Pthumerian Elder ❘ トゥメルの古老

Boss

Description

    In-game Name (multi-language)
English: Pthumerian Elder; Japanese: トゥメルの古老; German: Pthumerianischer Ältester; Spanish: Anciano Pthumerio; French: Personne Âgée Pthumérienne; Italian: Anziano Pthumeriano
    Internal Name
Japanese: ダンジョン人(ロード) ロッド・杖; Translation: Dungeon Dweller (lord) cane

Preparation

  • The Clawmark and Oedon Writhe runes are very useful for this fight if you have access to them; Poison Knives and gems that add large amounts of poison build-up to your weapon are helpful as well, especially rapid poison gems paired with the Chikage. If you don't plan on using poison, set your weapons with as many attack bonuses as you can. The Empty Phantasm Shell will provide the highest increase to your damage output, followed by Fire Paper, and the Charred Hunter attire will help reduce the damage from the boss' fire attacks. Heavy weapons with knockdown charge attacks (such as the Hunter Axe, Burial Blade and Ludwig's Holy Blade), are particularly effective at setting him up for further swings, while the transformation attacks of faster weapons like the Blade of Mercy are very good at causing him to stumble.

Overview

  • The Pthumerian Elder will move very slowly during the first half of the battle, though he'll frequently cover great distances by teleporting several times in a row. His consecutive teleports will always be in the same direction as the first, a trick you can use to help keep track of his location if he escapes you. At close range he'll use a few basic melee attacks and combos consisting of wide horizontal swings, forward thrusts and frontal overhead chops; from a distance, he'll shoot at you with his Fire Crossbow. Most of his attacks have very long reach and some, particularly his Spear Combo, also have extremely quick start ups that can be difficult to anticipate. His slower attacks are relatively easy to interrupt, however, and leave you just enough time to do so from out of their range before quickstepping in for a visceral attack.
  • The elder becomes far faster and more aggressive during Phase 2, at which point he'll bombard you with consecutive Fire Crossbow shots from long range and rapid combo attacks with heavy stun effects up close, in addition, some of his combo attacks will create waves of fire that travel forward, and he'll gain the ability to strike you anywhere on the battlefield with his Rising Skewer; he'll also begin chaining his Flame Lance, Sunburst and Rising Skewer techniques into his melee combos and will often perform a Sunburst followed immediately by a Flame Lance.
  • Main type of damage dealt by Pthumerian Elder is Physical, Blunt, Thrust. Mace (including subsequent explosion), hook and halberd attacks are blunt. Lance, ground spear and crossbow shots are thrust, rest melee attacks are physical. Despite the visible flaming effect appearing when getting hit by all attacks, only fireballs that drop during phase 2 staff spin attack actually deal fire damage. More information about main damage types for all bosses are on Boss Damage Types wiki page.

Strategy

  • Interrupts are most effective against the Pthumerian Elder, but require careful timing and positioning; the easiest attacks to interrupt are his Fire Cleave, Fireball Rain and the first hit of his Scythe Combo. Alternatively, bait him into finishing one of his combos by quickstepping forward through the first two hits, then quickstep behind him when he initiates the third and stagger him with a charged R2 attack. Be on the lookout for his quick forward thrusts, especially during Phase 2; you can interrupt these as well, but the timing required is extremely precise.

Environment

  • The battlefield is an enormous circular platform with a raised perimeter and no obstacles other than the railing along the outside edge. While this provides plenty of open ground on which to fight, be careful not to become trapped in the corners near the entrance and exit - these spots are dangerous not only because they restrict movement but because they lack railings, and although the elder cannot fall from them, you can. In general, try to keep the fight to the middle of the arena, as backing the boss against the edge leaves you less room to evade his attacks and launch your own.

Notes

  • Patch Notes v1.04: Players can now acquire a Short Ritual Root Chalice by trading Insight. Available for purchase after completing Pthumeru Chalice by defeating Watchdog of the Old Lords on layer 3 of Pthumerian Labyrinth
  • Elder will not drop Short Ritual Root Chalice if it's been bought already from Insight Bath Messengers
  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • Elder can teleport to its death by falling from the edge of area.
  • In various Root Dungeons you can rarely come across to Roaming Version who will act as strong enemy on your way to the layer boss

Pthumerian Elder

Pungent Blood Cocktails don't attract this enemy, making the item ineffective.
Shaman Bone Blades don't affect this enemy, making the item ineffective.

Cooperation & Boss' HP

  • Having a summoned ally doesn't alter the health or difficulty of the enemies you'll fight, but it does affect the bosses. To ensure they are still a challenge, boss health is increased to 1.5x when a second co-op player enters your world, and to 2.0x when a third enters.

Attack Patterns Phase One

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Fire Crossbow No High-speed, long-range projectile; quickstep sideways or forward through it.
Fire Cleave Yes 360-degree counterclockwise horizontal slash with slow windup and dark-red flame; quickstep in any direction as late as possible.
Spear Combo Yes Up to three hits starting with a forward thrust. Long reach and extremely fast startup; quickstep forward if close or backward if at mid range or beyond.
Hook Combo Yes Diagonal hook slash followed by one of two identical overheads with slightly different timing; quickstep forward past each hit or backward out of reach.
Scythe Combo Yes Diagonal slash with slow windup followed by a horizontal slash and a vertical chop; interrupt it or quickstep backward.
  • Phase 1 Strategy: Keep no less than five meters of distance from the boss and wait for him to use a slow swing, such as his Fire Cleave or the first attack in his Scythe Combo, then interrupt him. You'll need to quickstep forward immediately in order to perform a visceral attack before he recovers, but even if you're too late, you'll still have time to take advantage of the damage bonus from his stagger state. If you prefer to use ordinary melee attacks, stand out of reach and wait for the elder to begin a combo, then strafe backward until he cancels it and quickstep forward to hit him a few times before he teleports (or, quickstep forward through the first two swings and stagger him with a charged attack from behind as he performs the third). Hit him with transformation attacks when he finishes his combos to make him stumble and knock him out of any follow-up swings; alternatively, use these openings knock him down with charged R2s as you'll have enough time to hit him with another as he stands up.

Attack Patterns Phase Two

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Repeating Fire Crossbow No Up to four consecutive Fire Crossbow shots; quickstep forward or sideways before each shot.
Rising Skewer No Strikes your current location from below with a spear. Extremely quick and difficult to identify; roll or quickstep in any direction.
Diving Slice No Flies into the air, hovers for 1.5 seconds and performs a flying slash toward your current position. If close, quickstep forward; if far, quickstep right.
Flame Lance Yes Charging forward thrust attack with fast start up and extremely long reach; quickstep forward or sideways as late as possible.
Sunburst Yes Overhead attack with a spiked ball of fire, followed by a delayed explosion at the point of impact; quickstep forward past him or backward twice.
Fireball Rain Yes Spins staff above his head, raining fireballs in a large circular area, followed by a horizontal slash. Interrupt the slash or quickstep backward.
  • Phase 2 Strategy: Keep him at long range and don't let him get anywhere near you. Dodge his Fire Crossbow shots and keep a careful eye out for him to perform a quick flourish with his flame scythe before slamming it into the ground, a signal that he's about to use his Rising Skewer Bait his Diving Slice and quickstep forward though the attack, then immediately perform an R1 or L2 combo with a heavy weapon such as the transformed Hunter Axe or Ludwig's Holy Blade. If you time your attack correctly, your swings will cause him to stumble and prevent him from launching further attacks after he lands, forcing him to retreat; at this point, retreat to long range again and repeat the process.

Base Level: Blood Echoes, HP, Damage and Def. Multipliers

  • For enemies that also appear (or exclusively appear) in dungeons, their stats will be shown at the base level, because their exact stats at any given point are calculated from these base values. The basic formula is: Total Value = Base x A x B x C x D. Multipliers written down below were datamined directly from the game files. Multiplier A represents depth (1 - 5) of the chalice dungeon; multiplier B is layer (1 - 4) of the specific chalice dungeon; multiplier C is used when dungeon is Pthumeru Ihyll; multiplier D is for calculating blood echoes when additional curse rite is used.
