Rabid Dog ❘ 狂犬

Regular Enemy

Description

  • Fast, agile attack dogs usually found in the company of Huntsman enemies, but also sometimes locked in cages and unable to attack. Beware that if you wait too long before attacking caged Rabid Dogs, they may eventually break out of their kennels and attack. They move quickly and are highly evasive, dashing in to perform lunging bites and immediately leaping backward to avoid your counterattack. They can be extremely dangerous in groups due to their swift movement, but their low health and weakness to fire make them easy prey if you can manage to land an attack; they also suffer additional damage from serrated weapons, such as the Saw Cleaver and the Saw Spear. A later version of this foe sports the head of a Carrion Crow [Image], but behaves exactly the same as its purebred cousins.

Strategy

  • If possible, try to eliminate them with thrown items or ranged attacks before they detect you - Molotovs and Throwing Knives are very effective due to their low health, but are very likely to miss during battle due to these foes' agility and quick evasive responses. If they see you at a distance, time a thrust attack to hit them as they leap at you; shooting them with a pistol or scattergun will knock them to the ground, canceling their attack and giving you an opportunity to hit them as they get back up. Try not to let them get near you as they turn quickly, making it difficult to avoid their bite attacks at close range.

Variants

Basic variant found throughout Yharnam. Variant summoned by Bell Ringer in Yahar'gul. Variant with Crow Head found in Nightmare of Mensis.

Notes

  • Preset Chalice Dungeons: Central Pthumerian Labyrinth, Hintertomb, Lower Pthumerian Labyrinth, Pthumeru Ihyll
  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • Variants with purple aura have different drop pool and rates from regular version.
  • In Central Yharnam dogs in cage, 38 Blood Echoes and no drops
  • Rabid Dog in area surrounding Lower Chapel in Cathedral Ward have different HP and Blood Echoes pool (141/184) than rest of the area (172/834).
  • Theory on the Yharnam dogs, when the curse started, beasts were relatively humanoids and therefore Doberman (Old Hunter's Hound) were used. However, as beasts became more animalistic, somewhere along the lines they must have scrapped the doberman for the larger Irish Wolf Hound (Rabid Dog), a dog specifically bred for hunting and killing wolves and bears.

Shaman Bone Blades affect this enemy, making it hostile to other enemies.

Attack Patterns

All Attacks Interrupt Notes
Leaping Bite No Usually the initial attack to close the distance. Quickstep right, left or dodge forward through it to get behind them.
Bite No Single bite between other attacks, all combos starts exactly the same so do not wait for more. Quickstep right, left or dodge forward through it to get behind them.
Double Bite No 2 consecutive bite attacks to get you staggered. Quickstep right, left or dodge forward through it to get behind them.
Bite Combo No 3 fast consecutive bite attacks when stading close. Quickstep right, left or dodge forward through it to get behind them.
Note: You cannot parry but each bullet from firearm has instant knowckdown effect. After each finished attack Rabid Dog has longer recovery animation (head shake), which is time to punish them.
