Key Item

In Game Description

A cloth emblem that belonged to the captain of the Church
hunters long ago. Opens the main gate that leads to the
round plaza of the Great Cathedral.

The main gate is shut tight on nights of the hunt, and could

  • An important choice regarding how you want to proceed needs to be made, and it will have a significant impact on the order in which you encounter other areas. The Plaza Gate near the middle of the Cathedral Ward is locked, and the only ways to open it are by operating the switch on the other side, or buying the Hunter Chief Emblem from the Bath Messengers for 10,000 Blood Echoes.

  • To reach the other side of the gate without parting with your Blood Echoes, you'll have to go to the Lower Chapel in the Cathedral Ward to access Old Yharnam and defeat the boss Blood-starved Beast there - that will cause the side door in the Oedon Chapel to open, allowing you to enter the Healing Church Workshop. At the end of that area you can drop down to the other side of the Oedon Chapel Gate, giving you access to the rest of the Cathedral Ward.

  • If you buy the Emblem, you can interact with the gate to open it. This gives you the option to explore all of Cathedral Ward, and even head straight to Hemwick Charnel Lane. Old Yharnam is less challenging, though, and worth heading there first for the treasures it holds (chief among them a Holy Chalice), so that's the recommended route.

  • Keep in mind that until you open the Main Gate to Cathedral Plaza by either Hunter Chief Emblem or the lever you can not summon any cooperators in Cathedral Ward. Also Eileen the Crow will not appear outside of Oedon Chapel until you make Cathedral Plaza accessible.

Availability

  • Sold by: Bath Messengers [Hunter's Dream], this cloth talisman will become available for purchase at the shop in the Hunter's Dream when you obtain the Sword Hunter Badge.
  • Sword Hunter Badge: You'll acquire the Sword Hunter Badge after defeating the Cleric Beast in Central Yharnam. It adds several useful items to the shop, including Antidotes; they will come in very handy in Old Yharnam, so you might want to face Cleric Beast before you challenge the old city.

Notes

  • Upon starting New Game+ all of the Key Items (except for Badges, Blood Gem Workshop Tool, Rune Workshop Tool, Short Ritual Root Chalice, Workshop Haze Extractor and Yharnam Stone) you acquired on your previous playthrough will be stripped away and you'll need to collect them again.
  • In further new game cycles (NG+ and onward) you can buy Hunter Chief Emblem from the beginning of the game, since Sword Hunter Badge stays in your inventory when you start new game cycle.
  • Detailed texture for Hunter Chief Emblem was datamined and can be further investigated.
