Basic Information

  • Fall Damage is the damage sustained when a player falls from above a certain height, with higher falls causing greater damage. Fall damage behaves the same way as in the previous Souls games. It will remove a percentage of the player's max HP, meaning any survivable fall is always survivable regardless of how leveled up your character's Vitality is, provided that the player's health isn't already reduced enough to cause death. For example, a fall that removes 500 HP for a player with 1000 max HP would only remove 200 HP for a player with 400 max HP.
  • Defenses and stats do not reduce fall damage. Also plunging attacks do not affect fall damage.

Hidden "Equip Load" & Fall Damage

  • Despite hidden "Equip Load" being removed for stamina regeneration with patch 1.04. It does affect the fall damage. Equip Load gets higher by equipping pieces of attire, right and left hand weapons, furthermore in case of the weapons even unequipped ones in your quick menu count. Higher the hidden "Equip Load" the more damage will your character take from the fall damage. Equipped Quick Items do not count toward the equip load. Equipped Hand Lantern does not affect fall damage.
  • In-depth testing shows there are no tresholds in "equip load" which would interfere with fall damage calculation. Each piece of attire and equipped weapons have weight and they stack additively.

Notes

  • Testing took place with ladder jump right before bridge to Father Gascoigne in Central Yharnam, performing jumps from the same height with 1500 of total HP. For base damage value, first jumping with nothing equipped, base damage = 1046 DMG. DMG column is exact number of the fall damage (value is noted after the same values repeat three times for each setup). DIFF column is difference in fall damage (fall damage with noted weapon/attire equipped - base damage)

Beast Runes & Fall Damage

  • The Beast rune has a hidden effect that reduces falling damage by a percentage amount equal to the bonus it gives to Beasthood. The Beast +20 rune would reduce falling damage by 20%, while the Beast +100 rune will negate all falling damage. Falls from a fatal distance are still lethal.
  • Beast's Embrace rune does not reduce fall damage.

Kill Boxes

  • There are places within the area where a character will instantly die when touching them, regardless of the distance of the fall. They are typically found in pitfalls and out-of-bounds areas, and guarantee death regardless of Fall Damage mechanics.

Surviving Lethal Falls

  • Due to the way Bloodborne (and the other souls games really) calculates fall damage on sloped surfaces, it is possible to survive by reloading your character or jumping to a specific location after the fall. Resetting your character with a reload will always remove any and all fall damage from a character in the souls games, even if the damage is still "pending" as the game waits for the character to hit the ground.
