Basic Information

  • A short playable demo of The Old Hunters was made available for attendees of the 2015 Tokyo Game Show. Players choose one of three premade characters and play through a small section of the Hunter's Nightmare, up to the Ludwig boss fight. This demo was not intended for retail release and features alternative enemy and item placement. These images were taken from one video uploaded to the 4gamerMovie Youtube channel, and two videos from Gamersyde video 01 and video 02. These videos were recorded using a camera pointed at a monitor on the show floor, and the images in this article have been cropped and perspective corrected, leading to some blurring and interlacing.

  • UPDATE: You can turn the Hunter's Nightmare area into the TGS mode with save-editing. All you need to do is just turn eventflag 13400999 on. Your respawn point changes, all lamps are gone, some enemies and items change. Ludwig doesn't go into phase 2 and when you kill him it fades to black and plays his "Ah, you were by my side, all along" line before booting back to the main menu.

The Old Hunters Trailer

  • The trailer begins with the prayer heard when the player character is taken to the Hunter's Nightmare. However, the version used in the trailer is longer, with the line "..a call to the bloodless, wherever they be" played over a shot of the Surgery Altar. This line is used in-game as part of the ambient chanting in the Fishing Hamlet, but not as part of the prayer.
  • The trailer includes the cutscene that plays as the Red Moon descends over Yharnam. The version used in the trailer has a filter applied to it that simulates the look of old film, with scratches and dust spots.
  • The three variant Nightmare Hunters in the river of blood. Only the one weilding the Beast Cutter appears here in the release version.
  • Gehrman's boss fight model is seen approaching the Fishing Hamlet, an event that otherwise has no visual representation.
  • Lady Maria is shown sitting alive in her chair rather than dead, as she is in the release version.

The Old Hunters Promotional Images

  • Old Hunter Yamamura the Wanderer being summoned in Old Yharnam using the Old Hunter Bell. This never happens in the release version, with Yamamura only available for summoning in Yahar'gul and the Research Hall.
  • Valtr overlooking Hemwick Charnel Lane. In the release version, he remains in the Forbidden Woods windmill until death.
  • The red-eyed Nightmare Hunter with the Beasthunter Saif shown in areas he does not appear in the release version.
  • A Church Servant in the Research Hall. The only one present in the release version is not in this location.

Menu, Stats & Equipment

  • The demo begins by asking the player to choose one of three premade characters, called 'Charred Hunter', 'Harrowed Man' and 'Mensis Scholar'. All are level 75 and begin in the same place. The video recordings referenced use the Harrowed Man and Charred Hunter. The Harrowed Man wears the complete Harrowed Set. He is equiped with a Simon's Bowblade +8 and a Kirkhammer +8 as his right-hand weapons, a Fist of Gratia +8 and a Torch as his left-hand weapons, and no quick item. He also has the Tier 3 Clockwise Metamorphosis, Tier 1 Anticlockwise Metamorphosis and Tier 3 Communion runes.
  • The Charred Hunter is equipped with the Beast Cutter, Beasthunter Saif, Hunter Pistol and Torch. They wear the Charred Hunter Set with the Tomb Prospector Hood, and have Delayed Molotovs as their quick item. The Mensis Scholar is equipped with a Threaded Cane and a Rosmarinus. They wear the Student Set (cape variant) with the Mensis Cage, and are equipped with the Blacksky Eye, Augur of Ebrietas and A Call Beyond as their quick items.

Exploring Differences from Retail Build

  • The chosen character starts in the area in between the Hunter's Nightmare and Nightmare Church lamps, just prior to climbing the ladder. There are two crows present where there are two dogs in the retail version, and no crows in the pit at the base of the ladder, or on the beams. The Nightmare Hunter with the Beast Cutter is present, and has red eyes - however, he does not drop Vermin upon death.
  • The corpse with Frenzied Coldblood (9) in the retail version instead has 3 Oil Urns. Attempting to travel away from Ludwig reveals that there is a fog wall in the cave leading to the first half of the blood river. This dead end also contains a corpse with 5 Delayed Molotovs.
  • The river of blood leading to Ludwig contains a large number of Beast Patients and two Nightmare Hunters, one with a Boom Hammer and one with a Beast Cutter, both of whom have red eyes but do not drop Vermin. The Beast Patients and Nightmare Hunters fight each other as normal.
  • A Nightmare Executioner guards the Nightmare Church. Inside there is no lantern, and no Wandering Madness at the base of the stairs. The item in the distance is Oil Urn x4.
  • The corpse near the entrance to Ludwig has 4 Blood Vials instead of 6, and the corpse which has the Butcher Set in the retail version instead has 10 Blood Vials. The corpse by the large statue has 10 Quicksilver Bullets while the retail version has a Madman's Knowledge.
  • Old Hunter Yamamura is available to summon for the Ludwig boss fight, but he does not behave as though he is a member of the League, as his summon spot is blue and the Impurity rune is not required to summon him. Valtr is in this place in the retail version. He is equipped as he is in the retail version, with the Chikage and Piercing Rifle.
  • Ludwig is present, but only has his 'Ludwig, the Accursed' phase - reducing him to half HP does not cause him to change to his 'Ludwig, the Holy Blade' phase. However, upon defeat, the line 'ああずっと、ずっと側にいてくれたのか' ('Ah, you were by my side, all along') plays, teasing that there is more to come.
