Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen ❘ トゥメルの女王、ヤーナム

Boss

Description

    In-game Name (multi-language)
English: Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen; Japanese: トゥメルの女王ヤーナム; German: Yharnam, Pthumerianische Königin; Spanish: Yharnam, Reina Pthumeria; French: Yharnam, Reine Pthumérienne; Italian: Yharnam, Regina Pthumeriana
    Internal Name
Japanese: ダンジョン人(花嫁); Translation: Dungeon Dweller (bride)
When the red moon hangs low, the line between man and beast is blurred. And when the Great Ones descend, a womb will be blessed with child.
  • In ancient Pthumeru, the Scourge of Beasts ravaged the land. It must have been then that the Blood Moon arose, perhaps for the very first time, and a womb was blessed with child. It's unknown if Yharnam was impregnated by the Great Ones specifically because she was Queen, or if she was simply a woman chosen at random, but she is most assuredly assumed to have been, in that Hunt, the potential mother of a Great One.
    [The Paleblood Hunt by Redgrave]

Preparation

  • Stock up on Blood Vials, Quicksilver Bullets and Antidotes, and if you have Oedon Writhe or Clawmark runes, equip them before heading to the dungeon. Consider bringing a Reiterpallasch and a Cannon, but pick up plenty of Bone Marrow Ash regardless of what firearm you choose. Bring a weapon with a pure physical damage type and set it with your strongest attack bonus gems; the Rifle Spear is the best weapon for this battle, due to its long reach, and will allow you to strike from outside the reach of the boss' paralysis attack.

Overview

  • The Pthumerian Queen has strong elemental and arcane defenses as well as an enormous amount of health. She will start Phase 1 with her hands bound, and will use only blood magic attacks until the next phase begins. Her spells inflict rapid poison build-up and cannot be interrupted, although they will be cancelled if she is hit while casting. She can be staggered from behind, but her Paralysis Cry attack will almost always hit you before you have time to finish charging.
  • Once her health has been reduced to 80% she will break her cuffs and draw a dagger, with which she'll perform hysical attacks in addition to her blood magic; at this point her Blood Spears will be replaced by Triple Blood Spears and she will begin using her other Phase 2 moves. Her melee attacks are all interruptible and consist of basic slashes and stabs from close range; the Gliding Stab is performed at mid range and has a heavy knockback. She'll occasionally teleport and reappear with two clones, but you can tell them apart by their appearance: only the real queen is pregnant. The clones use the queen's knife attacks and Blood Spears, and present considerable danger when left alive; however, a single gunshot or melee attack will destroy them.
  • After her health falls to 50% she will cover her dagger with blood, extending its reach and adding a rapid poison effect to her melee attacks; from this point on, she will begin using her Phase 3 moves and will always use her Rising Blood Spear attack six times in a row.
  • Main type of damage dealt by Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen is Physical, Thrust, Arcane. Melee attacks are either purely physical/thrust or have small arcane part. Blood attacks and telekinesis grab deal Arcane damage. More information about main damage types for all bosses are on Boss Damage Types wiki page.

Strategy

  • During Phase 1, use the Rifle Spear's standard R2 attack from outside the reach of Queen Yharnam's Paralysis Cry to knock her out of her casting animations and prevent her from attacking while you wear her down. From Phase 2 onward, use the Reiterpallasch to interrupt her melee attacks and immediately follow up with a Bone Marrow Ash Cannon shot while she's staggered. When you run out of ammunition, continue interrupting her swings and use visceral attacks to regain your Quicksilver Bullets with the power of the Oedon Writhe rune, then repeat the procedure.

Environment

  • The boss area is a massive dome, empty save for the large altar in the center. The altar can be used reliably as cover for healing or Antidotes use during the first phase, though during later phases it can obstruct your vision, making Queen Yharnam's Rising Blood Spears difficult to avoid.

Notes

  • First met upon defeat of Rom, the Vacuous Spider. Next encounter is before approaching the Mergo's Wet Nurse in Nightmare of Mensis. Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen is final boss in Great Pthumeru Ihyll Labyrinths
  • In the first two main story encounters Yharnam doesn't drop anything
  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • It is possible to obtain trophy for Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen as cooperator (normal & via SRRC) when she is killed in host's world.
  • After Nurse defeat, you can return to Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen and she will bow to you and disappear.
  • Grab attacks can be escaped more quickly, taking less damage in the process, if you alternate pressing buttons like L2 and R2. Unlike in previous Souls titles any combination of buttons can be used for this technique.
  • Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen clones have no visible health bar and will disappear after being hit but Rapid Poison "proc" by rolling does nothing to them, same goes for Slow Poison but sound and aura of active effect is present.
  • She will be present in Nightmare of Mensis even if killed in Great Pthumeru Ihyll Labyrinth
  • Variant of Yharnam appears in test dungeons with the name "Pthumerian Bride".
  • Queen Yharnam can be pushed with Beast Roar out of her initial spot in Nightmare of Mensis, she can't go through any elevator nor Iron Key door, there are invisible walls preventing her from proceeding further, doesn't take small fall damage and is not aggroing the enemy. [image 01, image 02, image 03, image 04, Shoes]
  • In game version 1.00 the track used for this boss fight was Watchdog of the Old Lords theme.
  • It is to believed that Queen Yharnam wears Ring of Bethrothal, upon closer investigation of in-game model there are some similarities but it is difficult to say for certain. [image 01]
  • Through data mining of Yharnam's dagger model, you can see there are writings on the weapon. [image]

Cooperation & Boss' HP

  • Having a summoned ally doesn't alter the health or difficulty of the enemies you'll fight, but it does affect the bosses. To ensure they are still a challenge, boss health is increased to 1.5x when a second co-op player enters your world, and to 2.0x when a third enters.

Attack Patterns Phase One

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Blood Spears No Shoots up to three consecutive blood spears; move to either side or run diagonally towards her.
Blood Burst No Large spherical explosion of blood used at mid to close range. Quickstep back once she raises both arms.
Blood Spray No Sprays a forward arc of rapid poison build-up inflicting blood from side to side. Quickstep backward.
Paralysis Cry No The baby in her womb will cry, emitting a short-range paralyzing wave. Quickstep back the moment the cry begins.
  • Phase 1 Strategy: Stand just outside the reach of her Paralyzing Cry and strike her with single R2 attacks using the Rifle Spear. Use only one thrust at a time and do not charge the attack - your goal is to hit the queen first and prevent her from taking action while at the same time avoiding the dangerous paralysis attack. If you time your strikes correctly and strafe backward after each one to compensate for your forward momentum, you can keep her completely helpless throughout the entirety of Phase 1 and prevent her from ever having a chance to attack If you don't have a Rifle Spear, wait for her to perform an action and quickstep toward her as she recovers afterward. Hit her with a quickstepping attack followed immediately by a transformation attack to make her stumble, then quickstep backward twice to escape the incoming counterattack. You'll need to be patient and repeat this procedure many times to wear her down and trigger Phase 2, so keep an eye on your stamina and don't get greedy with your attacks.

Attack Patterns Phase Two

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Telekinesis No Holds her womb, creating a large telekinetic area around herself; quickstep repeatedly backward out of it.
Triple Blood Spears No Launches three blood spears at once up to three times; replaces her Blood Spears move. Roll or quickstep to either side away from each shot.
Gliding Stab Yes Easy to interrupt, quickstep to either side while she is gliding; the initial tracking will catch an early dodge.
Rising Blood Spear No Stabs her palm, creating a blood spear beneath you; can be done up to three times. Lock off and run in any direction to avoid them.
Blood Spear Wave No Stabs her palm three times sending a wave of blood spears across the ground in a different direction each time. Quickstep out of the way according to the direction they come from.
  • Phase 2 Strategy: When the queen's health drops below 80%, she'll break free of her handcuffs and draw a dagger From this point onward she will use a set of very basic physical attacks which can be easily interrupted, and will continue using her previous moves in addition to her new Phase 2 abilities. In spite of her wider arsenal of attacks, the Rifle Spear will still reach her from outside the range of her Paralyzing Cry and you should continue to use it in the same manner as during Phase 1; by timing your thrusts carefully you will be able to continually knock her out of her attacks and prevent her from being able to act until the third phase begins. Without a Rifle Spear you'll need to continue using the alternative melee strategy from Phase 1, darting in to strike with transformation attacks and retreating immediately afterward. Another effective strategy from this phase onward is to power up the Cannon with Bone Marrow Ash, then interrupt the queen's physical attacks with a gunshot from the Reiterpallasch. When she staggers, blast her with the Cannon to take advantage of the damage bonus and inflict a tremendous amount of damage; if you run out of ammunition, create a few Blood Bullets and use the Oedon Writhe rune to restore your standard ammunition with ordinary visceral attacks.

Attack Patterns Phase Three

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Blood Geyser No Stabs the floor creating multiple rapid bursts of blood in a large area around her; blood rains down for a short period after. Quickstep backward twice.
  • Phase 3 Strategy: When the queen's health drops below 50% she'll cover her dagger in blood, extending its range and effectively turning it into a sword. All of her physical attacks will inflict rapid poison build-up from this point onward, but even now, the Rifle Spear will still reach her from outside her melee range and can be used in the same way as during previous phases to keep her helpless while you chip away at her nearly bottomless reserves of health. If you choose not to use the Rifle Spear, you'll need to continue following the alternate melee strategy from both previous phases instead, using hit-and-run tactics to gradually wear her down or inflicting burst damage with visceral attacks and the cannon. Regardless of what strategy you use, be especially careful of the queen's Blood Geyser attack - it strikes an extremely wide area and rains poisonous blood for a brief period of time following the initial bursts of blood, so you'll have to get as far from her as possible if you're unable to stop her from using it.

Base Level: Blood Echoes, HP, Damage and Def. Multipliers

  • For enemies that also appear (or exclusively appear) in dungeons, their stats will be shown at the base level, because their exact stats at any given point are calculated from these base values. The basic formula is: Total Value = Base x A x B x C x D. Multipliers written down below were datamined directly from the game files. Multiplier A represents depth (1 - 5) of the chalice dungeon; multiplier B is layer (1 - 4) of the specific chalice dungeon; multiplier C is used when dungeon is Pthumeru Ihyll; multiplier D is for calculating blood echoes when additional curse rite is used.
