Basic Information

When an enemy's attack hits, a portion of the HP gauge briefly turns orange, indicating the amount of damage inflicted. Attack the enemy before the orange bar disappear to restore a given amount of HP.
  • For a short period after taking damage, you have a chance to recover the health you lost. A small white marker will appear on your health bar to illustrate the amount of HP you can recover. After a short period, roughly two and a half seconds, the amount of HP that you can recover will begin to decrease until it is gone. Striking an enemy before this happens will allow you to Regain your lost health. The amount of HP recovered per hit varies by weapon and can be increased with gem effects.

  • The best way to Regain health is to roll or quickstep behind the enemy so that they have trouble hitting you; attack from that position. Always beware of quick spinning attacks and area-of-effect attacks. While it is true that you need to hurry if you want to utilize the Regain system, sometimes you need to simply fall back and use a Blood Vial. You have to find a balance, and the best method of healing will be determined by your enemy's power and aggressiveness. Against enemies that don't flinch when struck and attack quickly, Regain may be too risky; in those cases, use vials.

  • Regain is a key system in Bloodborne. Don't mistake its simplicity for a lack of importance. After being struck by an enemy attack, look for a chance to retaliate quickly to recover health.

Rally Immunity

  • Skeletal Puppet immune to rally from all damage types.
  • Pilgrim immune to rally from all damage types.
  • Evil Labyrinth Spirit immune to rally from all damage types.
  • Watchdog of the Old Lords immune to rally from fire damage type.
  • Abhorrent Beast immune to rally from bolt damage type.
  • Darkbeast Paarl immune to rally from bolt damage type.
  • The Doll immune to rally from all damage types.
Regain System

Notes

  • Loran Effect: There's aura that can appear on certain enemies exclusively in Loran dungeons. Enemies with such aura (red) will have Rally Effect and can regain health as you do [Regain System] - Video. This aura appears around labyrinth madmen, male beast patients and scourge beasts. Besides rally ability, these enemies have only 70% of their normal HP and always drop cursed gems. Rally aura scourge beast can also drop Beast Blood Pellets (5% drop rate at base Discovery).

Rally Value

  • Weapon's Rally: A lot of attacks multiply the rally number by their attack damage multiplier. Some of them are special-cased to have a different amount of rally. Rally number (in flat HP) can be raised by upgrading the weapon, as seen in the table below.

Weapon's Rally

  • When you take damage, you have a limited window of time to recover lost health. This is indicated by an orange bar which appears where your total health was previously. To recover lost health, you'll simply need attack to an enemy. You can utilize this system on enemies even after they have been killed, but only during their death animations. There are two terms for this system, which can be used interchangeably: regain and rally.

  • The numbers beside each weapon in the table correspond to how much health its attacks will recover with their full attack rating, both when un-upgraded and fully upgraded. The amount of health you will receive relies closely, but not exactly, on the specific damage multiplier of the attack.

  • The Hunter Axe will net you the highest amount of health recovered per hit across all upgrade levels. At higher levels, the Kirkhammer rivals this weapon, and its normal mode will be able to regain health faster due to its quick swing speeds. The Whirligig Saw regains equally as high, but where it shines is with the rapid shreds of the transformed mode, all of which count towards the regain system! Don't let the small numbers for weapons like the Blade of Mercy fool you - you'll be able to hit twice as fast as heavier weapons and regain similar or even greater amounts. Be aware however; ranged attacks such as gunfire won't count towards the regain system.
