Nightmare Apostle ❘ 悪夢の使徒

Regular Enemy

Description

  • Spider-like creatures encountered mainly on the ground floor of the chapel in the Nightmare of Mensis and in Chalice Dungeons; there's also a variant with a human head, but both share very similar attacks and behavior. They attack by stabbing and slashing with their long legs, and will also occasionally sit up on their abdomens to perform a rapid multi-hit combo. They lunge forward during most of their attacks, effectively giving them much longer range than their small stature might suggest, but are completely unable to hit you while you're behind them. The Nightmare Apostles on the ground floor initially hang from a large web and can either be knocked down with ranged attacks or drawn down by getting close to them; by striking them one at a time with Throwing Knives you can avoid having to fight too many at once, although you will still eventually need to get close enough that any apostles remaining in the web will drop down to attack.
  • Human head variant has two unique attacks in its sleeve, delayed arcane explosion [image] where Nightmare Apostle slowly summons small AoE attack when you stick in the close range for longer period of time. Another unique attack is Poison Cloud released from its back part of the body as only defense when you are positioned behind it.

Strategy

  • When first entering the chapel, use Throwing Knives or Poison Throwing Knives to knock them down from the web one at a time and eliminate them individually before knocking down more When the large one inevitably gets involved, retreat into the small antechamber at the entrance, or even all the way outside, where it can't reach you, and fight the small ones there. Quickstep forward through their attacks to position yourself behind them, and do your best to stay there while you let loose with a R1 combos. Much like with Rabid Dogs, shooting them will knock them over, giving you a chance to attack They are immune to visceral attacks and have no particular weakness to any element or damage type, so all weapons are equally effective.

Basic variant found throughout in Nightmare of Mensis. Variant with Human Head found in Nightmare of Mensis.

Notes

  • Preset Chalice Dungeons: Lower Hintertomb, Lower Pthumerian Labyrinth, Ailing Loran, Lower Loran, Isz Gravestone, Pthumeru Ihyll
  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • In Chalice Dungeons variants with purple aura have different drop pool and rates from regular version. Human head variant has the same stats (HP, Echoes, Defences, Multipliers & Bonuses) but different drop (pool & rates). Both variants (regular and human head) summoned by Bell Ringer differ only with blood echoes they drop (base 19) and no drop.

Nightmare Apostle
Pungent Blood Cocktails don't attract this enemy, making the item ineffective.
Shaman Bone Blades affect this enemy, making it hostile to other enemies.
