Rom, the Vacuous Spider ❘ 白痴の蜘蛛、ロマ

Boss

Description

    In-game Name (multi-language)
English: Rom, the Vacuous Spider; Japanese: 白痴の蜘蛛、ロマ; German: Rom, die geistlose Spinne; Spanish: Rom, la Araña Vacua; French: Rom, l'Araignée Stupide; Italian: Rom, il Ragno Ottuso
    Internal Name
    Japanese: 白痴の蜘蛛; Translation: Idiot Spider
Though the school is now long-abandoned and access is restricted by the Healing Church, Master Willem can still be found there overlooking the lake that hides Vacuous Rom.
  • Carrying a huge massive body with tiny spider legs. Body covered with growing mold that have a up lighting glow in it. Not also does it's body seem to be made out of stone, it's head also is covered in a thick rocky coat. Little eyes with no life in them peek out of holes that are carved into the rock that is it's head. The mouth seems rather not terrifying, still oddly formed like a circle covered with sharp little teeth. Rom doesn't seem to be that frightening in combat but never underestimate her power. She might surprise you.

Preparation

  • Stock up on Bolt Paper, Quicksilver Bullets and Blood Vials. Shaman Bone Blades can be helpful during the second and third Phases if you have access to them; Molotovs and Throwing Knives are only marginally useful. If you've obtained and upgraded the Tonitrus from Yahar'gul, bring it along as it's extremely effective; also consider bringing a weapon with sweeping horizontal swings such as the Hunter Axe or Ludwig's Holy Blade for dealing with the small spiders.

Overview

  • Rom will not be hostile the first time you enter the boss area, so you can take your time getting prepared. During the first Phase she won't attack you at all and you'll only have to deal with the small spiders; during the second, she'll summon another group of spiders and begin using her magic attacks. When you're close to Rom, she'll use a large spherical magic blast to drive you away; at mid range she'll perform a much wider area attack that causes boulders of ice to rise from the lake beneath you; and if you're outside the range of those spells she'll rain ice boulders down on you from above. Rom will summon a final group of spiders at the beginning of Phase 3 and will begin using a flailing thrash attack if you stand close to her for too long, but will otherwise continue to use her spells in the same manner as during Phase 2. For their part, the spiders are only a threat when they're close to you; if you draw Rom far enough away from them, they'll forget about you and begin aimlessly wandering the area.
  • Main type of damage dealt by Rom, the Vacuous Spider is Physical, Blunt, Arcane. Rom’s body slams deal Blunt damage. Falling meteors are 40% phys/60% arc. Rising ones are 20% phys/80% arc, dealing significantly more damage. Small spiders deal only Physical damage. More information about main damage types for all bosses are on Boss Damage Types wiki page.

Strategy

  • Rom and her children are very weak against lightning, so use the Tonitrus or power up other weapons with Bolt Paper to inflict the most possible damage. Both Rom and the small spiders take drastically reduced damage from attacks to their heads, so you'll have to quickstep beside or behind them in order to reach their weak points. Weapons with wide horizontal attacks are well-suited to dealing with the small spiders and can eliminate several at once, especially when augmented with Bolt Paper. While fighting Rom, focus on attacking only one of her sides - these spots can be injured with repeated attacks, after which point they'll take additional damage when hit.
  • Upon entering the Moonside Lake for the first time you will see Rom laying on the lake by herself. She is not hostile until you start attacking her, as soon as you start hitting her, she will start moving away from you slowly and summons around 10 Children of Rom. If you enter the boss area, Moonside Lake, after you failed in the boss fight, Rom will start summoning her children as soon as you drop on the Lake. Since Rom doesn't attack you in this Phase you can and should focus on killing those Children of Rom. They are easily killed by hitting them from the sides. Be careful though since those Children inflict a lot of damage if one or more hit you at once, so remember to not get greedy here. As soon as you killed all children you should start focusing on Rom herself. To maximize the damage on her you should equip Bolt Paper.
  • Rom is gonna teleport away from you as soon as you bring her under 75% of her HP. To maximize the damage on her before she teleports away you should have a full Stamina bar and try to get her down to 80%, then wait for your stamina to recharge and continue to hit her until she teleports away. Rom should be now a good distance away from you and she will summon the next wave of her children. In this Phase now, Rom herself will start attacking you. She has only one long-range move that she will contentiously use until you are close enough to her. That move is called Meteor Barrage, where she summons around 6-7 meteors from the sky that will drop down on you. To avoid them you should look up into the sky to see where they are landing so you can adjust your dodge to it. Quickstepping works the best for that , but can only be done if there are enemies nearby. If you get closer to Rom she will start using close-range moves, such as her Magic Blast and Rising Meteors, two very similar moves when it comes to dodging. Quickstep backwards a few times to be out of range. Now you should again focus on killing those Spiders before attacking Rom herself. This time you need to watch out for Rom's attacks as well though. The safest way to kill the spider children and avoid getting hit by Rom is to kill the spiders one by one and keep an eye on Rom after each Child of Rom killed. That way you can dodge her potential attacks in time. As soon as all children are dead focus on hitting Rom. Remember that she will attack back now, so only land a few hits, back off and hit her again.
  • When she starts teleporting (50% HP) you should get as much hits on Rom as possible to bring her as low as possible for the third and last phase. Now after Rom teleported she will summon the last wave of her children. Proceed just like you did the phase before and remember to not get greedy since Rom and her children cause a lot of damage if you get hit. If all children are killed again and you start bringing Rom lower on her HP bar she will show you her last move which is a flopping Combo, called Thrash combo. Rom will start thrashing from side to side and will knock you back if you get hit. This move can be dangerous for you since it's executed very fast and can catch you off guard. Best way here is again to hit her a few times and back off and wait for her to make a move. If you have any Bolt Paper left you can also use them here to fasten up the progress. Rom can also be staggered so that her teleport is delayed, sadly we don't know the exact requirements to stagger her yet.

Environment

  • The Moonside Lake is a completely flat and open battleground with no obstacles or terrain features of any kind. Although it has no visible boundaries, the area is effectively an enormous circle and you cannot travel beyond the outer edges; even so, its size leaves more than enough room for you to separate Rom from the smaller spiders and fight her a safe distance away.

Root Chalice Dungeons

  • There are, along with Additional Rites and Random Effects, some other completely hidden characteristics a dungeon can take on when created. These are mostly related to the enemies you'll find in the dungeon and how large its structure is. Many won't have a noticeable effect on the dungeon, but there are a few that can really shake things up. The most notable are the Spider Dungeon effect, in which the basic enemies are replaced by Children of Rom, which of course means the boss will be Rom, the Vacuous Spider.

Old Hunter Summons

Location Requirement
  • Old Hunter Henryk
    Confederate
: On the second floor, between two couches near the treasure chest.
  • He will not appear unless you have defeated him at the Tomb of Oedon (also Eileen has to survive the fight as part of her quest line) and are wearing the " Impurity" rune.
  • Younger Madaras Twin: Right next to the Byrgenwerth lamp. Walk off the little ledge, and it’ll be on that plateu with you, nestled between two trees.
  • You cannot summon him if you have already killed him outside the Small Windmill or are not wearing the " Impurity" rune.
  • Mensis Scholar Damian: In plain view outside the boss room.
  • Bear in mind that summoning him will prevent you from being able to summon Henryk or the Younger Madaras Twin in Byrgenwerth, but his habit of spamming the Choir Bell makes him well worth the tradeoff.
  • With patch v1.07 you are able to summon NPCs to come to your aid, just like cooperative play, including inside Chalice Dungeons. To do so, first you will need to acquire the “Old Hunter Bell” from the messengers in the Hunter’s Dream. In some areas you may be able to summon up to two NPC Hunters.

Notes

  • Rom, the Vacuous Spider is considered a kin even though it is not listed as such in the official guide. [tested]
  • Despite Rom, the Vacuous Spider having 999 Slow Poison & Rapid Poison resistances it is still vulnerable to such status.
  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • Approaching Queen Yharnam after defeating Rom will trigger Blood Moon timezone.
  • Having additional cooperators does not affect HP of Children of Rom unlike Rom's HP.
  • Flamesprayer can stagger Rom, possibly killing her without teleporting once.
  • In Miyazaki's interview for Future Press guide, he talks about Rom as "her" pointing that Rom is in fact female.
  • There is note in Oedon Chapel library mentioning Rom as "The Byrgenwerth Spider"
  • It is possible to postpone Blood Moon timezone shift by using Bold Hunter Mark/Hunter's Mark after defeating Rom, to trigger it later you have to return to Moonside Lake and approach Yharnam
  • Meteor Barrage attack: in second phase has different properties in unpatched 1.00 version and on current patch 1.09. In 1.00 projectiles aim in a scatter pattern like a shotgun blast, while on current patch it is aiming at your position that way you can dodge the meteors 100% consistently by sprinting in a straight line.

Cooperation & Boss' HP

  • Having a summoned ally doesn't alter the health or difficulty of the enemies you'll fight, but it does affect the bosses. To ensure they are still a challenge, boss health, showed in table above, is increased to 1.5x when a second co-op player enters your world, and to 2.0x when a third enters.

Rom, the Vacuous Spider Weak Points

  • In Total and Part HP columns you will find value of the base HP without area multiplier. In Bloodborne each entity has own base HP (and NG) value which is then multiplied by the area (or part of the area) multiplier in which enemy or boss is in.
  • In the HP Percentage column you will find value of how much damage you need to deal to that body part to break it in percentage of total boss HP.
  • Enemies and Bosses can have multiple weak points which some are breakable (listed with multipliers) and take higher damage while broken while some will have only higher damage multipler the whole time (mainly listed in the notes section).

  • Notes: While fighting Rom, focus on attacking only one of her sides - these spots can be injured with repeated attacks, after which point they'll take additional damage when hit.

Attack Patterns Phase One

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Rom, the Vacuous Spider
None
Children of Rom
Headbutt Dive No Mid-range forward jump attack; quickstep forward or sideways.
Web Shot No Mid-range forward web attack; quickstep sideways.
Rear Web Blast No Mid-range backward web shot; quickstep sideways.
  • Phase 1 Strategy: Rom will not attack at all during this Phase, so ignore her and focus instead on her children - the first group will not disappear when she summons more, so take your time and eliminate them before things heat up. Quickstep toward them and strike their bodies with melee attacks, but avoid hitting their heads as you'll inflict very little damage by doing so. Beware of their jumping headbutt and web attacks as both deal heavy damage, and don't fight more than one at a time if possible to avoid being surrounded. When all the small spiders are gone, power up your weapon with Bolt Paper and hit Rom's sides with your strongest attacks until she teleports away from you.

Attack Patterns Phase Two

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Rom, the Vacuous Spider
Magic Blast No Spherical area attack with a four-meter radius; quickstep away from Rom twice to avoid it.
Rising Meteors No Massive ring-shaped area attack; strikes between two and eight meters from her body but won't reach point blank range. Quickstep forward or backward.
Meteor Barrage No Rains Meteors on your current position regardless of range; stand still as soon as he uses it and they won't hit you. Note: has different properties in unpatched 1.00 version and on current patch 1.09. In 1.00 projectiles aim in a scatter pattern like a shotgun blast, while on current patch it is aiming at your position that way you can dodge the meteors 100% consistently by sprinting in a straight line.
  • Phase 2 Strategy: When Rom's health drops below 75% she'll teleport to the opposite side of the lake and summon another group of spiders; at this point she'll also begin attacking you directly with her spells. You can either defeat the spiders or ignore them and lure Rom away, but it's better to get rid of them now since they will not disappear even when she summons the final group. When you're within three to four meters of her, she'll raise her head and tail while a swirling vortex of energy surrounds her, then release a spherical blast of energy after a short delay. While this attack lingers too long for you to pass through it using your invincibility frames, it does leave enough time for you to quickstep backward twice and out of its range. At a distance of two to eight meters, Rom will roll over onto her back and summon a ring of ice boulders out of the lake beneath you after a short delay. The boulders strike an enormous ring-shaped area centered on Rom, but will miss you if you're standing against her sides; you can also escape them by quickstepping backward two to four times. If you're out of reach of both of these spells, Rom will rear up and summon barrages of ice boulders that will rain down on you from the sky no matter how far you are from her; these projectiles track your current location in real time, but will always target a small circle around and will never strike your exact position. To avoid being hit, stop moving as soon as she begins casting and watch the boulders carefully before dodging; alternately, you can prevent Rom from using this attack by staying close enough for her to reach you with the other two.

Attack Patterns Phase Three

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Rom, the Vacuous Spider
Thrash Combo No Thrashes from side to side at close range. Quickstep backward and wait for her to stop trashing.
  • Phase 3 Strategy: When you reduce her health to 50% Rom will teleport again and summon a final group of spiders. She will continue to use her spells in the same manner as during Phase 2, but will also begin using a flailing combo attack at extremely close range. This attack is easily avoided by quickstepping backward, but has a very fast startup and is likely to clip you if you're attacking while pressed directly against her side; she'll also wait until you're in the middle of a combo before initiating it to prevent you from being able to evade in time. Continue attacking Rom's sides and eliminate any spiders that get close enough to attack you; otherwise, focus on defeating her and ignore her children.

Base Level: Blood Echoes, HP, Damage and Def. Multipliers

  • For enemies that also appear (or exclusively appear) in dungeons, their stats will be shown at the base level, because their exact stats at any given point are calculated from these base values. The basic formula is: Total Value = Base x A x B x C x D. Multipliers written down below were datamined directly from the game files. Multiplier A represents depth (1 - 5) of the chalice dungeon; multiplier B is layer (1 - 4) of the specific chalice dungeon; multiplier C is used when dungeon is Pthumeru Ihyll; multiplier D is for calculating blood echoes when additional curse rite is used.
