Scholar (Bare Hands) ❘ 学徒

Regular Enemy

Description

  • Found exclusively in the Lecture Building, these mutated students have extremely high physical defense, but their low health means they are easily dispatched with a couple of basic R1 attacks. They are highly weak against elemental damage, particularly fire, so it's worth equipping elemental weapons, or using Molotovs from range to kill them as quickly as possible. Empty-handed Scholars attack by stretching their arms, and can reach you with their melee swings from up to five meters away. Their slow movements and long recovery periods, however, offer plenty of time to strike them safely. They use both horizontal and vertical swings, and their overhead slams will flatten you if they connect, so stay well out of their range and move in to hit them once they miss.
  • When fighting them in groups, make sure to pay attention to ones at the back of the pack, because they can often still reach you due to the range of their melee strikes. Because so many of them will be able to attack you when they're grouped up, it's dangerous to fight them at close range unless you're taking them out in one hit. If you're not able to kill them in a single hit, fall back and use Molotovs to take them out from safety In spite of their gooey consistency, they are vulnerable to both interrupts and staggers, but their attacks can be somewhat unpredictable and difficult to anticipate, so it's better to conserve your bullets for more difficult foes.
  • Scholars carrying flasks will use them to throw acid at you from long range and perform wide-ranging area attacks up close. When they rear up and hold their flasks to their mouths, they'll release a circular pool of acid on the ground around them; this move leaves more than enough time for you to quickstep behind them for a charged R2 strike. They will also splash acid in a 180-degree frontal arc with their flasks. After throwing two to four acid projectiles at you, they'll stop to refill their flasks by vomiting into them, offering an opportunity to hit them before they can attack again.

Strategy

  • Bait their attacks from at least five meters away, and then quickstep toward them while they recover and hit them with an R1 chain or a charged R2 swing, which will often be enough to finish them off. Alternately, you can jab them with a torch or blast them with the Flamesprayer for easy kills. Avoid rushing carelessly into the midst of large groups of these enemies, particularly in the large lecture theater; while they are little threat on their own, their long reach makes it very difficult to get away when several of them are hitting you at once. Because they turn quite slowly and their attacks take a while to recover, you can run around the entire group and hit the ones at the back before they can react, and then repeat this process as necessary to keep them from being able to mount an offensive.

Notes

  • Scholar (Bare Hands) is considered a kin even though it is not listed as such in the official guide. [tested]
  • All enemies and bosses (except hunter enemies) have 999 frenzy resistance, despite that they are still vulnerable to such status. The only way to see it without modding is to use Shaman Bone Blade on enemy inflicting frenzy to attack others. [test video]
  • During Scholar (Bare Hands) grab attack animation, 100% - 75% damage can be reduced if you are repeatedly pressing buttons (mashing).
  • Scholar on ceiling has no drops and lower HP in Lecture Building 1F HP 147, in Lecture Building 2F 437 HP
  • Despite their unconventional attacks they can be easily parried as there is wide parry window.

Scholar (Bare Hands)
Pungent Blood Cocktails don't attract this enemy, making the item ineffective.
Shaman Bone Blades affect this enemy, making it hostile to other enemies.
