Description

  • These massive towering giants can inflict tremendous damage and will send you flying any time one of their attacks connect, but their long windup and recovery periods leave them vulnerable, and make them much less frightening than they first appear. They also walk and turn extremely slowly, allowing you to position yourself behind them where most of their attacks can't reach you. They have very high defense, enormous amounts of health, high fire and bolt resistance, and they cannot be interrupted or staggered normally; breaking their super armor with a charged attack or by hitting their heads will bring them to their knees momentarily and allow you to get in a few extra hits.
  • The massive iron wrecking balls wielded by some Church Giants have extremely long range, but are nearly incapable of striking close to their bodies, creating enormous blind spots and adding to their already glaring weaknesses. Avoid standing in front of them, as this is where the majority of their attacks are targeted, although most of these will not hit you if you stand extremely close. Positioning yourself behind them at pointblank range will allow you to evade everything they have, even their 360-degree spins.
  • Unarmed Church Giants are a bit faster than those with weapons and their basic melee attacks have less windup, but they also have shorter reach and will usually only strike the area directly in front of them. Unlike the other Church Giants, these are capable of hitting you while you're directly behind them using their Turnaround Swipe. They don't use this attack often, though, and it has just enough windup for you to identify it and back out of the way before it hits you.
  • Encountered only once in Lecture Building 2F, this Church Giant with Flame Fists shares some moves (like the Running Haymaker) with the normal bare fisted version, but his regular melee attacks are slightly different. They mainly consist of wide horizontal hook punches, slow combo attacks and vertical slams, all of which are made even more dangerous by the fact that their fists are on fire. Both unarmed versions attack a fair bit faster than those wielding weapons, but they still have just enough windup to see them coming and quickstep through them. Unlike armed Church Giants both fist versions have also powerful slam attacks with their left or right arm where they break them and you can hit the bone that sticks out of them to make them stagger for a moment, with no visceral opportunity though.
  • There is one move that can be used by all Church Giants, and while they rarely use it, you should always be on the lookout for it. If you're standing reasonably close in front of them they'll sometimes raise their leg up and use a powerful stamp, so powerful that it actually breaks their leg. When that happens you'll be able to see the bone sticking out of their knee, and if you attack it you'll do considerably more damage than normal and have the ability to stagger them. Standing in front of them does put you at greater risk from their other attacks, however, so you'll need to be careful.

Strategy

  • Clear out all the Parasite Larvae near these enemies first by luring them into the side caverns where the giants can't reach. When you've cleared a safe spot in which to fight the giants, preferably on the sand along the walls or the islands jutting out of the poison, lure them towards you one at a time with gunshots or thrown weapons, and then take them down with R1 combos. Keep an eye out for their Turnaround Swipe, and be prepared to strafe or quickstep away from them if they use it. If you've already picked up the Cannon from the windmill before exploring this area, you can use it to simultaneously blast the giants and wipe out any Parasite Larvae caught in the explosion.

  • You will find some of the Church Giants kneeling in which case they are sleeping and therefore vulnerable.
