Keeper's Hunting Dog ❘ 番人の猟犬

Strong Enemy

Description

  • Keeper's Hunting Dogs are usually found in pairs alongside a Keeper of the Old Lords. Though they may appear quite menacing, their only truly dangerous attack is their arcing Flame Breath, which is used less often than their other attacks. They will use it when you stand in front of them and will move their heads to spread it across a wide area - this leaves openings for you to quickstep past it to the opposite direction their head is facing. They will move just as erratically as Rabid Dogs and attack with quick successions of bites, often using the Pouncing Bite when at a distance. Despite their size, they can be knocked over by your gunfire, much like Rabid Dogs, and because they appear in pairs, the Hunter's Blunderbuss' wide scattering shots are especially useful for handling these enemies.

Strategy

  • Lead Keeper's Hunting Dogs away from their master, if he's present, and try to pick them off separately. Since they are found in pairs, the far-reaching sweeps of the transformed Hunter Axe is great for hitting them when they are together. You can use the Hunter Blunderbuss to knock them over and quickstep forward to attack them as they are getting up; this is by far the most effective way of dealing with these enemies, as you can knock them out of any of their attacks, including their Flame Breath. They are also prone to the effects of Pungent Blood Cocktails, so if you have any you can use them to distract both dogs while you get some easy hits in. Once they're distracted, it can also be worthwhile using a Shaman Bone Blade on one of them to make it attack the other one, along with anything else in the area.

Notes

  • Preset Chalice Dungeons: Lower Pthumerian Labyrinth, Cursed Pthumerian Defilement, Lower Loran, Isz Gravestone
  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]

Attack Patterns

Flame Breath Yes Breathes fire in a wide arc ahead of it from side to side; quickstep through whichever side is open and attack their sides, or fall back to knock them over with gunfire.
Pouncing Bite Yes Fast and hard-to-avoid pouncing attack; quickstep to either side as soon as possible.

Blood Stones: Drop Pools

  • For the most part, items dropped by enemies are decided simply by a random percent chance from that enemy's own list of potential items. When an enemy appears in a dungeon, it sometimes has one or more of its drops determined by the dungeon's Depth, in order to give better rewards for more challenging dungeons. Such items are selected from a pool of similar items, and these pools are shown here. The upshot of this is that an enemy might drop a Blood Stone Shard in the Depth 1 Pthumerian Root Labyrinth, but would drop a Blood Stone Chunk instead in a Depth 5 Pthumeru Ihyll dungeon.
