Wandering Nightmare ❘ さまよう悪夢

Regular Enemy

Description

    A peculiar enemy that appears in many areas, but sometimes only under specific conditions. These creatures do not attack at all, but will instead flee the moment they spot you, and disappear if you fail to finish them quickly enough. Wandering Nightmares (outside Chalice Dungeons) are guaranteed to drop Bloodstones the first time you defeat them, but killing them repeatedly will yield no further loot.

Strategy

  • While harmless on their own, they are often positioned to lead you into ambushes or other dangerous situations if you pursue them blindly, so be sure to examine your surroundings carefully before approaching them.
  • In earlier areas, a single Molotov will kill them, and is often the best way to hit one if it runs out of leach. Throwing Knives are also well-suited to this task, but physical attacks will inflict little damage and repeated blows are necessary to get the job done. If you see a Wandering Nightmare before it sees you, examine the surrounding area carefully and check for possible ambushes in the direction you intend to chase it. If you're spotted before you have a chance to react, don't panic or run after it carelessly - these enemies will reappear the next time you enter the area, so you can always come back for it later if it gets away.

Notes

  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • Wandering Nightmare in Hemwick Charnel Lane has to be scared off, by breaking destructable objects like barrels, to drop down in the entrance room of Witch's Abode.
  • Wandering Nightmare in Upper Cathedral Ward will keep respawning upon revisting (reloading) the area but will give only blood echoes and no drop.

Wandering Nightmare
Pungent Blood Cocktails don't attract this enemy, making the item ineffective.
Shaman Bone Blades affect this enemy, making it hostile to other enemies.
