In-Game Description

Trick weapon wielded by Gehrman, the first hunter.

A masterpiece that defined the entire array of weapons crafted at the workshop.
Its blade is forged with siderite, said to have fallen from the heavens.

Gehrman surely saw the hunt as a dirge of farewell, wishing only that his prey might rest in peace,
never again to awaken to another harrowing nightmare.

Overview

  • The Burial Blade requires 10 strength and 12 skill to use. Its physical damage increases mainly with skill; strength has a minimal effect. The Burial Blade also deals a small amount of arcane damage, which scales with your character's arcane stat. For characters with high skill who also want to use magic, the Burial Blade can be a powerful weapon. This is a very tricky weapon. In terms of speed and power, it's balanced, but its damage modifiers are a bit odd. The damage modifiers for dashing, rolling, and quickstepping attacks are all higher than average; the Burial Blade is designed around the concept of mobility and sneaky single strikes.

  • Normal Mode: The Burial Blade's normal mode is slightly faster than the transformed mode and uses less stamina, but it also has lower damage modifiers. As a result, it's more suited to long strings of attacks when compared to transformed mode. It's also useful in confined spaces where the transformed version would strike obstacles.

  • Transformed Mode: The transformed mode of the Burial Blade has better range and damage multipliers at the expense of more stamina usage. Walls and obstacles can stop most of the transformed mode attacks if you hit them, so make sure you have plenty of space in which to use it. It does have some attacks that work well in narrow hallways, though, so this isn't a major concern.

Gem Advice

  • The Burial Blade can't be buffed with Fire Paper or other buff items, so equipping it with an elemental gem does not convert its physical damage to the elemental. As a result, it is not a good candidate for elemental gem effects. Since it does two types of damage from the beginning, consider using the Nourishing gem effect instead of the Tempering effect, as Tempering will only increase your physical damage, but not your arcane damage. The Burial Blade is well-suited to single attacks, particularly rolling and quickstepping attacks. If you are using invincibility frames to dodge enemy attacks and then attacking with rolling attacks, you will land a lot of counterhits. The Finestrike gem effect synergizes perfectly with this playstyle. Maximum rank Finestrike effects are rivaled in power only by the best Poorman effects but are much safer to use, as your HP does not need to be low. For more information check the Best Blood Gem Setups page.

Key Attacks

  • Normal Mode: The Burial Blade's normal mode rolling and frontstep R1s are some of the best quick attacks in the game. These moves tend to be fast for all weapons, but they also tend to have multipliers less than 1.0. For the Burial Blade, they're even more powerful than normal R1 attacks!

The dashing R2 is a very strong attack for this weapon. It's considerably more powerful than a normal R2. The trick is hitting with it; it has a narrow hit box, so you need to aim properly if you use it while not locked-on. Against large opponents, this is not a big problem, but if you are having trouble hitting the enemy consistently, just use the dashing R1 instead, as it has a wider hit box. The transformation attack has a good damage multiplier, but it doesn't combo particularly well.

On the topic of combos — while the Burial Blade isn't specialized in normal R1s, they still aren't bad. If you can hit your opponent with multiple R1 attacks in combination, you should do so. There's no need to rely only on the rolling, quickstepping, and dashing attacks; if you're safe to stand still and perform combos, do it! This advice is common to all of the weapons, but it's especially important to remember for weapons with specialized attacks, like the Burial Blade. It's very easy to over-rely on them and make things harder than they need to be. You may choose this weapon for its mobile strikes, but don't forget about your other options.

  • Transformed Mode: The charged R2 is one of the key techniques of the transformed Burial Blade. It is the weapon's hardest-hitting attack and has really impressive range. If you release R2 before the charge is finished, you'll perform the normal R2 as usual. The normal is a quick horizontal swipe that you can use to catch the enemy off-guard. Against a human opponent, it's a guessing game for them whether you will fully charge the R2 or let it go early.

The L2 chain of the transformed Burial Blade is also quite good. It strikes vertically, so it's safe to use in narrow spaces. It's also great for hitting enemy weak points, like the head of Vicar Amelia. Each hit does good super armor damage, as well, making it a useful attack against bosses and strong enemies.

The dashing, rolling, and quickstepping attacks of transformed mode are all very good, just as with normal mode. In transformed mode, though, they hit even harder and have better range! The dashing R2 is fast, powerful, consumes only a small amount of stamina, and can be used while remaining highly mobile. It has a narrow hit box, so it is easy to miss your target when not locked-on. If you are having trouble with it, you can either use the dashing R1 instead or use the dashing R2 while locked-on, though you'll need to be moving forward toward the enemy in order to engage your dash.

Durability

  • Durability of the weapon depletes when used. This means hitting an enemy, destructible object or bouncing off the walls. Hitting undestructible objects and environment does not deplete your durability. Style of an attack or upgrade of the weapon, even different weapon, does not matter - each count as one hit. Every 10th hit against the enemy/object depletes 1 durability. Exception is Tonitrus, which when in self buffed mode, depletes durability at rate of 2 hits. Hitting an enemy in dying animation still counts as hit. Also hitting multiple enemies/destructible objects at once counts as one hit per enemy - hitting 3 enemies at once counts as 3 hits towards durability counter. Shields lose 1 durability every 10th hit. Bounce means when your hit is bounced back off the wall or other objects. Every 5th bounce depletes 1 durability. Not every weapon can be bounced off, Burial Blade belongs into the category which can.

  • Damage reduction when heavily worn. When weapon is at 30% of total durability, it reaches the Risk state and AR is reduced by 30% and when it hits 0% of total durability, weapon is Broken, then AR is reduced by 50%. Burial Blade which has 200 points of durability reaches risk state at 60 Dur. Workshop's Repair: cost of repair depends on the weapon and its upgrade. For Burial Blade +0 it's 3 Blood Echoes per 1 point and for Burial Blade +10 it's 9 (values are rounded), full repair costs for +10 are 1800 Blood Echoes.

Attack: Attacks are named for the input command required to execute them.

Attack Damage Multipliers: Each attack has a different multiplier. Your attack's power is equal to the attack power of your weapon times this multiplier. Higher multipliers mean stronger attacks.

Type: Damage type determines which gems will boost your attack and which defense the enemy will use to reduce the damage. If multiple types are listed, the attack has two separate damage components that are calculated separately.

Stamina: Each attack costs a different amount of stamina. Numbers in parentheses indicate the cost of the additional action required to execute the attack. For example, a backstep attack requires a backstep, which costs 10 stamina.

Impact: When you hit an enemy, it will be stunned momentarily. Impact is an assessment of how heavy the stun will be. The scale is Light > Normal > Heavy > Massive. Attacks with Massive Impact often cause knockdowns.
