In-Game Description

    A secret symbol left by Caryll, runesmith of Byrgenwerth.

    Several runes relate to "blood," including "Communion,"
    which raises the maximum number of blood vials one may
    carry.

    This rune represents the Healing Church and its ministers.
    Blood ministration is, of course, the pursuit of communion.

Overview

  • Caryll Runes are special items that you can attach to your character at the workshop in the Hunter's Dream. You can use up to four at onetime, and they provide a variety of very helpful effects. Use them tactically depending on the environments you plan to explore and the enemies you expect to face.
  • Before you can make use of Runes, you'll need the Rune Workshop Tool. This is found in Hemwick after defeating the Witch of Hemwick. After you have the tool, approach the Memory Altar in the Workshop and press X to equip Runes in your memory slots. You have three normal Memory Slots for basic runes, and a fourth "Oath Memory" slot. The basic runes are for use with normal Caryll Runes, and the Oath Memory slot is for Oath Runes only. Some runes have up to three different ranks, with higher ranked runes having more powerful effects.
  • Beware if you sell any Caryll Rune they will NOT respawn in New Game Plus.

Effects

  • The Communion Runes increase the number of Blood Vials you can hold. This is very helpful, particularly if you have difficulty making use of the Regain system. By default, each of your Blood Vials heals you for about 40% of your maximum health, but this effect can be increased using the Radiance Oath Rune; Communion and Radiance work very well together. If you often use Blood Bullets or simply don't like Regain, this can help. Having the extra vials can also be very useful to keep yourself topped-off if you like to rely on the Fool gem effect. On the other hand, if you keep the Pulsing effect on your weapons this Rune may be unnecessary.

  • Tier (3): Treasure in (Main Story): Iosefka's Clinic; chest inside Rear Operating Room on the 2F of the Clinic. If you need further assistance to find the rune, you can follow the Iosefka's Clinic Map.
  • Tier (4): Dropped by (Main Story): Celestial Emissary in Upper Cathedral Ward Lumenflower Gardens
  • Tier (5): Treasure in (Root Dungeons): Pthumeru Ihyll; rg56w9w8, F/R Pthumeru Ihyll L1, side area before layer lamp [tested May 12, 2020], pd5scth3, F/R/C Pthumeru Ihyll L1, side area before layer lamp [tested May 12, 2020]; alternatively found in False Depth Dungeon, xc284ugx, Pthumeru Ihyll L1, side area before layer lamp [tested May 12, 2020]

Notes

  • Unique Coffin Item Treasure (available) in (Root Dungeons): Communion +5 in Pthumeru Ihyll [All Layers] and Sinister Pthumeru Ihyll [All Layers], could be found in each bonus room and can only be looted once.   • Maximum number of Blood Vials that you can carry is 32, with equipped all three top Communion Caryll Runes (+5, +4, +3).
