Chalice

In-Game Description

Root Chalice that breaks multiple labyrinth seals.

Root Chalices, used in rituals to break labyrinth seals, are
said to change the labyrinth's form each time.

There are trace remains of medical procedures in parts of
ailing Loran. Whether these were attempts to control the
scourge of the beast, or the cause of the outbreak, is
    unknown.

Overview

  • Use Ailing Loran Root Chalice at a Ritual Altar in Hunter's Dream to create the Chalice Dungeon. Conducting a ritual to create a Chalice Dungeon is fairly straightforward; when you've got a Chalice and the required ritual materials, approach a Ritual altar and select the Chalice Ritual option. In the Chalice Ritual menu you'll see the list of all your collected chalices in the large window on the left of your screen. Along the top of this window are four tabs, one for each class of Chalice, which affects the area that labyrinth will be set in. The central window shows the details of the ritual, including the Depth of the created dungeon, which is essentially the difficulty level, with 1 being the lowest and 5 being the maximum.
  • The depth affects the required level for certain Basic and Rite Materials. For example, Depth 2 labyrinths will require Ritual Blood (2) and Tomb Mold (2), which can be acquired from the corresponding depth labyrinths or from certain chests and enemies from the previous Depth. The cost in Blood Echoes is also shown, along with the required materials, both for the ritual and any possible Additional Rites. If you have all of the required materials and are certain you want to use them, select the Conduct Ritual option to create the dungeon.
  • Additional Rites: When using a Root Chalice to create randomly generated dungeons you'll usually have the possibility to conduct Additional Rites, at the cost of more materials. These rites add effects that can drastically change the conditions within each dungeon, usually making them much more challenging. They do carry some reward, however, usually in the form of increased item drops and Blood Echoes. There are four possible Additional Rites: Fetid Offering, Rotted Offering, Curse & Sinister Bell.

  • Watchdog of the Old Lords
  • The Root Chalices create randomly generated Root Dungeons. You can acquire these Chalices by clearing layers in the Preset Dungeons. They require more materials than the Preset Chalices, and some of them have the possibility of adding Additional Rites. Depth 5 Root dungeons contain some the game's most valuable rewards in their treasure rooms, including Lost and Uncanny weapons, Blood Rocks, high level Caryll Runes and the highest ranking Blood Gems, along with plenty of ritual materials. When a root dungeon is generated, the game will pull from a large list of dungeon layouts for that particular chalice and select one. When compared to one another, each root variant will have a unique arrangement of rooms and differing placements of items, enemies, and bosses.
  • Cursed and Defiled Root Chalice has additional rites: Fetid Offering & Rotted Offering. Enemies are strengthened when Fetid Offering rite is used. They will have their stats boosted and appear with a smoky red visual effect to signify their upgrade. This makes the dungeon harder, but rewards you with more Blood Echoes. It also increases the amount of items that will drop from defeated enemies, making it very much worth the effort to kill those powered-up enemies.
  • Rotted Offering rite triggers one of, or a combination of, the following difficulty-increasing effects: The Eye Collector appears and summons Mad Ones. Tomb Prospector Hunters often appear as enemies. The Labyrinth Ritekeeper appears. It will patrol large rooms, gather other enemies around it and then strengthen them. Even when the Ritekeeper is killed, the enemies will retain their powered-up status. This rite also increases the chance of getting very powerful Blood Gem effects, but this comes at the cost of strong negative effects.

Availability

  • Dropped by (Preset Chalice Dungeon): Blood-starved Beast in Ailing Loran Layer Two.

Notes

  • There are three Random Effects: Special Enemy/Shop, 4th Layer and Poison, that can be applied every time you perform a ritual, regardless of whether you use any Additional Rites. These are all independent of each other, so it's possible to have all of them appear in a single dungeon.
  • In game version 1.0, you cannot conduct rituals for the Root Chalices offline. [image]
