Strong Enemy

Description

  • These powerful enemies have enormous range and a protective battle stance that drastically reduces the damage they take from the front when they aren't performing an action Executioners can dish out huge amounts of damage very quickly and knock you down with most of their attacks. If you hang back and try to shoot them, they'll immediately use their Jump Attack to close the distance and hit you while you're stuck in the animation; they'll also sometimes use this attack to strike you on the ground after knocking you down with their Upward Chop.
  • If you stand directly in front of them for too long they'll hit you with a fast Headbutt, or attempt a lethal grab attack. Many of their attacks are used to counter your actions. Strafing around them at close range triggers the Downward Slam, which will hit you if you're anywhere other than behind them. Staying behind them for too long results in them using the Spinning Axe attack to either hit you or force you to back away. Their Running Slash has a delay of two seconds between the start of its animation and the attack itself; pay careful attention and don't be fooled into dodging too early. Ranged weapons are largely useless against Executioners due to their ability to block damage from the front; however, interrupts and to a lesser extent staggers are very effective. Don't stand in front of them while they get back up after being knocked down, though - they'll often use their Headbutt the moment they're back on their feet.

  • Blocking damage: Executioner like few other enemies (Children of Rom, Labyrinth Warrior (Sword & Shield), Huntsman (Torch and Shield)) have blocking animation and will take reduced damage (and status build-up) when hit during the animation.

Strategy

  • They can be defeated using interrupts - with correct timing, this will place you at relatively low risk and is the quickest way to end the fight. The best times to interrupt them are during any hit of their combo attack and when they use Spinning Axe, Downward Slam or especially Running Slash attacks. You can use forward quicksteps to get behind them during their slower attacks, but watch out for their Spinning Axe attack, as trying to quickstep through this move is usually not possible If you are able to sneak behind them just as they finish a Spinning Axe, Jump Attack or Downward Slam, you'll have just enough time to hit them with a charged blow. Executioners are weak against bolt and blunt damage. Since Tonitrus deals both of these, it's the ideal Executioner-slayer - capable of killing them in a single combo. Weapons such as the Kirkhammer in its transformed state or the Hunter Axe's standard R2 are also effective. They are susceptible to poison and can be defeated at range with Poison Knives and some patience, but bear in mind that if they block your knives, they'll also take reduced poison buildup.

Notes

  • During Executioner grab attack animation, all damage can be negated if you are repeatedly pressing buttons (mashing).
  • Despite Executioner having 999 Rapid Poison resistance it is still vulnerable to such status.
  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]

Pungent Blood Cocktails don't attract this enemy, making the item ineffective.

Attack Patterns

Jump Attack Yes Quickstep sideways. Will hit you on the ground, but can roll away in time to avoid it.
Spinning Axe Yes 720-degree horizontal spin attack; quickstep backward.
Upward Chop Yes Fast close-range uppercut, sometimes followed by a jump attack; quickstep sideways or backward.
Headbutt Yes Near-instant, frontal, extremely close range. Avoid standing in front of them at close range.
Combo Yes Up to three hits; interrupt them or quickstep forward.
Grab Yes Two versions - stationary and running. Quickstep backward.
Running Slash Yes Runs forward several steps and performs a delayed counterclockwise chop; interrupt it or quickstep left.
Downward Slam Yes Frontal horizontal area attack that hits to either side of them; strafe or quickstep backward.
