PSA: Opening Depth 5 FRC Dungeon Glyphs [Source]

  • The usual instructions for opening all the depth 5 FRC dungeon glyphs we use to farm blood gems are: First, finish all the story dungeons (skipping Hintertomb), which gives you all the depth 5 root chalices. Then, create any one depth 5 FRC root dungeon of your own: an FRC Isz requires the fewest materials. After that, you can open any depth 5 FRC glyph.

  • And this is totally true! But there are a couple shortcuts that are sometimes helpful. Many in the community know one or both of these, but for those who don’t, here you go:

  • Sinister root chalices “count” as root chalices.

  • To open a dungeon, you need to own a root chalice for that dungeon type. But sinister root chalices will do the trick. So you can open an Isz Root dungeon if you have the Sinister Isz Root chalice, even if you don’t have the regular Isz Root Chalice.

  • This can be a time-saver because the Lower Loran Root and Isz Root Chalices drop from the layer 3 bosses, Loran Darkbeast and Ebrietas, but the Sinister versions can be bought from the messengers earlier on layer 3, without having to face those bosses. If you’re rushing to get that uncanny Burial Blade in a Lower Loran root and wish you could skip the Darkbeast… you can! (The sinister trick doesn’t help with Pthumeru Ihyll, since the root chalice drops from the layer 2 boss, before you can get the sinister version.)

  • You yourself must create at least one dungeon with F, R and C offerings. BUT it doesn’t have to be all the same dungeon, and it doesn’t have to be depth 5.

  • To join a glyph with one or more of the special offerings Fetid, Rotted and Cursed, the game checks to make sure you have made at least one dungeon of your own with each offering on the glyph. It doesn’t matter if you made them all on the same dungeon, on different dungeons, on a totally different kind of dungeon than the one you are trying to join — you just have to have made them.
  • For example, once I got the the Sinister Isz and Lower Loran root chalices, I made three different dungeons: a Fetid Central Pthumeru Root (depth 2), a Rotted Lower Pthumeru Root (depth 3), and a Cursed Cursed and Defiled Root (depth 4). I could immediately join FRC Isz and Lower Loran root glyphs. I myself never made a depth 5 root dungeon of any kind; I had not finished any depth 5 story dungeons, and hadn’t even started Ihyll.

  • Making these depth-less-than-5 roots actually costs fewer special offering ritual materials than the depth 5. The combination I described used 2 Sage’s Wrists, 3 Inflicted Organs, and 3 Bastards of Loran — compare this to 6 Sage’s Hair, 6 Yellow Backbone and 3 Bastards of Loran for an Isz or Ihyll FRC. You don’t need any Red Jelly or Pearl Slug, either. Of course, you’ll need the lower-level Ritual Blood and Tomb Mold instead; at least some of these should be available for purchase at the messenger shop.

  • Of course, you don't have to open three separate root dungeons. If you like the simplicity of just opening one FRC root, there is one option outside depth 5: you can open an FRC Cursed and Defiled Root. (This is the only root dungeon outside depth 5 that can be Cursed.) This costs 3 Sage's Hair, 5 Inflicted Organs and 3 Bastards of Loran, more than the three-different-dungeons combination I described above, but less than a depth 5 FRC. This might be the best combination of simplicity and efficiency.

  • In case you are wondering: opening the regular Defiled Chalice story dungeon does NOT count as having made a Cursed offering. Although it uses Bastards of Loran and cuts your HP in half, the curse is considered part of the dungeon and not an “additional offering”. You’ll still need to make a Cursed root, along with Fetid and Rotted.

  • So there you have it! To join a glyph you need to OWN the right root chalice, and have MADE dungeons with the right offerings; but the sinister root chalice counts, and the dungeons you made offerings for can be one or multiple, and not necessarily depth 5. Happy spelunking!

  • What is a CRF dungeon?: Cursed, Rotten, Foetid Root dungeons - the hardest and funniest parts of Bloodborne and home to the sweetest strongest gems. However, to get to them you have to trudge through several boring preliminary dungeons. Here's the fastest way through!
  • Collect the materials listed for each layer before moving onto the next layer.
  • Important notes: If you only want to explore CRF Isz, you can skip straight to Isz after Ailing Loran. This is not recommended for any build. If you want to beckon people into your chalice to help, make sure you SET YOUR CHALICETO OPEN once it has been created.

Notes

Notes:
  • To make your first CRF you need to get the 3 'Yellow Backbones' from killing the The One Reborn in main game.
  • You should create a CRF Isz as it uses less materials

IMPORTANT:
  • You only need to create ONE CRF root dungeon of ANY type in order to search for others using glyphs. You DO NOT need to create an Ihyll or Loran CRF root chalice.
  • You will not automatically have strong gems after making a CRF chalice; you have just started the CRF fun by creating your first. Now the farming and spelunking begins.

"No Hintertombs?":
  • The only reason to do Hintertombs is if you want the Madman's set or if you want to see every boss in the game

Chalice Speed Run Guide by rocksolid9238

This is A LOT of info that some of you probably already know but now it’s all in 1 giant post step by step. You can YouTube everything in here to make things easier for yourself. I left out Hintertomb because it doesn't apply when going for the best gems and runes. You can completely skip over it. Also and most importantly you only need to make 1 root chalice. The first 8 are all NON ROOT. Don't waste any materials on Root chalices it's not necessary except for the very end when making a F/R/C. Lets get started.
Depth 1 Pthumeru: 2 ritual blood 1’s
↓
  • Defeat Blood Starved Beast to obtain. Buy 2 RB1’s at bath or get in Old Yarnham. Simple
Depth 2 Central Pthumeru: 6 ritual blood 2’s
↓
  • Easy farm sac guys in layer 3 of Depth 1 and snag the Ritual Blood 2’s you need. Simple
Depth 3 Lower Pthumeru: 9 ritual blood 3’s
↓
  • Easy farm sac guys in layer 3 of Central and snag the Ritual Blood 3’s you need. Simple, now while in layer 2 of Lower you need to grab the Arcane Haze Extractor in the bonus room after the lever door before the boss in a Gold Sarcophagus. When you enter this bonus door a sac guy will be guarding a ladder. Equip Eye Runes and kill him as many times as you need to collect enough RB4's. To proceed you will need a total of 18 RB4’s to complete everything moving forward.
Depth 4 Ailing Loran: 9 ritual blood 4’s / 4 Coldblood Flower
↓
  • Defeat Amygdala to obtain. Purchase Coldblood Flower at insight bath. The RB4’s you should have farmed from Central layer 3 as stated above. Now after you hit the lever on layer 3 you'll head into the bonus room and find 4 Bastard of Loran. 2 in a chest and 2 in a Gold Sarcophagus. While in here you will also grab 6 Blooming Coldblood Flower which you will need for Lower Loran.
Depth 4 Defiled Chalice: 9 ritual blood 4’s / 2 Bastard of Loran / 22 Arcane Haze
↓
  • You should have the RB4’s and the BOL to open this at this point. Use the Arcane Haze Extractor to get your 22 AH. While you’re here all you need to do is focus on beating it. It sucks ass.
Depth 5 Lower Loran: 9 ritual blood 5’s / 4 Blooming Coldblood Flower
↓
  • You should have enough Blooming Coldblood Flower from Layer 3 Ailing Loran to open this. Now farming RB5’s you'll want to QUICKSEARCH an Ailing Loran and run across layer 1 into a room with a werewolf and a tiny little chest. In it will be 2 RB5’s. After you should delete this chalice and QUICKSEARCH again you don't need to use your materials to create it yourself. Rinse and Repeat. You will need a total of 31 RB5’s to unlock everything.
Depth 5 Great Isz: 9 ritual blood 5’s / 3 Pearl Slugs / 25 Arcane Haze
↓
  • You should have enough RB5’s from farming Layer 1 Ailing Loran. Pearl Slugs can be purchased at the Insight bath. The most important farming layer is layer 3 of this dungeon. You will find 3 Yellow Backbone in a chest near a group of scorpions. Also in a room near the rolling bolder you will find the jackpot. 2 Red Jelly 6 Sage Hair and 5 Tomb Mold 5’s. You will need these to complete the F/R/C.
Depth 5 Pthumeru Ihyll: 9 ritual blood 5’s / 4 Red Jelly / 1 Living String / 25 Arcane Haze
↓
  • To unlock this dungeon you will need to head into the campaign. You should already have the RB5’s if not farm them. You should already have 2 Red Jelly from the layer 3 Isz. You can get 2 more in the 1st floor lecture building in a chest at the end of the hallway. The Living String you get by killing the giant eyeball in Mensis. Technically you only need to beat layer 2 boss and you’re done. But go beat the queen and hopefully she hooks you up with a Blood Rock.
Now you have done the hard part beating these 8 CD’s. The final step is creating an F/R/C. All you need to do is create 1 FRC and this will allow every CD in the game searchable as long as you've already obtained it. The easiest to unlock is the Isz FRC.
Depth 5 Isz Root F/R/C: 13 ritual blood 5’s / 5 Tomb Mold 5’s / 3 Pearl Slugs / 1 Red Jelly / 6 Sage Hair / 6 Yellow Backbones / 3 Bastard of Loran
-
  • You should already have your RB5’s TM5’s and your 6 Sage hair. You can buy the 3 Pearl Slugs and the 1 Red Jelly at the insight bath. This leaves you to get the 6 Yellow Backbones and the 3 Bastard of Loran. You will just have to quick search an Ailing Loran again and speed run to Layer 3 along with quick searching the Isz again and speed running to Layer 3. It’s really simple to beat these bosses again. Once you do this you will have all the materials listed above to create the FRC.
