Pthumerian Descendant ❘ トゥメルの末裔

Boss

Description

    In-game Name (multi-language)
English: Pthumerian Descendant; Japanese: トゥメル人の末裔; German: Pthumerianischer Abkömmling; Spanish: Descendente Pthumeriano; French: Descendant Pthumérien; Italian: Discendente Pthumeriano
    Internal Name
Japanese: ダンジョン人(ロード) 剣(二刀); Translation: Dungeon Dweller (lord) two swords

Preparation

  • Bring a single-shot firearm such as the Hunter Pistol or Evelyn and a full load of Quicksilver Bullets Avoid using the Repeating Pistol as you'll need as many opportunities as possible for interrupts; Bone Marrow Ash is only necessary if you plan to use the Cannon. If you've already obtained the Clawmark or Oedon Writhe runes, equip them beforehand and set your weapons with your best attack bonus gems. Weapons with heavy transformed modes such as the Kirkhammer and Ludwig's Holy Blade are well-suited to this fight, as are those with additional arcane damage, such as the Burial Blade If you've already obtained the Empty Phantasm Shell, use it to augment purely physical weapons with additional arcane damage; otherwise stock up on Fire Paper.

Overview

  • The Pthumerian Descendant is an extremely aggressive opponent with swift attacks, and will constantly run you down in an attempt to keep you at close range. His melee swings and combos consist almost exclusively of rapid horizontal slashes; his only notable special abilities are a boomerang technique with his scythes and a long-range aerial dive. Although he will attempt to trick you into lowering your guard by varying the timing of his swings and quickstepping toward you without taking any immediate action, the Pthumerian Descendant uses only a very small set of melee attacks, which are predictable enough for you to interrupt them; he can also be staggered from behind, but doing so is nearly impossible due to his swift responses.
  • During Phase 1 he will alternate between walking slowly toward you and lunging forward to perform his scythe combos, and will frequently throw his scythe at you if you're outside the range of his other attacks. At the beginning of Phase 2 he will separate his scythe into two and will begin using his Aerial Cleave technique; he'll also use heavier melee attacks and make a more focused effort to keep you at close range, but will otherwise fight in the same way as the first phase.
  • Main type of damage dealt by Pthumerian Descendant is Physical. More information about main damage types for all bosses are on Boss Damage Types wiki page.

Strategy

  • Interrupts are the most effective way of defeating the Pthumerian Descendant, but you'll have to constantly strafe and quickstep backward while waiting for opportunities and immediately quickstep back in to perform a visceral attack before he stands up again. During Phase 2 the safest strategy is to keep him at long range and constantly back away from him to bait his Aerial Cleave, then quickstep forward or sideways when he dives and hit him with heavy attacks before he can escape; however, you'll still have to stay on constant watch for his Double Boomerang Sickle and must be prepared to quickstep out of the way if he uses it.

Environment

  • The arena is an enormous circular room lined with statues at intervals along the edges. The room is free of obstructions, but the niches between the statues can trap you if the boss manages to back you into one; you'll need to keep the fight to the open area in the center to ensure that you have enough room to escape his Boomerang Sickle and bait his other attacks. Staying at long range is especially important during Phase 2; at this point you'll need to use the full diameter of the room to maintain the distance necessary to bait the boss' Aerial Cleave without backing into one of the niches or getting caught on a statue.

Notes

  • In various Root Dungeons you can rarely come across to Roaming Version who will act as strong enemy on your way to the layer boss
  • In root chalice dungeons: Lower Pthumeru Root Chalice, Sinister Lower Pthumeru Root Chalice, Cursed and Defiled Root Chalice, Pthumeru Ihyll Root Chalice, Sinister Pthumeru Ihyll Root Chalice, Isz Root Chalice and Sinister Isz Root Chalice you can encounter "glitched" Pthumerian Descendant where it's Pthumerian Descendant but named Pthumerian Elder
  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • Pthumerian Descendant can rarely drop abyssal gems on layer 1 and 2 in Depth 5 Chalice Dungeons.

Cooperation & Boss' HP

  • Having a summoned ally doesn't alter the health or difficulty of the enemies you'll fight, but it does affect the bosses. To ensure they are still a challenge, boss health is increased to 1.5x when a second co-op player enters your world, and to 2.0x when a third enters.

Attack Patterns Phase One

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Boomerang Sickle No Forward ranged attack that can hit you once in each direction; quickstep sideways at close to mid range or backward twice at long range.
  • Phase 1 Strategy: Keep the boss at mid to long range and bait him into rushing you with a sickle attack. When he swings, interrupt him and immediately quickstep forward to follow up with a visceral attack before he can recover; even if you're too late, you can still score a few hits before he stands up and take partial advantage of the damage bonus while he's staggered. Do not attempt to quickstep through his combos and counterattack him; he has super armor during his attacks and you're almost guaranteed to trade blows rather than knocking him out of his swings If he gets too close and initiates a combo before you can escape, quickstep forward through it and use additional quicksteps to establish some distance from him before he turns to face you again.

Attack Patterns Phase Two

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Double Boomerang Sickle No Throws two consecutive Boomerang Sickles; quickstep sideways once or twice at close to mid range or backward twice at long range.
Aerial Cleave Yes Jumps into the air, pauses briefly and performs a diving slash at your current position; quickstep forward under him or sideways.
  • Phase 2 Strategy: When his health drops below 50%, the Pthumerian Descendant will split his scythe into two and transition to his second phase. At this point he'll become even more persistent about rushing you down and attacking at close range, but as long as you constantly back away from him and keep a watchful eye out for his Double Boomerang Sickle, you can continue to bait and interrupt his melee combos. Alternately, keep him at long range either by constantly quickstepping away from him or locking off and running around the perimeter of the room while manually aiming your camera at him; this will prevent him from reaching you with any attacks other than his Double Boomerang Sickle and Aerial Cleave. Dodge the boomerang attack or simply continue running away from the boss to avoid it and wait for him to use the Aerial Cleave; when he does, roll under him and counterattack with one to two transformed R1 swings of a heavy weapon like Ludwig's Holy Blade before he can backstep out of your reach.

Base Level: Blood Echoes, HP, Damage and Def. Multipliers

  • For enemies that also appear (or exclusively appear) in dungeons, their stats will be shown at the base level, because their exact stats at any given point are calculated from these base values. The basic formula is: Total Value = Base x A x B x C x D. Multipliers written down below were datamined directly from the game files. Multiplier A represents depth (1 - 5) of the chalice dungeon; multiplier B is layer (1 - 4) of the specific chalice dungeon; multiplier C is used when dungeon is Pthumeru Ihyll; multiplier D is for calculating blood echoes when additional curse rite is used.
