Basic Information

Discovery
  • Increasing arcane stat raises Discovery. This helps find more items after defeating enemies. It's not strictly required, but it does help with finding supplies while running Chalice Dungeons. Other option how to increase Discovery, without leveling up arcane, is to equip an Eye Caryll Rune.
  • Leveling Arcane past 50 does not increase Discovery, therefore it is the hard cap for this stat. Maximum value of the Discovery from leveling arcane is 209. Soft cap is at Acrane level 30 where increase in Discovery lowers from 3-4 to 2 increase per level.
  • Maximum Discovery: Max value is 439 and it is achieved by hitting hard cap (50) of the leveling Arcane, equipping all three tiers of Eye Caryll Runes (+50, +70, +100) and Milkweed Oath Rune (+10).
  • Original hypothesis was that Item Discovery may simply alter the loot tables of SOME enemies given certain minimum thresholds are met. More on Eye Runes and Item Discovery research here: [Reddit] More Than Meets The Eye (Rune)
  • UPDATE: First part of investigation to see how a bloodgem’s rarity varies with discovery. Research data on Bloodgem rarity and discovery [Archived DOC / PDF] document made by Lake of Mud.

Item Discovery in Chalice Dungeons

  • An undocumented feature of Bloodborne's Chalice Dungeons is that the Curse rite applies an invisible modifier to the player character's Discovery. This was discovered by DrAnger90, and is detailed on Item Discovery in Chalice Dungeons wiki page. A player character's Discovery stat is determined through a combination of the Arcane stat and any Eye or Milkweed runes they have equipped, with the maximum value attainable being 439. However, when exploring a Chalice Dungeon with the Cursed rite applied, this value is increased by 1000.
  • This additional 1000 Discovery is not visible on the status screen, but is still factored into any calculations the game makes, explaining why items (especially Blood Gems) drop far more frequently in Cursed dungeons. However, the additional Discovery is only added if the player character already has at least one Eye or Milkweed rune equipped - a player character without any runes that increase the Discovery stat will only use the base value derived from their Arcane stat. Chalice Dungeons created through save editing can be made to use a removed rite called "Terrible Curse", a more potent Curse which reduces the player character's max HP to 25% or 12.5%, rather than 50%. Like Curse, Terrible Curse adds an invisible modifier to Discovery, but in this case the bonus is 5000, rather than 1000.

Notes

  • Diminishing Returns is a common concept in RPGs, meaning that for a given investment, i.e. one point in a stat, you receive a smaller benefit, e.g. fewer hit points per point in the HP stat.
