Micolash, Host of the Nightmare ❘ 悪夢の主、ミコラーシュ

Boss

Description

    In-game Name (multi-language)
English: Micolash, Host of the Nightmare; Japanese: 悪夢の主ミコラーシュ; German: Micolash, Wirt des Albtraums; Spanish: Micolash, Huésped de la Pasadilla; French: Micolash, Hôte du Cauchemar; Italian: Micolash, Signore dell'Incubo
    Internal Name
Japanese: トラップロード 悪夢の主; Translation: Lord of the Nightmare of Trap Road
  • Micolash is called the host — more broadly, the “master” or “owner” (主) — of the Nightmare of Mensis and can thereby be presumed the leading figure in the School of Mensis as a whole. - Lokey

Stats & Equipment

  • Tables below consist of datamined stats and equipment, this specific information is for NPCs, hunters or less, that uses a player-like human model and skeleton, practically every NPC that can be equipped with player's gears. Some characters are equipped with items that they aren't programmed to use by the AI, such items are highlighted. All characters have infinite Quicksilver Bullets and 99 copies of any item they hold (including Blood Vials) and the only thing that prevents from infinitely consuming them is written in their AI script. For information about all characters visit Datamined NPCs Stats & Equipment wiki page.

Preparation

  • Stock up on Blood Vials, Quicksilver Bullets and Bone Marrow Ash. If you picked up the six Shaman Bone Blades from the corpse on the ground floor and still have a few left, bring them with you; if you've been collecting gems with slow or rapid poison effects, they can be useful for this battle due to Micolash's low poison resistance. Single-shot firearms, such as the Hunter Pistol or Evelyn, are ideal; the Repeating Pistol is also a good choice if used with Bone Marrow Ash, though you may need to use Blood Bullets if it depletes your supply of Quicksilver Bullets before the fight ends. It's a good idea to bring 20 Poison Knives, 20 normal Throwing Knives and 10 Molotovs as well; having these available will allow you to extend your use of ranged attacks and avoid a straight fight with Micolash during Phase 2.

Overview

  • This unusual boss battle is essentially a game of cat and mouse. During the first Phase, you'll have to chase Micolash around the library while avoiding the Skeletal Puppets wandering the area and ultimately herd him into a dead-end room, where he'll be forced into combat.
  • If you attack him in the hallways, he'll teleport a short distance away from you and will flee again as soon as you approach. The room in which you'll need to corner him houses a few Skeletal Puppets that can either help or hinder you, depending upon which steps you took to prepare.
  • Micolash will initially strafe around you and periodically cast Augur of Ebrietas, beware he can follow it up with the visceral attack if he manages to parry you with it! [clip] At the beginning of Phase 2 he'll teleport away and the fog blocking the exit will vanish, allowing you access to the central staircase. When you reach the top, you'll have to pursue him through a larger and more complicated series of rooms and corner him again. You'll still have to deal with wandering Skeletal Puppets, and Micolash will now escape from you by jumping into the mirrors scattered throughout the area and emerging in a different location. After chasing him into the dead-end room in the center of this area, a gate will close behind him, trapping him inside; when you enter this room from above and engage him, he'll fight the same way as during Phase 1, but will now also use A Call Beyond.
  • Main type of damage dealt by Micolash, Host of the Nightmare is Arcane. More information about main damage types for all bosses are on Boss Damage Types wiki page.

Strategy

  • Normal R1 combos are the best way to deal damage; poison is also effective and will continue to damage him even after he teleports away. You can turn the Skeletal Puppets in the trap rooms against him by stabbing them with Shaman Bone Blades, providing distractions and temporary allies; during Phase 2 you can power up your firearms with Bone Marrow Ash and snipe him from above the dead-end room once he's trapped inside.

Environment

  • The battle with Micolash takes place throughout an enormous section of the loft's upper floors. This area consists of several square rooms connected by a series of narrow hallways and is filled with thick fog, making it difficult to keep track of the boss if he gets too far away. While neither Micolash nor the Skeletal Puppets found throughout the halls are aggressive enough that you'll need to take cover at any point, the labyrinthine corridors can make it difficult to get your bearings and provide Micolash with considerable cover from you.

Notes

  • Upon Micolash defeat bridge will rise and connect to, newly spawned, Mergo's Loft: Middle lamp.
  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • In unpatched version 1.0 there were few differences, Skeletal Puppets revived much faster increasing the difficulty and small ramp was missing leading to final room of the second phase boss fight. This could lead to lethal fall and without the ramp you couldn't go back once you were on the balcony. [image]

Cooperation & Boss' HP

  • Having a summoned ally doesn't alter the health or difficulty of the enemies you'll fight, but it does affect the bosses. To ensure they are still a challenge, boss health, showed in table above, is increased to 1.5x when a second co-op player enters your world, and to 2.0x when a third enters.

Attack Patterns Phase One

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Augur of Ebrietas No Same as the player version. Mid-range forward tentacle attack; quickstep sideways or backward.
  • Phase 1 Strategy: Micolash has low health and no super armor, so ordinary R1 combos are the best way to deal with him. You'll have to watch out for his Augur of Ebrietas spell, as it will knock you down if it hits you, but is easily avoided with a sideways quickstep and offers you an opportunity to attack him while he recovers, but beware he can follow it up with the visceral attack if he manages to parry you with it! [clip]. The Skeletal Puppets in the trap room pose more of a threat than Micolash, so try to stay away from them and keep track of their locations to avoid being attacked while dealing with him Quickstepping attacks will often clip Micolash before he can move out of the way, and heavy blows with knockdown effects, such as the transformed R2 charge attacks of the Burial Blade and the Hunter Axe, work quite well. It's best to save your Shaman Bone Blades for Phase 2 unless you plan to snipe Micolash from above without engaging him directly.

Attack Patterns Phase Two

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
A Call Beyond No Same as the player version. Rains small blasts of energy on a spherical area with frontal homing capability; quickstep sideways or forward.
  • Phase 2 Strategy: Trap Micolash in the dead-end room and loop around to the upper floor overlooking his location. At this point you can either use Bone Marrow Ash on your pistol or Cannon and rain death on him from above, or drop into the room with a plunging attack and fight directly. Poison Knives are especially effective from this perch, due to Micolash's low poison resistance, and will deal continuous damage while you hit him with other ranged attacks such as pistol shots, Molotovs or Throwing Knives. If you choose to face Micolash directly, he will fight in the same way as during the first Phase; however, beware that he will also begin casting A Call Beyond, which can be hard to avoid in the enclosed space.

Ah, Kos, or some say Kosm... Do you hear our prayers? As you once did for the vacuous Rom. Grant us eyes, grant us eyes. Plant eyes on our brains, to cleanse our beastly idiocy.
