Description

    An elderly man bound to a wheelchair, Gehrman is a mysterious character who appears to act as the Hunter's guide throughout the game.
  • Gehrman is a kindly old man whom you'll first meet upon awakening in the Hunter's Dream He is the workshop's founder and the very first hunter, though due to his advanced age he now serves only as an advisor; as such, he has a wealth of experience and will provide you with his wisdom and guidance throughout your exploration of Yharnam. You'll usually find him in the workshop building but he'll occasionally be absent, in which case he'll sometimes leave you a message with a hint or suggestion about where you should go next.
  • Attacking him when he is in in the workshop will cause him to temporarily disappear but will have no other effects, so you don't need to worry about accidentally turning him hostile.
  • At the end of the game Gehrman will move to the base of the tree adjoining the workshop, at which point you can speak to him to initiate the game's final boss sequences and closing events. In order to obtain Old Hunter Badge from him, you must select "Refuse" when prompted with a choice during his dialogue; attacking him before initiating the conversation will proceed with the event as though you had selected "Refuse".

Location

  • Gehrman is found inside the workshop in Hunter's Dream. The elderly man will recognize you as "the new hunter" and will encourage you to kill a few beasts.
  • During the end game he will move to the Foot of the Great Tree in Hunter's Dream.

Progression

Hunter's Dream Workshop [Day / Evening / Night / Blood Moon]
Speak to him each time you visit the Hunter's Dream to receive additional dialogue. His dialogue will update after you defeat bosses and when the time of day advances; he'll also sometimes be absent but will leave messages on the ground in his usual location.
2.
Hunter's Dream Foot of the Great Tree [Blood Moon]
Enter the field of flowers beyond the iron gate and speak to him at the foot of the large tree to initiate the game's final sequence of events.

Notes

  • He will not drop Blood Dreg when Corruption Oath Caryll rune is equipped.
  • He will not react nor take any damage when you hit him with Flamesprayer and Rosmarinus.
  • Gehrman is missing at least part of his right foot.

Basic Information

  • This is a breakdown of every possible event for Gehrman in the Hunter’s Dream. This was put together using event script (emevd), talk param & esd data, and the game’s subtitles. Foxyhooligans included some excerpts of dialogue that did not make it into the final game. They were added where it felt the most appropriate, basing it on the index numbers of the subtitles and talk param IDs. Anything involving removed dialogue is purely speculation and should not be taken as fact.
  • 1. The game starts, event flag 1020 is ON. When you die for the first time, you will respawn in the dream and the lamp in Iosefka’s Clinic will be unlocked. If you do NOT climb the ladder to the second lamp in Central Yharnam and return to the dream via the first lamp, there is a 25% chance for Gehrman to spawn behind the workshop. If event flag 100 is ON, this chance is raised to 100%. Gehrman is sleeping, and approaching his radius will prompt some small snoring and mumbling in his sleep. If you attempt to talk to him, he will continue snoring. Note: This behavior may happen at 2 other points in the story, see section (4) and (8).
  • 2. Talk to Gehrman for the first time, he is in the workshop.

  • 4. Next time you leave and enter the dream, Gehrman will be set to disabled, because of event flag 1022 being ON in event ID 12100160. Just like the beginning of the game, he has a 25% chance to appear behind the workshop. When you enter his radius, you will hear him lightly snoring and mumbling in his sleep. Talking to him just results in more snoring.
  • 5. Defeat Gascoigne and enter Cathedral Ward; Gehrman will be back in the workshop and tell you about a Holy Chalice in Old Yharnam.

  • 7. Talking to him a third time will result in a little more dialogue.

  • 8. Next time you leave and enter the dream, Gehrman will be gone, because of event flag 1024 being ON. A note will be placed in the workshop telling the player about the Holy Chalice. If you kill the Blood-starved Beast OR you have already received the Pthumeru Chalice in a prior NG cycle, this note will NOT appear. He will have a 25% chance to spawn behind the workshop. Like (4), approaching his radius results in him snoring and mumbling in his sleep. Talking to him results in more snoring.
  • 9. If you kill Blood-starved Beast OR kill Amelia and enter night time, event flag 1025 will be turned ON. Gehrman will return and tell the hunter about Ludwig and the Odeon Chapel workshop.
501200 'The Healing Church, and the Blood Ministers who belong to it...'.

  • 11. Leaving the dream and re-entering will make Gehrman disappear, because of event flag 1026 being on, leaving a note that tells the player to ascend to Odeon Chapel. This note will disappear once you have looted the chest at the top of the Healing Church Workshop.
  • 12. After this, there is a 10% chance for Gehrman to re-appear behind the workshop next to the stump messengers UNLESS event flag 100 is ON, which will make it a 100% chance. He will deliver the following dialogue. Note: If the Orphan of Kos is dead AND you have NOT heard the Doll tell the player that Gehrman is sleeping peacefully (following Orphan's death) this chance is reduced to 0%.

  • 13. Once you have entered Blood Moon state AND you have heard the dialogue in (12), you will again have a 10% chance for Gehrman to appear behind the workshop and deliver the following dialogue. Again, if event flag 100 is on the chance will be 100%. If the Orphan of Kos is dead AND you have NOT heard the Doll tell the player that Gehrman is sleeping peacefully (following Orphan's death) this chance is reduced to 0%.
