Undead Giant (Club and Hook) ❘ 死体の巨人

Boss

Description

    In-game Name (multi-language)
English: Undead Giant; Japanese: 死体の巨人; German: Untoter Riese; Spanish: Gigante No Muerto; French: Géant Mort-Vivant; Italian: Gigante Non Morto
    Internal Name
    Japanese: フレッシュゴーレム; Translation: Flesh Golem
Undead Giant, resident within Chalice Dungeons. Met on multiple occasions this particular kind has giant club and hook as his hands. Undead Giants are animated mounds of flesh akin to the Cramped Caskets, rather than their own being. They have stitching visible all over their body, where the pieces they're made up of separate.

Preparation

  • Bring a strong weapon with heavy-hitting attacks like Ludwig's Holy Blade or the Kirkhammer, or take advantage of its weakness to thrust attacks with a Saw Spear or Rifle Spear. Alternatively, a Chikage set with rapid poison gems will be very effective in its transformed state. If you choose a weapon that can receive augmentations from items, bring some Bolt Paper; also consider bringing the Tiny Tonitrus if you have it Poison Knives are optional but can be used with almost no risk; other thrown weapons will deal very little damage and aren't generally worth using. The Cannon is useful but not necessary; it will deal heavy damage when used with Bone Marrow Ash and since the boss cannot be interrupted, you won't have many other uses for your ammunition during this battle.

Overview

  • This Undead Giant variant uses only a few basic attacks consisting mainly of horizontal slashes with its hook and vertical slams with its club. It moves extremely slowly during both phases of the fight, and will hold its attacks until it's extremely close to you in order to prevent you from escaping. Beware that it can use the weighted chains hanging from its back as whips, and will do so if you stand behind or beside it for too long; it will also kick you if you stand in front of it at point blank range. It has several weak points including its head, its legs and a large lump of flesh on its right hip; all of these spots can be targeted for extra damage or additional effects. You can also quickstep forward through its legs in order to escape its frontal attacks. During Phase 1 it will use only slow melee attacks and combos, and will occasionally throw in a grab attack.
  • During Phase 2 it will begin using a much more dangerous chain whip attack with longer reach and will increase the speed of its club combos; it'll also begin using a slam attack that strikes a small spherical area around its body with a damaging Shockwave.
  • Main type of damage dealt by Undead Giant (Club and Hook) is Physical, Blunt. Hook attacks are physical, club and chain attacks are Blunt. More information about main damage types for all bosses are on Boss Damage Types wiki page.

Strategy

  • Aim for the boss' legs - injuring them will stagger it and allow you to perform a frontal visceral attack, or a Bone Marrow Ash Cannon shot if you're using the necessary equipment. Destroying the lump of flesh on its right hip will instantly deplete 25% of its health, but try to avoid doing so until just before its hit points drop below half; this will minimize the time you have to spend dealing with its deadlier Phase 2 attacks.
  • Striking its head with vertical swings such as the transformed L2 attacks of Ludwig's Holy Blade will eventually cause it to stumble, setting it up for a longer combo; it will also walk straight into carefully-timed charge attacks such as those of the transformed Holy Blade and Hunter Axe. If you need to heal, simply quickstep backward three to four times before using your Blood Vials - the boss has no way of closing the distance quickly enough to stop you from doing so.

Environment

  • The arena is a large rectangular cavern with no obstacles or terrain differences. While the area is open and unobstructed, it's still very easy to be backed into a corner or against a wall due to your opponent's size and sweeping attacks, so pay constant attention to your position and try to use the full length of the room to maintain enough space to evade.

Notes

  • Preset Chalice Dungeons: Lower Pthumerian Labyrinth (boss)
  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • Undead Giant (Club and Hook) has lump below his bottom which can be broken as its weak point.
  • During Undead Giant (Club and Hook) grab attack animation, damage can NOT be reduced by repeatedly pressing buttons (mashing).

Cooperation & Boss' HP

  • Having a summoned ally doesn't alter the health or difficulty of the enemies you'll fight, but it does affect the bosses. To ensure they are still a challenge, boss health is increased to 1.5x when a second co-op player enters your world, and to 2.0x when a third enters.
Recommended weapon: Kirk Hammer or Saw Cleaver, buffed with Bolt Paper

Stepping into this fight, you'll immediately notice that the boss room is roughly rectangular, it is recommended that you stay as close to the middle of this arena as you can to avoid backing yourself up against a wall. Make sure that you have plenty of room behind you at all times for dodging backwards, the Undead Giant's Spinning Chains attacks are very hard to dash through using invincibility frames due to the amount of space that these attacks cover, so you'll want to give yourself room to be completely clear of those chains when the situation calls for it.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, lets get on with the fight. Using this strategy, you will spend 80-90% of the fight behind the boss, the only thing he can do to you when you are behind him is his Spinning Chains attacks and these are highly telegraphed. Approach the boss from the right side, when you get close he'll likely perform his Hook Swipe, dash through it by utilizing your invincibility frames, now you will be behind the boss where you will notice a grotesque growth on the lower right of his back, ignore this for now and attack his left side, hit him once or twice and he will perform his Spinning Chains attack which is telegraphed when he lifts his club-arm up to his chest and twists his body slightly, when he does this, utilize the space behind you and dash backwards, once he has finished the animation, dash behind him again and continue attacking his left side, rinse and repeat until his health is down to 50% or less.

Now that his health is getting low, continue on with the previous strategy, only this time, attack the growth on the right side of his back, this will burst and stun him after two or three hits, causing high damage. While he is stunned, get two or three hits on him and he should be close to death, now back away to avoid whatever wake-up attack he tries to surprise you with and then dash back behind him, a few more hits and the fight should be over.

Injuring his left and right legs will knock him to his knees where you can follow up with a frontal visceral attack.

Undead Giant Weak Points

  • In Total and Part HP columns you will find value of the base HP without area multiplier. In Bloodborne each entity has own base HP (and NG) value which is then multiplied by the area (or part of the area) multiplier in which enemy or boss is in.
  • In the HP Percentage column you will find value of how much damage you need to deal to that body part to break it in percentage of total boss HP.
  • Enemies and Bosses can have multiple weak points which some are breakable (listed with multipliers) and take higher damage while broken while some will have only higher damage multipler the whole time (mainly listed in the notes section).
Body Part Total HP Part HP HP [%] Damage X Damage X

Arm 1800 170 9.44% 1 1.50
Leg 1800 220 12.22% 1 1.50
Undead Giant (Club and Hook) | Chalice Dungeons Roaming Boss & Enemy
Head 540 100 18.52% 1 1.50
Arm 540 170 31.48% 1 1.50
Leg 540 220 40.74% 1 1.50
  • Notes: Club and Hook Variant: It has several weak points including its head, its legs and a large lump of flesh on its right hip; all of these spots can be targeted for extra damage or additional effects.

Attack Patterns Phase One

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Beatdown Combo No Up to five slow hits, usually vertical club smashes but sometimes ends with a horizontal hook slash; strafe or quickstep backward, or quickstep forward.
Fishhook Grab No Close-range grab attack; quickstep backward once or twice.
Spinning Flail No 360-degree spin attack with very fast startup, used if you attack from behind; quickstep backward when it starts.
Front Kick No Single forward kick with fast startup, used with either foot; quickstep sideways or backward.
Hook Swipe No Horizontal rightward hook swipe that can be followed with a second vertical slash of the hook in the opposite direction.
  • Phase 1 Strategy: Wait for the Undead Giant to use one of its slow melee attacks or combos, then quickstep forward through the swing and strike its legs. When it staggers, circle in front of it to perform a visceral attack or simply hit it with a Bone Marrow Ash Cannon blast; when you've injured one of its legs, switch sides and begin focusing your attacks on the other to stagger it again It will eventually repair the limb damage, identifiable by a swirling red particle effect around the area being healed, at which point you can re-injure the limb to stagger the giant yet again. Don't get greedy with R1 combos, though - attacking more than once before quickstepping away places you at risk of being hit with a Spinning Flail Wait until the boss' health is just over 50%, then destroy the lump of flesh on its right hip to instantly cut that amount in half and begin Phase 2.

Attack Patterns Phase Two

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Shockwave Slam No Spherical area attack centered on itself. Slow and obvious windup; quickstep backward.
Chain Cyclone No Horizontal slash followed by 360-degree trailing attacks from the chains attached to his back. Slow windup but long reach; quickstep backward.
Pulverizer Combo No Up to five fast slams with its club, sometimes ending with a hook slash instead; can hit you repeatedly on the ground. Strafe or quickstep backward.
  • Phase 2 Strategy: The second phase begins when the Undead Giant's health drops below 50%, and although it won't move any faster, it will fight more aggressively and make frequent use of its Chain Cyclone attack. Beware that it can perform both clockwise and counterclockwise versions of this move, and will try to catch you off guard by alternating them. Regardless of which version it uses, the best way to avoid them is to quickstep backward once or twice. This is the best time to use your Poison Knives; eight to nine will inflict poison on the boss, allowing you to do so twice with a full load of 20, and if you back well away before using them the boss will be completely unable to evade. Continue focusing your melee attacks on its legs to stagger it, and if both legs are injured, fall back and let it repair them so you can injure them again; you can still evade all of its attacks by quickstepping forward through them, but if you're at mid range or farther, you're often better off just quickstepping away.

Blood Stones: Drop Pools

  • For the most part, items dropped by enemies are decided simply by a random percent chance from that enemy's own list of potential items. When an enemy appears in a dungeon, it sometimes has one or more of its drops determined by the dungeon's Depth, in order to give better rewards for more challenging dungeons. Such items are selected from a pool of similar items, and these pools are shown here. The upshot of this is that an enemy might drop a Blood Stone Shard in the Depth 1 Pthumerian Root Labyrinth, but would drop a Blood Stone Chunk instead in a Depth 5 Pthumeru Ihyll dungeon.

Base Level: Blood Echoes, HP, Damage and Def. Multipliers

  • For enemies that also appear (or exclusively appear) in dungeons, their stats will be shown at the base level, because their exact stats at any given point are calculated from these base values. The basic formula is: Total Value = Base x A x B x C x D. Multipliers written down below were datamined directly from the game files. Multiplier A represents depth (1 - 5) of the chalice dungeon; multiplier B is layer (1 - 4) of the specific chalice dungeon; multiplier C is used when dungeon is Pthumeru Ihyll; multiplier D is for calculating blood echoes when additional curse rite is used.
