Mad One ❘ 狂気者

Strong Enemy

Description

  • First encountered alongside The Witch of Hemwick, these scythe-wielding demons will appear elsewhere along the Charnel Lane after nightfall if you have at least 15 Insight, announcing their arrival with a flash of red light and a scream. These agile opponents attack with vertical and horizontal slashes and swift combos, but are incapable of reaching directly behind them. They have fairly high physical defense and aren't weak to elemental damage, but can be interrupted and staggered; their slow Overhead Slash is the best opportunity to do this and set them up for a visceral attack. While their individual swings aren't too difficult to avoid, their Scythe Combo can hit up to seven times and they will adjust to track you after each swing; in spite of the danger, this technique gives you seven opportunities to stagger them if you can get out of the way in time. The Mad Ones that appear with The Witch of Hemwick have much shorter detection range and move more slowly than those found outside: if they're killed, the witch will summon them in increasingly large numbers based on the amount of damage she's taken.

Insight Event

  • If you venture into the Hemwick with 15 or more Insight after nightfall, Mad Ones will crawl forth from their blood portals in the ground [gif]. These enemies are very fast and aggressive, so whenever possible you should try to attack them while they are still appearing, and always fight them away from other enemies.
Spawn Locations
First appears as you approach the bonfire surrounded by snipers, to the right of the tunnel exit after leaving Yharnam. Second appears as you begin travelling down the path to Hemwick Charnel Lane, near the first group of hunting dogs. Third appears as you approach the gate to Hemwick.
Fourth appears as you begin walking up the small set of stairs after the large statue at the beginning of Hemwick. Fifth appears as you approach the lift shortcut in Hemwick. Sixth appears as you are leaving the building which leads out on to the rooftops of Hemwick, adjacent the lake.

Rotted Offering in Chalice Dungeons

  • In Root Chalice Dungeons with rotted offering there is a 16% (base) chance for Eye Collectors to appear in non-Hintertomb and 24% (base) chance to appear in Hintertomb dungeons, these special Eye Collectors will summon Mad Ones. They can also appear in combination with Tomb Prospectors 17% (Eye Collector + Tomb Prospectors) in non-Hintertomb and 25% (Eye Collector + Tomb Prospectors) chance to appear in Hintertomb dungeons. Last combination is with Labyrinth Ritekeeper 17% (Eye Collector + Labyrinth Ritekeeper) in non-Hintertomb and 25% (Eye Collector + Labyrinth Ritekeeper) chance to appear in Hintertomb dungeons. Your points of Insight has no effect on summoning. (reloading the game reset the summoning of Mad Ones)

Strategy

  • Quickstep behind them and use R1 chains or charged attacks while they turn to face you; alternately, stand in front of them at a safe distance and bait their Overhead Slash, then interrupt it and perform a visceral attack. The Overhead Slash gives you enough time to quickstep forward and use a charge attack to stagger them, or to simply let loose with a chain of R1 swings; just be sure to save enough stamina to quickstep away if they manage to catch you in a combo. In general, it's best to stay behind them and strike from their blind spot. Try to avoid fighting any other enemies if you're already being attacked by a Mad One; their scythes inflict heavy damage and their swift combos can easily immobilize you, especially if you're being hit by other foes at the same time. When you see the telltale red glow which signals that a Mad One is about to appear, retreat to the safety of an area you've already cleared and eliminate it before advancing.
  • Dealing with special Eye Collector and Mad Ones she summons in Chalice Dungeon (rotted offering) can be difficult task. You can often find yourself overwhelmed, especially in tight corridors. The good strategy to solve this puzzle is to shoot into a nearby wall, Mad Ones will be attracted to it, leaving them and Eye Collector vulnerable. [video]

Notes

  • Preset Chalice Dungeons: None
  • If you have 0 Insight Mad Ones won't support The Witch of Hemwick in Hemwick Charnel Lane
  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • Mad One Glitch: Mad Ones are designed to appear only after nightfall, but a glitch exists that allows them to appear during the evening. To perform the glitch, you must have defeated the Blood-starved Beast, Vicar Amelia must still be alive, and you must have the 15 Insight normally required to trigger the Mad Ones. From the Cathedral Ward lamp, go up the elevator to the Church Workshop, then go down the tower and take the path that leads back into the Grand Cathedral via an elevator. When you come out the top of the elevator, run to Amelia and defeat her. After defeating her, do not touch Laurence's skull; instead, turn around to run to Hemwick. When you arrive in the small forested area leading to Hemwick, the Mad Ones will already have appeared without needing to rise up from the ground, and it will still be evening. The Mad Ones in Hemwick itself are not affected by this, nor are the ones summoned by the Witch of Hemwick. If the game is quit and reloaded, or the player returns to the Hunter's Dream, the Mad Ones will disappear and not spawn again until the normal conditions are met. [image 01, image 02; video]

Base Level: Blood Echoes, HP, Damage and Def. Multipliers

  • For enemies that also appear (or exclusively appear) in dungeons, their stats will be shown at the base level, because their exact stats at any given point are calculated from these base values. The basic formula is: Total Value = Base x A x B x C x D. Multipliers written down below were datamined directly from the game files. Multiplier A represents depth (1 - 5) of the chalice dungeon; multiplier B is layer (1 - 4) of the specific chalice dungeon; multiplier C is used when dungeon is Pthumeru Ihyll; multiplier D is for calculating blood echoes when additional curse rite is used.
