Basic Information

  • To begin Dan Koyster made a video to showcase this exploit - Consumable Dupe (Safe Method - Current Patch)

  • A slightly updated version of the item dupe that's been around since the original Dark Souls, except without the risk of actually using the item! For the original discoveries see type 2 dupe in this article on speedsouls.
  • Items you can dupe:
  • Coldblood (all variants)
  • Madman's Knowledge
  • Great One's Wisdom
  • Third Umbilical Cord (cannot be stored)
  • Red Brooch
  • Tear Stone
  • Gold Pendant
  • Blood Dreg
  • Vermin (menu cancel only)
  • and any other consumable that can be equipped...
  • Requirements:
  • An item you want to dupe, preferably one that can be put into storage.
  • A secondary item to dupe the first with, (preferably with infinite use such as; Hunter's Mark, Hand Lantern etc).
  • Steps to execute the glitch:
  • 'Use' the consumable, but cancel it.
  • Place the consumable in storage.
  • While walking; use a blood vial, then press 'use' on a secondary item to re-use the first.
  • Detailed Steps::
  • Drop Item Cancel - 'Use' the consumable you plan on duping, but walk off a ledge to cancel the actual consumption of the item. The ledge drop has to be high enough that your character staggers slightly upon landing, -this can be tested by sprinting off the ledge and seeing if landing the sprint is interrupted by the drop, even slightly.
  • (alt). Menu Item Cancel - Press SQUARE then X in very quick succession at the storage box to 'use' the item with the storage menu open. If you leave the menu too quickly the item will be consumed. This method is risky and barely faster than drop cancelling, however items that don't allow walking while being consumed will need to be cancelled this way, such as Vermin.
  • Place the item in storage to prevent it from actually being consumed later. You can store your blood vials as they aren't required and will just be wasted. If the item you wish to dupe is in a stack of multiple, you need to store all of that stack in order to not use any of them when duping. Also don't use any other item before duping as it will change the item you dupe to that last used item instead.
  • While walking; press TRIANGLE to use a blood vial (or if empty; get the confused animation), then after a short wait, repeatedly tap X on the secondary item (e.g. Hunter's Mark). You have to hit X around 40 frames* into the animation to get the dupe. This is trial & error and takes practice!
  • Considerations:
  • You need to be fast walking (left analog stick fully forward) to get the dupe consistently.
  • For best results; the second item (e.g. Hunter's Mark) should be used from either the main Inventory menu or Personal Effects (right touchpad click).
  • If you fail the dupe and get the Hunter's Mark prompt, you will have to start the process over again. If you failed but didn't get the prompt you can just attempt duping again from the blood vial animation. /see Non-consecutive dupe/
  • The glitch will only duplicate the last item in a stack of multiple items. Also if you 'use' a stacked item and don't store all of them before duping, the other items in the stack will get consumed -as they normally would without the glitch.
  • If the item you want to dupe has a confirmation box before using it, such as the Red Jeweled Brooch; you only have to get the box to appear to count as 'using' it. When you successfully dupe it the confirmation box will reappear and selecting 'Yes' then pressing SQUARE is required to use that duped item.
  • As well as using Blood Vial/TRIANGLE input to get the dupe, you can also use the Blood Bullets tap/D-Pad UP to dupe the previously cancelled item. This is less preferable however as you need to be holding the left analog stick forward at the same time, but is still a viable method of performing the dupe nonetheless.
  • You can practice the timing with the Hand Lantern/Tiny Music Box/Monocular to save dealing with storage and item cancels each time. Just equip the Hand Lantern/Tiny Music Box/Monocular in your quick items, press SQUARE to use, press TRIANGLE for vial, then dupe as normal. You'll get feedback from the item if you were successful (such as playing the music box), and if not you can repeat the steps quicker.
  • Consecutive dupe (timing varies):
  • Consecutive duping is when you dupe off of the consumable animation, the timing for this will vary depending on what consumable is being used. For example a Throwing Knife animation lasts much less than an Antidote animation. If you fail a consecutive dupe and use the secondary item (Hunter's Mark) you will have to start again, if you didn't use the secondary item you can try non-consecutive duping.
  • Non-consecutive dupe:
  • Non-consecutive duping is when you use a blood vial animation(or if empty on vials, the confused animation) to dupe the item last used (e.g. coldblood), then wait for that item consumption to finish and use a blood vial/confused animation to dupe again. If you fail and use the secondary item (Hunter's Mark), you will have to start the whole process again from the beginning. If you pressed X too soon you will hear the sound effect that corresponds to not being able to use an item, -however you can repeat the vial animation and dupe as long as the secondary item doesn't get used.
  • Timing References:
  • Blood Vials - as left hand moves left to reset. (40 frames*)
  • Empty Vials('Confused' animation) - as left shoulder pivots left to reset. (40 frames*)
  • Coldblood/Insight consumables (consecutive dupe) - right hand moves below the elbow. (60 frames*)
  • *All mention of animation frame timings is speculative, measurements were analysed from footage but without a way of concurrently reading controller inputs the measurements could be off by 1 or 2 frames.
