Bloodletting Beast ❘ 獣血の主

Boss

Description

    In-game Name (multi-language)
English: Bloodletting Beast; Japanese: 獣血の主; German: Aderlassbestie; Spanish: Fera Sanguinária; French: Monstre de Saignée; Italian: Belva Massacratrice
    Internal Name
    Japanese: 始祖ビースト; Translation: Founder Beast

Preparation

  • Use an upgraded weapon with a damage bonus against beasts, such as the Saw Spear or Saw Cleaver; these weapons are also useful for reaching the Bloodletting Beast's head when in their transformed modes. The Bloodletting Beast is weakest to fire damage, so bring as many Fire Paper, Oil Urns and Molotov Cocktails as you can to this fight. Likewise, the Flamesprayer is highly effective against it, so stock up on Quicksilver Bullets, and, as per usual, enough Blood Vials to last the fight.

Overview

  • The Bloodletting Beast is an extremely aggressive boss that will take great effort to keep you at close range, and will constantly chase you before initiating some of its attacks. During the first phase it will primarily attack with its arms at mid range, but will also occasionally end a combo with a forward bite; from farther away it will use its Right Arm Punch or Lunging Swipe. The headless, parasite-infested Bloodletting Beast [Image] will perform a unique mid- to long-range projectile attack in which it launches a swarm of parasites that each hit individually and inflict rapid poison buildup; this technique is not used by the other version. It's possible to roll or quickstep directly through the beast's legs, but the only safe opportunity to do so is during the ground-punching combo; attempting this maneuver at any other time will usually trigger its close-range Double Arm Slam or Backstep Stomp.
  • Repeated blows to its head will injure it and cause it to stagger, allowing you to perform a frontal visceral attack; all four of its limbs can be injured as well, and will receive more damage afterwards. It will eventually heal any injuries to its limbs or head, but in the process it will make them vulnerable to injury again, giving you more opportunities to perform visceral attacks. During its second phase it will no longer restore its wounded extremities and will start using its Right Arm Slash and Flailing Combo; in addition, many of its previous attacks and combos will be extended, notably its Lunging Swipe. The parasite-infested Bloodletting Beast's missing head will be replaced by a gigantic parasite at the beginning of this phase; the parasite will perform basic forward bite attacks that inflict rapid poison build-up if they connect.
  • Main type of damage dealt by Bloodletting Beast is Blunt. Both variants have entirely blunt movesets. More information about main damage types for all bosses are on Boss Damage Types wiki page.

Strategy

  • An upgraded Flamesprayer coupled with Bone Marrow Ash will drastically reduce the Bloodletting Beast's health, and is the most effective way of handling it. This will also easily injure its body parts and stagger it, at which point you can follow through with a visceral attack. Throwing an Oil Urn at it will also boost the damage of the Flamesprayer, and you can also use them to boost the damage from your Molotovs or weapon after applying a Fire Paper. Be sure to disengage your target lock at close range, as locking on at this distance will result in extremely disadvantageous camera angles.

Environment

  • The boss area is an immense hemispherical chamber with eight large pillars lining its outer ring. These pillars can be destroyed by the Bloodletting Beast during its attacks and should not under any circumstance be used as cover. Although you will need to face the Bloodletting Beast out in the open, the massive size of the area affords plenty of room to maneuver which you will need to avoid The Bloodletting Beast's long reaching attacks.

Notes

  • Grab attacks can be escaped more quickly, taking less damage in the process, if you alternate pressing buttons like L2 and R2. Unlike in previous Souls titles any combination of buttons can be used for this technique.
  • Despite Bloodletting Beast having 999 Slow Poison & Rapid Poison resistances it is still vulnerable to such status.
  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • It is believed that headless form of Bloodletting Beast is Laurence and his head is skull in Grand Cathedral.
  • Physical gems dropped by Normal version and Heavy gems by Headless version
  • Headless Bloodletting Beast has move where it seems his neck stump vacuums up the ground. It isn't an attack, it's how he heals broken limbs.
  • You can hide from the Bloodletting Beast if you are far away and not moving (searching animation).
  • There is a mistake with one of Bloodletting Beast’s event script for breaking limbs. If you break its right leg, it will always play an animation for breaking it's arm.
  • Possible direct translations of the Japanese name "獣血の主" could be Master, Lord or Host of the Beast Blood. The same Kanji also appears in Micolash's Japanese name (悪夢の主、ミコラーシュ), or the Japanese name of Manus, Father of the Abyss in Dark Souls (深淵の主マヌス)

Bloodletting Beast

Pungent Blood Cocktails don't attract this enemy, making the item ineffective.

Cooperation & Boss' HP

  • Having a summoned ally doesn't alter the health or difficulty of the enemies you'll fight, but it does affect the bosses. To ensure they are still a challenge, boss health is increased to 1.5x when a second co-op player enters your world, and to 2.0x when a third enters.

Bloodletting Beast Weak Points

  • In Total and Part HP columns you will find value of the base HP without area multiplier. In Bloodborne each entity has own base HP (and NG) value which is then multiplied by the area (or part of the area) multiplier in which enemy or boss is in.
  • In the HP Percentage column you will find value of how much damage you need to deal to that body part to break it in percentage of total boss HP.
  • Enemies and Bosses can have multiple weak points which some are breakable (listed with multipliers) and take higher damage while broken while some will have only higher damage multipler the whole time (mainly listed in the notes section).
Body Part Total HP Part HP HP [%] Damage X Damage X
after breaking
Head 1700 100 5.88% 1 1.50
Arm 1700 150 8.82% 1 1.20
Leg 1700 300 17.65% 1 1.15
  • Notes: Repeated blows to its head will injure it and cause it to stagger, allowing you to perform a frontal visceral attack; all four of its limbs can be injured as well, and will receive more damage afterwards. It will eventually heal any injuries to its limbs or head, but in the process it will make them vulnerable to injury again, giving you more opportunities to perform visceral attacks. During its second phase it will no longer restore its wounded extremities.

Attack Patterns Phase One

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Right Arm Punch No Long build-up but near instant and far reaching punch with heavy tracking. Back up during its windup and quickstep right half a second after its fist unfurls.
Left Arm Grab No Frontal grab attack used at close range; bites and slams you if it successfully connects. Quickstep backward early as possible.
Double Arm Slam No Low reach attack used when standing near its legs. Quickstep backward.
Turnaround Swipe No Swipes with one arm while turning to face you when you are behind it. Quickstep back.
Backstep Stomp No Stomps to jump back and distance you from its legs. Quickstep back as it raises its left leg.
Left Arm Forward Swipe No Triggered when you stand under his left arm specifically and try to damage it, this attack is extremely dangerous because of its high damage and its basically nonexistent buildup. It is the equivalent of the forward punch, but deadlier. Try to never trigger it, but if it happens, quickstep to your left.
Parasite Swarm No Used only by the Bloodletting Beast (Parasites). Leans forward and releases a swarm of parasites that fly toward your location from long range; each hit inflicts rapid poison build-up. Quickstep forward under them or sideways two to three times.
  • Phase 1 Strategy: Before opening the door to its boss room, apply a Fire Paper to your weapon; once you have entered the room, the Bloodletting Beast will take a moment before beginning to attack. During this period you can throw a Molotov, Oil Urn or possibly both before it can approach you. It's too risky to attempt to stay behind it at this point, so keep a medium distance ahead of it while quickstepping and backing up from its moves. Due to its hunched posture you can hit its head with melee attacks to injure and stagger it, though you'll need to use a weapon with an extended reach to reliably hit it. Alternately, you can use throwing items and gunshots to reach it Your best opportunities to attack it in this phase are during the brief recovery periods after its attacks and while it occasionally circles you; even then you'll only be able to hit it once or twice before needing to quickstep out to evade its next attack.

Attack Patterns Phase Two

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Right Arm Slash No Uses the same buildup as the Right Arm Punch. Back up far as possible and quickstep a split second after its first unfurls.
Right Arm Slam No Charges forward with his body, in a very long buildup, and launch himself forward as he hits the ground with his forearm. This attack is extremely deadly, and avoiding it in Phase 2 becomes vitally important, as it almost always evolves in a two-attack combo. When it happens, the new attack is a further full-body forward launch where Bloodletting Beast will perform an identical slam with his left arm. Get caught in it, and you are dead. To survive, you can dodge through the arm before it hits the ground.
Three punch + finisher combo No Punches the ground in front of it three times and use a different finisher depending on your current position. If you are under him, he will do the arm slam; if you got far enough and are even just right behind him, he will use a right arm slash. This is the second most commonly triggered attack, and one of the most useful to exploit. To avoid it, dodge after the third punch and you will be safe from the slam; quickstep ahead and hit its leg.
Flailing Combo No Flails its arms wildly to hit multiple times. Quickstep back twice to avoid this.
  • Phase 2 Strategy: The Bloodletting Beast will roar, initiating the second phase of the fight. After this, it will no longer restore the defenses of its injured body parts, which in turn will remove the chance to stagger it; however, new openings to attack will appear during its extended combos. Quickstep through the first hit of each of its combos (past it or through the opening between its legs), then position yourself behind it, where you can strike while it is mid combo. Its Flailing Combo provides a long opening to do some damage as well; quickstep back to a safe distance and throw Oil Urns and Molotovs at it. In stark contrast to the first phase, standing ahead of it is now far more dangerous due to its longer combos and feints, and you'll need to circle behind it as often as possible.

Base Level: Blood Echoes, HP, Damage and Def. Multipliers

  • For enemies that also appear (or exclusively appear) in dungeons, their stats will be shown at the base level, because their exact stats at any given point are calculated from these base values. The basic formula is: Total Value = Base x A x B x C x D. Multipliers written down below were datamined directly from the game files. Multiplier A represents depth (1 - 5) of the chalice dungeon; multiplier B is layer (1 - 4) of the specific chalice dungeon; multiplier C is used when dungeon is Pthumeru Ihyll; multiplier D is for calculating blood echoes when additional curse rite is used.
