  • Watcher Chieftains: As slow as are they powerful, these brutes use purely melee attacks. They use a variety of combos, almost all with a slow build-up, making them easy to interrupt. If you stand a short distance away from them, they'll often use their Running Overhead Slam, which is one of their faster moves. It can be avoided by quickstepping to the side just as they begin running. While their club attacks are slow, swings from their lanterns are not, and they can hit you almost instantly during their Club & Lamp Combo so be careful if you're standing within the lantern's range. They'll tend finish the combo regardless of the distance you stand from them, so you may need to use a couple of quicksteps to evade the whole thing.
  • Merciless Watchers: Merciless Watchers share much in common with Watcher Chieftains, but they do bring a few new tricks to the table that you're going to need to watch out for. You'll also encounter a Watcher that comes armed with a scattergun that it will use to attack you from range, and will only switch to their clubs once you get close, or they get low on health. Their gunshots are predictable, due to the slow and consistent rate at which they're fired, and they are completely vulnerable as they reload after firing each shot so this is your best chance to close in and attack them. Saw-wielding watchers can use recovery items to fully restore their health, so you'll need to keep the pressure on them. Once you see them reach for their left side pocket, use transformation attacks to quickly break their super armor and prevent them from using the item.
  • Main type of damage dealt by Merciless Watchers & Watcher Chieftain is Club Watcher: Blunt, Saw Watcher: Physical, Shotgun Watcher: Blood. More information about main damage types for all bosses are on Boss Damage Types wiki page.

Strategy

  • Watcher Chieftain (Club & Lantern): Use a fire weapon, or apply some Fire Paper and aim to stay just outside their reach, so that they'll use one of their combos. Once they do, you can either try to interrupt one of the attacks, or wait for it to miss and begin an attack of your own as they recover. Against most of their attacks, such as the Two-hand Overhead Smash, you can also quickstep towards them to pass through the attack, leaving the Watcher open long enough for a quickly-charged attack from behind. This also takes the range of their attacks out of the equation; the Two-hand Overhead Smash has deceptively long range, and can easily hit you even after a backdash. As long as you are sure the attack they use isn't a combo-starter it's safe to quickstep through their attacks to position yourself at their back, and then land one or two quick attacks before moving away again to avoid their Backside Swing. Their slow movement speed also makes them quite susceptible to ranged attacks and you can use them to whittle down their health as they slowly close in on you.
  • Merciless Watchers (Scattergun, Club & Lantern): Since you'll have to contend with incoming fire while you approach this enemy, make sure to make use of any available cover in the area, and then close in while they're reloading. Once you're inside their gun range they will start attacking you with their lantern, but since this attack does a negligible amount of damage, you can just keep attacking them and easily recover the health. If your attacks are doing decent damage you can often kill them before they can pull their club out, and if you're having trouble doing that, you may want to use some Fire Paper to increase your damage when going up against these enemies Look to bait them into using their Two-hand Overhead Club Smash after they pull their club out by standing at the edge of their reach; once you see the attack coming, quickstep through it and attack them from behind.
  • Merciless Watchers (Saw): These enemies are aggressive and powerful, but their low mobility and complete lack of long-ranged attacks make them incredibly vulnerable to throwing items from a distance. From close range, they will use their Sawing Combo, Overhead Cleave & Sawing Combo, and Two-Hand Swings; all of their attacks should be avoided by quickstepping forward through them, or back away from them rather than to the sides because of their tracking. If you choose to backstep away from an attack, you'll often be able to interrupt the subsequent hits of their combo, and if you went forward through it, you'll have amble time to hit them in their back before they recover.

Environment

  • Boss room are two floor square rooms with staircase on each side. You can use staircase to divide Watchers and fight them one at the time. You can also use the pillars for cover if you need to create some breathing room or use items, but it's best to keep your hand-to-hand combat to the center of the room if possible, in order to ensure that you have enough room to maneuver.

Notes

  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • The Cursed Merciless Watchers drop a lot of different blood gems. Most of them outrank any other equivalent gem with their pure primary effect. See Cursed drop list made by Pure Souls below.

Merciless Watchers (Scattergun, Club & Lantern)

Pungent Blood Cocktails don't attract this enemy, making the item ineffective.
Shaman Bone Blades don't affect this enemy, making the item ineffective.

Cooperation & Boss' HP


  • Having a summoned ally doesn't alter the health or difficulty of the enemies you'll fight, but it does affect the bosses. To ensure they are still a challenge, boss health is increased to 1.5x when a second co-op player enters your world, and to 2.0x when a third enters.

The Cursed Merciless Watchers Boss Drop List by Pure Souls

  • The Cursed Merciless Watchers drop a lot of different blood gems. Most of them outrank any other equivalent gem with their pure primary effect, so this boss is very important for farming to most builds. After over 500 trials, we have put together a comprehensive list on what to expect when farming these valuable enemies in Chalice Dungeons.
  • Due to the unreliability of RNG, it’s possible (albeit VERY unlikely) that this list may be missing one or two gems in either our Pthumeru or Isz drop list.
