Ritual Material

In-Game Description

Special material used in a holy chalice ritual.

The immense brain that Mensis retrieved from the nightmare
was indeed lined with eyes on the inside, but they were of
an evil sort, and the brain itself was terrible rotten.

But even still, it was a legitimate Great One, and left a relic.
A living relic, at that, which is a precious thing indeed.

Overview

  • Conducting a ritual to create a Chalice Dungeon is fairly straightforward; when you've got a Chalice and the required ritual materials, approach a Chalice altar and select the Chalice Ritual option. In the Chalice Ritual menu you'll see the list of all your collected chalices in the large window on the left of your screen. Along the top of this window are four tabs, one for each class of Chalice, which affects the area that labyrinth will be set in. The central window shows the details of the ritual, including the Depth of the created dungeon, which is essentially the difficulty level, with 1 being the lowest and 5 being the maximum.

The depth affects the required level for certain Basic and Rite Materials. For example, Depth 2 labyrinths will require Ritual Blood (2) and Tomb Mold (2), which can be acquired from the corresponding depth labyrinths or from certain chests and enemies from the previous Depth. The cost in Blood Echoes is also shown, along with the required materials, both for the ritual and any possible Additional Rites. If you have all of the required materials and are certain you want to use them, select the Conduct Ritual option to create the dungeon.
  • Basic and Rite crafting materials can be found mainly in the Chalice Labyrinths from loot chests or enemy drops, with the rarer ones required to craft specific labyrinths also found in the main quest. Progressing though the game, acquiring Hunter Badges, defeating bosses and clearing labyrinths will also unlock certain Basic Materials in both Bath Messenger Blood Echoes and Insight shops in the Hunter's Dream. Ritual Blood and Tomb Mold basic materials have a numerical value in brackets next to them. These correspond to the depth/difficulty of a labyrinth, and can also be found on the same depth or one depth below. The highest level of both of these items (5), can be purchased from the Bath Messengers since Patch v1.07 (available on NG+).
  • When using a Root Chalice to create randomly generated dungeons you'll usually have the possibility to conduct Additional Rites, at the cost of more materials. These rites add effects that can drastically change the conditions within each dungeon, usually making them much more challenging. They do carry some reward, however, usually in the form of increased item drops and Blood Echoes. There are four possible Additional Rites: Fetid Offering, Rotted Offering, Curse & Sinister Bell.

Availability

  • Dropped by (Main Story): Brain of Mensis [100%]. The Brain of Mensis hangs in the tower in the middle of the bridge between the keep and Mergo's Loft in Nightmare of Mensis. It will continuously assault you with its gaze while you are outside the castle. You can approach it on an upper section of the bridge and strike it with ranged attacks, but it is completely invincible at this point and cannot be defeated by normal means.

To destroy the brain, you'll need to jump out of one of the shortcut elevators to access a hidden path and pull the lever at the other end; this will release the chains from which it's suspended and drop it out of the tower, freeing the area from its damaging gaze. After the boss fight with Micolash, a cage elevator will descend to the prison area on the ground floor directly below the lift bridge; by riding this elevator, you can reach the now-helpless brain and destroy it. It will no longer be able to use its gaze attack after falling from the tower and has no other means of fighting back, so you can simply walk up and beat it to death with no opposition.
  • Sold by: Insight Bath Messengers [Hunter's Dream]

Notes

  • Available for purchase after killing Brain of Mensis.
  • If you kill Brain of Mensis with poison (e.g. using Poison Knives) it won't drop the Living String, you will then have to reload the game and kill it again in order to drop it.
