishing gems. Alternatively, with access to edited dungeons, nourishing/fools nourishing gems from Labyrinth Madman can be used; these gems require a radial-radial-waning variant. Nourishing gems from Merciless Watchers boss are another possibility for which you want to use a radial-radial-triangle variant, but along with nourishing Madman gems, these are very rare, so be prepared to spend a long time farming. The last unique case is Logarius’ wheel which benefits from nourishing brainsucker gems; pick an uncanny variant for such setup.
  • Poison setups (dirty/murky): without access to edited glyphs, poison gems in radial shape are mostly limited to purple aura scorpions (dirty) and rats/dogs/spiders (murky) from Pthumeru dungeons. Alternatively, bone ash hunters in Loran an Isz can be farmed for a low chance to drop these; loran has slightly better chances. Thus, radial-radial-waning variant is advisable. Access to edited dungeons allows you to farm Merciless Watchers with hintertomb gem pool for top-tier poison gems, which require radial-radial-triangle variant.
  • Bloodtinge setups: since the only natural shape for bloodtinge gems is circle, you will have to farm a set of out-of-shape gems which will dictate your eventual weapon variant choice. For Chikage, you can grab a Lost variant and use a bloodtinge circle and two tempering radials before you farm a set of bloodtinge gems.

Buffable and Non-buffable Weapons

  • There are two types of weapons in Bloodborne: weapons that can be buffed (strengthened) with Fire Paper, Bolt Paper, or Empty Phantasm Shell, and those that cannot. Usually, weapons that can be buffed only deal physical damage; the lone exception is the Reiterpallasch. Weapons that cannot be buffed always have more than one damage type.

  • This is an important distinction because some gems work differently depending on the type of weapon in which they are placed. Refer to the following lists when you need a reminder about which category a weapon is in:
Buffable Weapons:
  • Saw Cleaver
  • Saw Spear
  • Hunter Axe
  • Threaded Cane
  • Kirkhammer
  • Ludwig's Holy Blade
  • Stake Driver
  • Beast Claw
  • Reiterpallasch

  • Holy Moonlight Sword

Unique Gems

  • Most Blood Gems are randomly generated when they appear, but there are some preset gems, and even a rare few that you create by using unique items you may acquire. These few unique gems are covered here.
Icon Name Shape Rating Effects Availability
Gold Blood Gem Gold Blood Gem Radial 7 ATK vs beasts UP +12.6% This gem is acquired by defeating Vicar Amelia and then using the Gold Pendant she drops. It's a Radial gem that grants a decent boost to attack strength against beasts. The Saw Cleaver and Saw Spear are good candidates for fortifying with this gem, because they both have Radial slots and their serrated damage bonus already makes them your ideal beast-killers.
Tear Blood Gem Tear Blood Gem Droplet 8 HP continues to recover +2 You can obtain this gem by giving the Doll the Small Hair Ornament and then talking to her. She'll give you the Tear Stone, which produces this gem when you use it. It's a very useful gem, and worth equipping to your sidearm if it has a gem slot, at least until late in the game when you begin to find powerful Circle-shaped Blood Gems.
Red Blood Gem Red Blood Gem Droplet 4 Physical ATK UP +2.7%
Boosts rally potential +1.8%
This unique, Droplet-shaped Blood Gem is acquired by using the Red Brooch, which you can find on a woman's corpse in the Tomb of Oedon. It raises your physical attack by 2.7% and boosts rally potential by 1.8%. This makes it similar to a Lethal gem, and not a very strong one at that, but it still highly useful in the first half of the game.

Positive Effects and Cursed Gems

  • Gems are, to a certain extent, random. Behind the scenes, each gem has a budget of points. Every positive effect that is added to a gem takes points from the budget, and every negative effect adds points back. What this means is that gems with negative effects can also have stronger positive effects. These are known as "Cursed" gems; they're powerful but have a downside. For example, let's consider a gem with a rating of 10 with an Odd Bloodtinge effect. Let's say the effect is "Blood Attack + 50." If it also had a negative Kinhunter effect of "Attack versus beasts down by 8.1 %," the positive Odd Bloodtinge could go higher; it might be something like "Blood Attack +62.6." If you put that gem on a Hunter Pistol, its attacks would be more powerful in general, but it would do less damage against beasts.
  • The key point to remember is that Cursed gems have negative effects and often have stronger positive effects to compensate. If you see something like a Cursed Dense effect (weapon durability down), it might actually be a blessing in disguise! The other important point is that not all gems are created equal. For example, a 19-rated Adept (Blunt) gem won't help you at all if you're using a Blade of Mercy, as it has no blunt attacks. Think carefully about which gems you choose, and don't hesitate to test them out on a variety of enemies!

Gem Effect Stacking

  • You can equip the same effect on a weapon multiple times, and the effects will stack. In fact, this is often the best way to use gems. You can make a weapon for use against beasts that stacks the Hunter effect multiple times, for example. You might be tempted to stack the gem effects of your left- and right- hand weapons, but this won't work in most cases. Effects generally only apply to the weapon you put them on rather than your character overall; an Odd Bloodtinge effect on your Saw Cleaver won't increase the damage of your Hunter Pistol, even if you hold them at the same time.
  • This even applies to effects like Fool that increase your damage at full HP. One major exception is the Pulsing effect that enables passive HP regeneration; it stacks! This makes it an amazing effect for a left-hand weapon...

Ratings

  • Gems can have up to three effects, and each gem has a rating that determines the strength of its effects. Higher-rated gems are stronger than lower-rated gems. The weakest gems have a rating of one, and the strongest gems have a rating of 20. You'll pick up some gems in the course of the main game, but if you want the most powerful gems you'll need to spend time in the Chalice Dungeons. Chalice Dungeons with a high Ritual Level are difficult, but they also have the best gems.
