Winter Lantern ❘ ほおずき

Strong Enemy

Description

  • Grotesque creatures with few attacks but a lethal gimmick, Winter Lanterns will constantly damage you and build up your frenzy meter with their gaze. This ability will affect you from absurd distances and cannot be avoided by any means other than putting an obstacle between yourself and your target, making it almost impossible to approach these enemies without taking damage; due to the danger of frenzy build-up, a full inventory of Sedatives is highly recommended when facing them. At close range they will exclusively use a running grab with a very wide hitbox; this attack carries them forward up to two meters and has decent tracking, requiring you to dodge as late as possible in order to avoid being hit at the end of a quickstep. Winter Lanterns have below-average defense and completely predictable attack patterns, making them incredibly easy to interrupt and stagger.

Strategy

  • Try to minimize the damage and frenzy buildup from their gaze by approaching them behind cover to the fullest possible extent, then hitting them with gunfire or thrown weapons and ducking back to safety as they navigate to you. Their Chewing Grab is the only melee attack they have, so once you have a sense of its timing you can reliably interrupt it and finish them with a visceral attack; you may also quickstep behind them when they perform it and let loose with R1 combos or stagger them with charged R2 swings, but take care not to dodge too early - there is a full second of delay between the initiation of their grab and its first active frames. While it is possible to temporarily stop their gaze attack by stabbing them with a Shaman Bone Blade, doing so is largely a waste - it will not cause their gaze to damage other enemies, and you could just as easily defeat them with an R1 combo in the time it takes to use the blade.

Notes

  • Winter Lanters in Nightmare Frontier have 999 Slow Poison resistance.
  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • During Winter Lantern grab attack animation, damage can NOT be reduced by repeatedly pressing buttons (mashing).
  • If Winter Lanter does not notice you, you will not accumulate Frenzy build up, Blue Elixir is useful for closing the distance without being seen.
  • If you hit Winter Lantern with Shaman Bone Blade it will attack other enemies with its grab attack which is unable to successfully perform, frenzy build up effect will no longer target you but it does not inflict frenzy to other enemies.
  • How to kill - STR Build: Cannon; ARC build: Blacksky Eye tool; SKL build: Visceral ATKs [Video Guide]; BT build: Bone Marrow Ashed Evelyn
  • The Winter Lanterns' ranged Frenzy attack is not caused by the Winter Lantern itself, but rather a second, invisible enemy which is placed inside of the Winter Lantern. Through save editing, it is possible to make the two components hostile to each other, causing the Winter Lantern to inflict Frenzy on itself while repeatedly performing its grab attack directly forward. • There is clear evidence about lore connection between The Doll and Winter Lanterns [Image / Video]

Winter Lantern
Pungent Blood Cocktails don't attract this enemy, making the item ineffective.
Shaman Bone Blades affect this enemy, making it hostile to other enemies.

Attack Patterns

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Chewing Grab Yes Mid-range running grab with a wide hitbox that extends one meter to either side; quickstep forward past them as late as possible or backward twice as soon as they initiate it.
Malevolent Gaze No Inflicts constant damage and frenzy buildup while in their line of sight. Can only be avoided by breaking line of sight, but hitting them with a Shaman Bone Blade will temporarily negate it.
