Moon Presence ❘ 月の魔物

Boss

Description

    In-game Name (multi-language)
English: Moon Presence; Japanese: 月の魔物; German: Präsenz des Mondes; Spanish: Presencia Lunar; French: Présence Lunaire; Italian: Presenza della Luna
    Internal Name
Japanese: 悪夢を継ぐもの(第2形態); Translation: Nightmare Inheritor (second form)
  • The Moon Presence, the secret Final Boss of Bloodborne. Of all significant beings and events in Bloodborne, this is the most mysterious. The Moon Presence has caused many players to leave Bloodborne with a feeling of discomfort, as if they came so close to the Truth and yet were still so far away. The Hunter encounters the Moon Presence if they refuse Gehrman's offer of mercy, and defeat him. The Moon Presence descends from the Blood Moon itself, even its name implies a deep connection to the Blood Moon. As we know, the Blood Moon rises whenever the line between man and beast is blurred.
  • When humans succumb to the Scourge of the Beast, the Blood Moon rises... or perhaps it's the other way around. Perhaps it's that the Blood Moon rises, causing those infected with the Scourge to transform into Beasts. At the beginning of the game, we find a note in the back of the Hunter's Dream, presumably left for the Hunter: To escape this dreadful Hunter's Dream, halt the source of the spreading scourge of beasts, lest the night carry on forever." Now recall Gehrman's words to the Hunter after the defeat of Father Gascoigne: "The moon is close. t will be a long hunt tonight." The Blood Moon, or rather the Moon Presence, is the source of the Scourge.
    [The Paleblood Hunt by Redgrave]

Preparation

  • As this fight will take place immediately after defeating Gehrman, with no rest period in between, you might want to quit to the title screen and reload your save file to exit the boss area and access the shops. Purchase as many Blood Vials and Quicksilver Bullets as you can carry, and bring plenty of Bone Marrow Ash: it's also worthwhile to create some Blood Bullets as well since the boss fight takes place in the same area and you can purchase more Blood Vials to replace those used restoring your health afterward. The Moon Presence has equal defensive values with no strengths or weaknesses, and cannot be interrupted, so feel free to bring your favorite weapon combination. The Cannon can be extremely helpful for this fight due to its ability to instantly stagger the boss. Set your weapons with as many attack bonus gems as you can fit, and consider equipping the Clawmark and Oedon Writhe runes to improve the effectiveness of your visceral attacks.

Overview

  • The Moon Presence is an extremely aggressive opponent from the start, and will alternate between putting intense pressure on you at close range and leaping backward to evade your attacks and reposition itself for another strike. Dealing enough damage to its head will knock it into a stagger state and enable you to follow hrough with a visceral attack; repeated blows to its arms will injure them and cause it to stumble for a few seconds, setting it up for further combos. Any injured part of its body will take drastically increased damage, including its head; it will eventually repair this damage with its Regeneration move, but this will also allow you to stagger it again with focused attacks on its face. During the first Phase it will use only physical attacks with its tentacles and arms; its combos and individual swings are very swift and can be exceedingly difficult to avoid, but it has a few slower moves that leave openings for you to counterattack.
  • The Moon Presence becomes far more dangerous during Phase 2, at which point it will begin using a gaze attack that instantly reduces your health to 1, regardless of how far away you are from it; it will also try to disable your healing with wide-ranging area attacks and will continue to pummel you with melee combos.
  • Main type of damage dealt by Moon Presence is Physical. Raining crap deals arcane damage. 1 HP AoE attack technically deals around 28000 physical, fire and bolt damage (in NG). More information about main damage types for all bosses are on Boss Damage Types wiki page.

Strategy

  • Aim for its head at every possible opportunity and if you're having trouble hitting it with the Cannon, wait until it uses its Overhead Whip and blast it in the face during its recovery. Take advantage of the damage bonus against ts injured head or limbs and attack these parts of its body until it repairs them, and above all, don't get greedy with your melee attacks - be absolutely sure to leave yourself enough stamina to get out of the way after a combo. In general, the best place to stand is directly behind the Moon Presence; you'll have to watch out for its Spinning Whip, but will be safe from its much more dangerous combo attacks. When it uses its Doom Gaze, dash in and hit it as many times as you can before It recovers - doing so will not only inflict damage, but restore most of your health via regain.

Environment

  • You'll face the Moon Presence in the same meadow as Gehrman, so avoid being backed into a corner and make full use of the open space so that you have room to maneuver freely. In this case, however, you may also choose to back the boss into one of the corners at the base of the tree or in front of the gate if its constant backsteps are making it difficult to hit; while you'll suffer certain disadvantages in this position, so will the boss, and its large size will restrict its movement in the corners while leaving you just enough room to evade.

Notes

  • Moon Presence is exception and is completely immune to Slow Poison & Rapid Poison, despite that all entities which have 999 Slow Poison & Rapid Poison resistances are still vulnerable to such status.
  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • Cooperation: You can coop in Hunter's Dream for Gehrman, The First Hunter and Moon Presence bosses, once you open Gehrman as boss.
  • Moon Presence, the Great One. In order to unlock this boss fight you need to collect three "One Third of Umbilical Cord" and consume them; refuse Gehrman's offer and defeat him.
  • Only The Moon Presence, Mergo's Wet Nurse & Orphan of Kos [DLC] trigger "Nightmare Slain" instead of common "Prey Slaughtered".
  • When you beat Moon Presence, immediately after you get the Blood Echoes, use a Bold Hunter's Mark. You will be at the dream without having entered a new game. If you do it too early, all that happens is that you have to fight the boss again. If you want to go to new game + eventually, just walk into the middle of the arena. However, this does not work in cooperation because your Cooperator will prevent you from using Bold Hunter's Mark.
  • A German Spy: Name of the Moon Presence is Flora [Doll's Prayer] and is female, source

Cooperation & Boss' HP

  • Having a summoned ally doesn't alter the health or difficulty of the enemies you'll fight, but it does affect the bosses. To ensure they are still a challenge, boss health, showed in table above, is increased to 1.5x when a second co-op player enters your world, and to 2.0x when a third enters.

Moon Presence Weak Points

  • In Total and Part HP columns you will find value of the base HP without area multiplier. In Bloodborne each entity has own base HP (and NG) value which is then multiplied by the area (or part of the area) multiplier in which enemy or boss is in.
  • In the HP Percentage column you will find value of how much damage you need to deal to that body part to break it in percentage of total boss HP.
  • Enemies and Bosses can have multiple weak points which some are breakable (listed with multipliers) and take higher damage while broken while some will have only higher damage multipler the whole time (mainly listed in the notes section).
Body Part Total HP Part HP HP [%] Damage X Damage X
after breaking
Head 1020 100 9.80% 1 1.5
Front Leg 1020 150 14.71% 1 1.5
Rear Leg1020 200 19.61% 1 1.5
  • Notes: Dealing enough damage to its head will knock it into a stagger state and enable you to follow hrough with a visceral attack; repeated blows to its arms will injure them and cause it to stumble for a few seconds, setting it up for further combos. Any injured part of its body will take drastically increased damage, including its head; it will eventually repair this damage with its Regeneration move, but this will also allow you to stagger it again with focused attacks on its face.

Attack Patterns Phase One

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Overhead Whip No Forward overhead whip attack; quickstep backward one to two times.
Spinning Whip No Two-hit 360-degree spin attack used when you're behind it; repositions it facing you at a distance. Quickstep backward when it crouches.
Jumping Slam No Long-range jump attack; quickstep sideways one to two times.
Charging Combo No Forward dash combo with heavy momentum; quickstep sideways or diagonally backward.
Seeking Combo No Same as Charging Combo but with strong tracking; will hold its head before performing this version. Quickstep backward until it stops attacking.
Regeneration No Holds its head and emits white particles of energy. Repairs head and limb damage, but doesn't actually restore HP.
  • Phase 1 Strategy: Sideways quicksteps are the best way to avoid the Moon Presence's Phase 1 attacks; you'll also need to quickstep forward in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction in order to get around it and strike from out of reach of its arms. Aim for its head when it provides you with openings to do so - the best chance during this Phase is after avoiding its Overhead Whip. When it uses this move, wait until the first of its tentacles touches the ground in front of it, then quickstep forward and unleash a strong attack; this is also the best time to shoot it in the head with the Cannon if using the associated strategy as it will be unable to dodge the shot. Do your best to stay beside or behind it and target its arms when you can't reach its head; it will try to hit you with its Spinning Whip in these positions, but gives just enough warning that you can quickstep backward and out of the way. Be careful not to use up all your stamina on combo attacks - it's only safe to hit the boss with one or two heavy swings at a time before it counterattacks or leaps away from you.

Attack Patterns Phase Two

Key Attack Interrupt Notes
Doom Gaze No Holds its head and releases a flash of light that instantly reduces your HP to 1 regardless of range. Cannot be dodged or blocked; run toward it immediately and attack its head with R1 combos to regain your health.
Numbing Shower No Frontal spherical area attack with a five-meter radius; rains blood that temporarily blocks your ability to use Blood Vials if any of it touches you. Quickstep backward two to three times.
Numbing Cloudburst No Summons small clouds from the ground which explode in showers of blood; temporarily blocks your ability to use Blood Vials if it connects. Dash through the clouds to dissipate them or out of range to avoid the blood.
Desperation Combo No Forward running attack with flailing arms; quickstep sideways or diagonally backward.
  • Phase 2 Strategy: When you reduce the Moon Presence's health to 70% it will become even more aggressive and begin using its Phase 2 moveset, including the potentially lethal Doom Gaze attack. At this point, keep it at mid to long range, but don't get too far away - the Doom Gaze actually offers the best opportunity to attack its head, and you'll regain most of your lost health in the process. Alternately, you can use its incredibly long recovery after this attack as a chance to blast its head with the Cannon and perform a visceral attack; this will still recover a substantial amount of your health and can potentially inflict far more damage. You can either bait this attack exclusively by staying at long range, or move in a little closer and look for other opportunities; regardless, continue to dodge its melee attacks with sideways quicksteps and attack during its recovery periods.
